The Ultimate Fighting Championship plans to hold a pay-per-view event on tribal land in Central California this month, an attempted end run around widespread federal and state guidelines against holding large gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic, according to three people familiar with the decision.

"This place where this fight is going to be on April 18 I have locked up for two months, so I'm going to continue to pump fights out," White told ESPN on Monday, though he declined to say exactly where.

The location will be the Tachi Palace Casino Resort near Lemoore, Calif., about 40 miles south of Fresno, according to the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because White had not announced the venue. The casino, which closed the night of March 20 because of the pandemic, is on land belonging to the Tachi-Yokut Tribe, part of the federally recognized Santa Rosa Indian Community.

A representative of the Tachi Palace Casino Resort could not immediately be reached for comment, and the U.F.C. did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The location was first reported by Jeff Sherwood, an independent M.M.A. reporter.

The Association of Ringside Physicians, which represents safety personnel in combat sports, has urged the suspension of all combat sports.

"Any combat sport taking place during this global pandemic places the athletes, officials, and anyone else involved in the event under unnecessary risk of infection and transmission of Covid-19," the association said in a statement. "In addition, combat sports athletes often require medical attention after a bout, and we do not wish to see any additional strain on an already overwhelmed medical system."

By holding the event on tribal land, the U.F.C. is not subject to California's executive order mandating that people stay at home. The fights on the card also do not need to be sanctioned by the California State Athletic Commission, which normally regulates mixed martial arts events in the state. The commission has canceled all fights through May 31.

ok so basically the Article says that the island is actually the Tachi Palace Casino Resort, 40 miles south of Fresno California.

Because the event will be on tribal land, UFC does not need to subject to California's rules due to the Virus.

Bloodsport as entertainment for--literally--captive masses during a pandemic is such hokey writing it would be left on the floor of any decent YA editor.

Or maybe don't try to find loopholes in public health policy during a pandemic because you're so desperate to make a buck

Ha, who am I kidding

That community got sold out by greed, you think he was going to do things with safety in mind ?

They've (other mma promotions, not the UFC) held fights at that casino in the past so it's not surprising. These casinos answer to the almighty dollar and id imagine they've been losing hundreds of thousands of dollars because of the quarantine.

As stupid as this is, I wasnt up in arms.. but the article pointing out the potential need for these fighters having to go to the hospital pushed me over. Fuck the UFC. With the shortage of ppe and other resources, they shouldn't be wasted on these idiots.

Bringing a deadly disease to a Native American population...nah, that would never happen.

There will be an island, it's just not for a month or two. Next couple cards will be at that indian reservation, which hosts MMA events all the time.

UFC have their own in-house doctors that cover their events.

I was watching a podcast and the argument was the fighters would have a higher chance of getting in accident on the way to the venue
Also they said they are trying to sell this a PPV

I know people want to make money but got damn can we all just chill the fuck out this hasn't even hit its worst. Like it's not even a maybe too early thing. What's next a fight on the beach of a hurricane ? Yikes

Now that I think about it, UFC does have their own doctors, but for more severe injuries fighters are sent to the hospital, so it's possible they could take up medical resources.

That shit should be sold as the most metal shit ever but Dana is too carny for me.
Someone will indirectly die because of this, and I hope the press explores the Trump connection.

Oh man, this went from fun meme stuff to sad shit. Trouble for me (apart from fighters and staff getting covid) is the fact that you will have 10+ fighters having to go to a hospital post-fight for X-rays, surgeries, MRI or whatever busting into an already terrible situation. The UFC Doctors can stitch you up in the back but you better pray that everyone just gets lightly choked in the first 30seconds in every fight.

This, hasn't white people killed enough Native Americans with disease?

the whole thing is a complete carny shitshow, but the tribal leaders calling the shots on these kinds of deals are businesspeople. It's almost insulting to them to act like they have no agency here and are having this forced upon them.

If you saw first take on ESPN they talked about just that, Dana White is trumps friend and would do anything to help him and that's why trump is the motivation for trying to continue the fights, even while perhaps ignoring the dangers due to the current situation.

Someone should find whatever council is approving this and smack the shit out of them with portraits of Andrew Jackson

Coincidentally I just learned that many of the bigger tribes actually sided with the confederacy during the civil war because they long-associated the federal government of the Union as being bad for them. Can't exactly blame them either.

Dana has no shame... so any criticism will just get him over.

But ESPN... I'm guessing Disney is cool with ESPN doing this, but I wonder if they will succumb to pressure and bail on the idea.

ESPN is desperate for not only live content to cover, but also for bullshit headlines to have their morning show talking heads argue about. This gives them both. Expect Max and Stephen A to have a nuanced discussion on whether or not UFC should be going forward with the card as they remind viewers to order on PPV.

Seminoles don't like to talk about that part of their history

I've been following the batshit developments because I like MMA, and the proposed initial card has a lot, a lot, of very high-profile names attached. Not only that, a lot of UFC fighters are expressing interest on social media in competing. It's fucking shocking, when you contrast it to the NBA, a league with a strong union, where players took it upon themselves to not walk on the court for games once the first player was confirmed to have Covid-19.

I'm just shocked at how irresponsible many fighters are being. It's pretty disgusting, I like to think the best of people, but man... They also really really need to unionize. The NBA and NHL cancelled games on the same day. Unions work.
