They're all shovelware. Porn games are some of the worst made games ever, yet they sell like crazy. Come on pervs, have some standards, demand better!
Eh, some of them have merit beyond just things to jack off to trust me this is my area of (relative) expertise. You have to really dive deep to find the ones that are decent but they exist.

Stop demonizing porn. Masturbation is healthy. Let adults enjoy what they want and mind your own business.

Maybe my experience is different than the author's, but I've seen a wide variety of VN / softcore games on Steam. Sure, most of them cater to a straight audience, but that's just the market at work, right? There appear to be plenty of Yaoi/Yuri/etc. too. Aside from the recent censorship/game banning controversies, nothing I've seen or read suggests that Valve discriminates against any particular sexual preferences, and they provide tools to block viewing of adult content in the Steam store.
Also this people underestimate the variety of tastes these games cater to even though obviously the vast majority of them are catered towards hetrosexual men. If this author wanted to do like a full dive into the "anime sex game" industry even if only on Steam and examine the frequently very harmful and disturbing portrayal of women in many of these games that's one thing but this comes across more is just pointless complaining backed up by like a lack of any meaningful research into the topic.

And? People keep saying this like it's a meaningful commentary on anything when I think people just have an axe to grind against Kotaku
No it's more to do with the article being wrong. The only other online game store that has more LGBTQ games than steam is Itch.io.
It's weird to write an article about how "there are no LGBTQ games on steam" instead of writing one highlighting and giving attention to the ones that exist. This only serves to signal boost the games mentioned.

Just remember:
-AIR
-Fate/Stay Night
-Utawarerumono
All started out as hentais, pretty much.

Still weird that Steam slammed SEVERAL yuri VNs that had as light of content as holding hands/kissing, in the past... It's still weird with where they stand.

Well, I didn't play the others but at least F/SN has only a small fraction of sex content, and it's kind of included with the only reason to sell the game as a sex game. The main experience is about the characters and story, and even if I played the original PC version that has the eroge content, it felt out of place for the kind of game they developed. Obviously the anime adaptations and console ports got rid of the eroge content, so Type Moon was not that focused on it to start with.

"there are no LGBTQ games on steam"

I interpret it more as gaming being more of a hobby still mostly of straight dudes and having a market that reflects that. I certainly think there's no shortage of games focused on LGBTQ narratives on the service both adult and not, but obviously they won't hit the same level of market penetration for that reason. If there's any reason I'd say the article is pretty facile, it would be for that reason. Games of this sort are hardly new.

I've yet to see a game that more specifically caters to the sexual desires of, say, straight women or LGBTQ folks achieving a similar level of success

...

OK. Fair enough. I always wrote that game off as more comedic than anything stimulating, but it's also not my tastes its catering to anyway.
I'd always thought of something like Robert Yang's games as being more in line with the sorts of stuff we're seeing mentioned in this article at least (and it's a perfect example of the content that Steam had big inconsistencies with keeping on its platform), but again I don't feel any particular personal need to dive deep into that subgenre.

Like I can't tell if the article's slant is just "we need more LGBT games" and the author seemingly couldn't be bothered to do the research to find what (admittedly fewer) ones there are, or it's also "we need less anime tiddy games" which would seem like a weird puritan stance to take if it's not just about removing the obviously borderline pedobait stuff.

It's the same with Kanon/Air. Key started out making eroge because sex sells, and when they got more and more successful because of their stories, they went more mainstream and ditched the ero.

Oh its Nathan Grayson who's used his platform at Kotaku to go after Bernie Sanders twice now. Fuck off with your garbage takes.

What.. Kanon was an eroge? I only watched the anime and I can't see how you include sex in the story. Uguu... don't tell me that...

So ... somebody at Kotaku found the monthly top new-releases list and thought that "new release" means bestseller?

There is no clear thesis to this article. Presumably if you just had a problem with the lack of porn games catering more to the lgbtq community you would actually dive into that, see what you could find, go over the numerous inconsistencies with Steams policies, and Valve statements on the matter or even the lack of protection provided to minority communities in the forums and such.

With koikatsu, I am surprise it did so well as a "free" version has been available for years now, with it having more content than the steam version.

lol. I assume you've watched the KyoAni Kanon series from 2006. You should also try watching the anime series from 2002, which is a bit infamous for its weird character designs...

Bingo. Name me another platform that has more LTGBQ+ friendly games than Steam...well besides itch.io cuz sometimes the devs put their games on there first before moving onto other platforms like Steam, etc.

This is a very poor article.

As already mentioned in here, Coming Out on Top and Dream Daddy are two huge titles that spring to mind. They also didn't come out in July and thus you won't see them on Steam's monthly list of new releases.

You'd have to have either done zero research or are willingly choosing to be ignorant when you say that you have "yet to see a game that more specifically caters to the sexual desires of, say, straight women or LGBTQ(...)"

I did. I hope the best for Kyoani btw.

This looks ugly. What does the older version has to offer?

I actually enjoyed it when it came out. Doesn't hold a candle to KyoAni's version of course, but the basic story and characters are there. But it's butt-ugly. I get it's trying to match the amateuristic art from the game, but it went too far.

I couldn't remember in Kanon was too, but by time Clannad came out they already stopped.

Wasn't it also back then that a good number of VNs JUST had ero in it to sell? Like, they only added it in to help sell the game basically? I've never been into ero games, so I'm glad that there's a good number of VNs nowadays that don't need to rely on extra scenes to sell.

Can you imagine if Steins;Gate came out around that time? Super pointless to the plot.

Timing.

Taimanin Asagi appeared on steam a few days ago. Release date to be announced. Weirdly enough it seems to be the 1st game split into 4 parts and part one will be free.
Wait really? That game seems a bit extreme for steam. Surprised that doesn't violate any rules.

Yeah it's called hentai and I do not understand why folk like the stuff. I love anime and the occasional sex depictions is okay, but no hentai yu. Na huh.
