Lots of things to look forward to this month! New shows from Mike White and Steve Conrad; Korean zombie drama Kingdom returns with a special; Jared Harris starring in a new show; an episodic American Horror Story anthology; What We Do in the Shadows spinoff Wellington Paranormal finally makes its way to the US; and something that looks like The Terror season 1 without the supernatural stuff (The North Water). Here's hoping that at least one of them turns out to be good!

~ Recent Highlights ~

Hacks

A dark mentorship forms between Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comic, and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old comedy writer.

Pose

Set in the 1980s and 1990s, Pose is a dance musical that explores the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York: the ball culture world, the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe and the downtown social and literary scene.

Sweet Tooth

On a perilous adventure in a post-apocalyptic world, a boy who's half-human and half deer searches for a new beginning with a gruff protector.

We Are Lady Parts

Geeky biochemical engineering Ph.D. student Amina Hussein becomes the unlikely lead guitarist of Lady Parts, an all-female Muslim punk band on a mission to get a proper gig.

To address the changes in the world around them, the team finds new blood in Harry Wilson, a corporate lawyer who is looking for redemption after realizing he'd been sitting on the wrong side of the table for his entire career, and Breanna Casey, Hardison's foster sister who has a knack for computers, robotics, and getting into trouble.

As victims piled up, two fellow physicians, neurosurgeon Robert Henderson and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby, as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart, set out to stop him. 'Dr. Death' explores the twisted mind of Dr. Duntsch and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenseless among us.

At the heart of the adaptation is the relationship between cousins Linda and Fanny - their friendship will be put to the test as Fanny settles for a steady life and Linda decides to follow her heart, falling first for a stuffy Tory politician, then an ardent Communist, and finally a French duke. As pre-war political divisions split the nation, these women's diverging choices raise intimate, personal and timeless questions about freedom, love, sexual politics, and the mystery of the human heart.

Thanks RatskyWatsky for these threads! I love them! I'm not participating as much as I would like, but I'm always reading them.

---

Anybody here is watching the second season of Betty? I think it's so good! We've reached the halfway point of the season now (3 episodes out of 6) and it's amazing. This third episode was fire!

I think so far the first season was a bit better, but it's still great. I love these characters so much!

It's also very nice to see a show fully include COVID in its world – with the characters wearing masks and all – instead of acting like it doesn't exist. I love it.

Thanks RatskyWatsky I look forward to checking this out in more detail tomorrow.

I think we're likely to take advantage of Game Pass offering a free month of Disney+, to catch up on Wanda, Falcon and Loki in July. I'm currently close to the end of Lupin which has been quite good, though a bit stretching of credibility more than a few times.

Continuing with Bad Batch and Loki on D+, decent but not amazing shows.
On the last 2 episodes of Alice in Borderlands on Netflix, love it so far. 8 episode japanese series with a strong apocalypse/video game vibe (not animated).

Most of the new shows don't really catch my interest, may catch the Resident Evil anime and maybe The Cook of Castamere.

HBO Max just became available in my country, so I'm catching up watching Mare of Easttown and Hacks.

For this month, looking forward to Atypical's last season, one of the few Netflix's Originals that I enjoy. Glad to see is getting a proper ending and not being abruptly cancelled.

Also renewed my Apple TV+ suscription for Ted Lasso.

Resident Evil Infinite Darkness - This will be pure bunk, but I like RE CG.
The Beast Must Die - I'm not sure how this works as a miniseries vs a movie, but it looks interesting.
Maybe The North Water.

Gotta say the first couple of episodes didn't grab me like season one did but this last one was top notch. Seeing the kids come together to was great and the ending montage pulled together all of the story lines really well.

Heck yeah I'm watching Betty. I've talked about it in these threads and elsewhere many times. This season feels particularly hampered by COVID. Limited cast, limited locations (we've been in that warehouse for an awfully long time on a show with such a low episode count). NYC was as much a character as the girls in Season 1, so the limitation is particularly evident. That said, it's still always a great time.

Surprisingly light month for me and this anime season isn't looking much better. Maybe I'll actually have time to catch up on some old stuff I missed?! Thank you RatskyWatsky !

Thursday, 8
(Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness - Netflix)
Meh. It's only 4 episodes, maybe if I finish everything else.

Sunday, 11
Wellington Paranormal - The CW - 9/8c
FINALLY! Hope the CW doesn't butcher it.

The White Lotus - HBO - 9/8c
Can't say the trailers have done much for me, but I'll give it a go.

Monday, 12
Catch and Kill: The Podcast Tapes - HBO - 9/8c
Still remember the good old days with Aerith at the old place. How far he's come.

The Beast Must Die - AMC - 10/9c
Looks OK. Intrigued. Not sure I like these TV versions of classic movies.

Tuesday, 13
Miracle Workers - TBS - 10:30/9:30c
This looks good. Have enjoyed this show for the most part, and the new setting seems fun.

Thursday, 15
Beastars - Netflix
Enjoyed the previous episodes, ready for more.

(The North Water - AMC+)
Only because Ratsky mentioned the good season of The Terror, but I am definitely not subscribing to another streaming service to watch. When's the linear date?

Dark Side of the 90s - VICE
I added this! Dark Side of the Ring is the best thing Vice has going, but these unaffiliated spin-offs are just marketing (and football as a topic? Zzz). That said, the subject matter could be good here so I'll check a look.

Sunday, 18
Dead Pixels - The CW - 9:30/8:30c
First season was OK and it's a quick watch.

(100 Foot Wave - HBO - 10/9c)
Maybe. Low interest in subeject matter.

Friday, 23
Ted Lasso - Apple TV+
Highlight of the millennium. Save us, Ted.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation - Netflix
Don't have a ton of affection for the subject matter, but will check it out for Kev.

I finished Marvel's MODOK on Hulu. Overall thought it was cool, but not great. Some funny moments, but more amusing to me than anything. I did think the voice cast was strong and the ending to the season did surprise me.

We just started Penguin Town on Netflix. It's adorable. Little penguins take over this small town in South Africa each year, and they just wander around clumsily like they own the place.

Catching up this month on Sweet Tooth (Netflix) and the recent Disney shows Wanda, Falcon and Loki with the Game Pass perk of a free month.

8th: Resident Evil Infinite Darkness (Netflix).
9th: The Cook of Castamer (Netflix) - We like period pieces, may check this when we hear more.
11th: Wellington Paranormal (CW) - Hell yes, huge fan of What We Do In The Shadows.
11th: Animal Kingdom (TNT) - Big fan of this series, though it peaked in the first two seasons.
15th: American Horror Stories (Hulu).
18th: Dead Pixels (CW) - Funny video game based comedy series.
23rd: Kingdom (Netflix) - Hell yes, more Kingdom!
23rd: Masters of the Universe (Netflix) - He-Man! Haha, I watched this as a kid. Those morality bits at the end of each ep, lol.
30th: Outer Banks (Netflix) - First season was dumb summer trash. WTH. In for season two anyway.

May check out White Lotus (HBO) and Beast Must Die (AMC) because those networks usually do good shows.

Tonight is the series finale of Mr. Inbetween. Really curious to see how the show wraps up.
I'm really looking forward to it!
Figured I'd bring the discussion into the current TV thread, but that episode was TENSE. Loved how they ended it, shades of a certain HBO show...

Any of the major TV sites have finale coverage? Interview with Ryan? I did find this which has some insight...
www.smh.com.au

‘It’s a word-of-mouth show’: the cult hit series you’re missing out on

Scott Ryan created Ray Shoesmith, a laconic hitman with a very ordinary domestic life, as a student project in the late ’90s. Now he finally says goodbye.

Finished the final season of Bosch the other day, and have been watching Mr. Inbetween season 3 as well (gonna watch the final episode during the day). Both shows and seasons have been good, but noticeably worse than earlier ones which is somewhat disappointing. Especially for Mr. Inbetween, which I think slowed down too much and became too rote in the mid-episodes.

Today I'll also start watching Babylon Berlin season 3, since it FINALLY premiered here in Sweden. Interestingly enough, here they are showing season 3 as a run of 6 hour-and-a-half episodes instead of 12 episodes, hopefully it works out fine.

I posted in the wrong thread earlier by mistake, lol.

Some thoughts on the series finale.

Weird seeing Ray with some hair, lol. Had to turn on CC to understand what the 2 guys were saying at the end there. Thought they might be people hired to take revenge against or maybe family of the biker he killed, but it seemed like 2 lowlifes you messed w/the wrong guy from his smile at the end. The show really knew how to do intensity/action, along with balancing the lighter moments with his daughter/buddy. Will get some dimmies in honor to celebrate.

The music was incredible too!
I finally just watched the first episode. It was definitely a first episode, setting everything up. Lol. It wasn't bad though. The music was actually really good.

I'm also really stupid: I forgot that since I have Hulu + HBO Max (there was a discount when packaging the two together), I get live HBO too! So, I can actually watch this show as it airs.

Really great Dave tonight. This season has been super ambitious and interesting, if not always successful.

Caught up with Betty ahead of the finale on Friday. Don't always like the relationship drama, but love the skating scenes.

I thought the Betty finale was really well done. It really makes skating with your friends look like one of the coolest things to do. Also in general the show is great at the TV thing where the name of the show appears in different ways. Not sure if there is a name for that, but Umbrella Academy, Legion did it really well also.

It's generally called a title drop (when spoken) or a visual title drop (when depicted).

This season of Betty felt like a real step down for me. It was a lot more slapdash plot-wise (I think their attempt to be more plot-focused kind of backfired) with tons of questionable acting choices. They were clearly limited in what they could do because of the pandemic, and that made NYC feel like much less of a character when compared to season 1. Season 1 was like floating around the city being young and stupid without a care in the world. Season 2 was much heavier (in a bad way; our crew aren't the strongest actors which they got away with in the past given the material) and rarely left the warehouse.

I hope there is a Season 3, and I hope they can get back to season 1 vibes safely. Will always love the show (and movie!).

I get what you're saying. The second season was definitely a big step down. To me, it peaked at episode 3 and then really went downhill after that. Don't get me wrong, I still love this show so much! But this season was very far from what Crystal Moselle and this whole crew could accomplish with season 1 and the Skate Kitchen movie.

And I think you're right, the pandemic definitely affected the show. I still think it was so cool to incorporate COVID into the story so much, but acknowledging it and weaving it into the narrative is obviously not enough to get past all the production challenges that this pandemic brought. Like TheNatureBoy said, it was still very well done, but I think it's obvious they got extremely limited. At least, with the way this last episode ended they'll be able to isolate this season as its own little thing and continue where they left off at the end of season 1. And I really, really hope we get a season 3.

Been watching Physical every week with my wife. It's reasonably entertaining but not amazing. The missus is lukewarm on it for sure. We finished up Loki and really liked that a lot though.

Loving Schmigadoon. Fun show with catchy tunes.
This is where we are at in our household as well. Very enjoyable start.

Thanks for the visual title drop info, love when shows do that.

I didn't think it was that much of a step down from S1, maybe because I wasn't quite as high on S1 as some. Plot has never been the show's strong suit imo, for me it really is the vibes of them hanging out and skating. Covid limited some of the locations I suppose. I would say Indigo had the strongest plot from a dramatic standpoint this season.
