Uber is reportedly looking into offering loans directly to drivers, according to a report from Recode. The ride sharing company recently sent out an in-app survey to some drivers that indicated the company is starting to build a "new financial product" designed to help Uber drivers "in a time of need." The survey contained a number of questions regarding the driver's previous use and future interest in loans.

The survey reportedly asked drivers if they have taken out any small loans of $1,000 or less in the last three years. It also asked "If Uber provided loans, what amount are you most likely to request?" The question offered drivers answers including "Less than $100," "Between $100 and $250," "Between $250 and $500" and "More than $500." It's not clear when or if the loan service will be available to drivers. Uber has not publicly commented on the survey.

Yeah nothing can go wrong with owing money to your "employer"

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

This is basically 21st century sharecropping and should be outlawed outright.

But state legislatures can't even kick payday loans to the curb so...

This isn't a uniquely Uber thing. I've seen this popping up at many companies including my own. I don't know why you guys are acting like it's Uber being uniquely evil.

I'm just curious who would take them up on it.

Most of the Uber drivers I know in my area either already make enough off of it to live comfortable or are using it for extra cash on the side while working their main job.

I feel like this would only be used by Uber drivers in high-cost cities.

the HELP Menu.

Seems to be the hot new thing.

Fuck, noooooooooooo, this is so bad!

I bet this shit is because a ton of companies can see the writing on the wall, due to current bullshit reducing economic certainty, and they want to get in on doing loans as early as possible so they can own their workforce when the recession really hits.

This shit is disgusting on a completely rediculous level, and it saddens me that in the face of adversity, so many rich and powerful people are adopting bullshit that went out of style half to a full century ago.

I weep for the poor people who are gonna be coerced into getting Uber loans to keep their place of residence, only to be now stuck in a dead end low paying garbage ferry for the rest of their natural lives. Because that's the end-goal Uber's shooting for, if they can keep their workforce both low payed and consistently on duty, without the possibility of secondary jobs.

They've already been doing this with their car lease program right?

In that, the loan is repaid first from any money a driver makes. I am guessing they will do something similar here.

I saw the Patreon scam a few days ago and now Uber is getting in on it as well. Seems like the Gig Economy is going to be Gig-Loanshark Economy.

Pay employees less than a living wage. Offer them loans with high interest to pay rent. Profit?

What will they call company scrip when they bring it back?

Loyalty dollars?

Alternative wages?

Morale money?

It's not a bad idea to help out drivers who have sudden and unexpected car repair expenditures that could otherwise completely ruin their earning potential. Consider that no bank is going to loan them money for repairs, and putting it on a credit card will probably come with some insane APR.

But at the same time any loan needs to be completely interest-free with generous repayment terms. And they probably shouldn't exceed more than a couple thousand dollars.

Facebook, google, and amazon are all looking to build miniature cities where they run everything you interact with including the local police.

Uber are gonna get in to payday loans.

The future is looking a little bit less like the awesome sci-fi we dreamed of and more like a fucked up version of our past but without the means for any kind of meaningful pushback because technology now allows a select few to control a great many with ease.

Because interest on loans is the easiest money throughout history. This is gross.

Can you post the quote that demonstrates your point? I see nothing here but some stuff about another company.
For drivers who take up the Advance Pay program, the math during the period of time they are splitting revenue with Clearbanc isn't favorable. Uber takes a 20 percent cut of each fare to start—and has tested going as high as 25 to 30 percent in some markets already. Between 30 to 50 percent of the remaining revenue is taken by Clearbanc until the $1,000 advance is covered. That leaves drivers with as low as 30 percent of the cost of each trip left in their pocket before accounting for their own expenses incurred.

The equation becomes even more challenging when attempting to account for Uber's recent practices that have made fares more affordable for riders and profits much smaller for drivers.

Uber has slashed fares by as much as 45 percent in many major markets, including cities like Detroit, which falls under the new Advance Pay program. Rates for UberX drivers in Detroit have been cut three times already in 2016 according to UberEstimate.com, and fell as low as $0.30 per mile for fares. While these rates fluctuate and have increased, a driver attempting to pay back an advance can have the repayment plan upended by an unexpected rate cut.

Inflexible payment schedule for the driver.

Unpredictable payouts from Uber.

There's all downside for the driver, who may up having to take from their day job's paycheck just to cover their Uber loans. It's garbage piled onto the already bad deal that is being an Uber driver.

I make great money driving for Uber. If these loans were low interest, and not loan shark rates, I don't see the problem. Some of the companies I worked for in the past would pay people's salaries up front if they needed it on a one-off basis.
