Ugh, I should have predicted there would be the weirdly offended takes coming into this thread (just like in inverted Y threads). It's not hurting you how other people need or choose to play their games!
They're definitely an eye sore for me. I always end up just reading all of them. Fair enough if you can not do that!Just cos I have subtitles on doesn't mean my eyes are fixated on the bottom part of the screen. I just like having them there in case I'm like "what did they say?" and it only requires a quick glance down
This. First thing I do is turn them off. I find them horribly distracting. Games should definitely have them though but I don't use them, generally.Crazy. I like the immersion of being able to move my eyes around the screen and not having to stare at the words at the bottom of the screen the whole time. I only use subtitles for games that aren't in English.
Always off. I don't like knowing what characters are going to say before they say it. It's really distracting.
What this says to me is that there are a lot of non-native English speakers who are gamers.3 major reasons for this
Essential for streaming
Sometimes sound mixing is bad and important dialogue is lost (TLOU) or enemy cues are lost
You're hard of hearing
Genuinely curious, do you all also turn on subtitles for movies, etc? I have friends that do this (who can hear just fine), and it's maddening. What's wrong with just listening to dialog? I absolutely hate reading ahead of the characters and I generally can't help myself.
If you are in a loud gunfight and an NPC is trying talk to you at the same time, it helps being able to glance down a second to clarify what they were trying to say.
