Watched 3 French shows lately. Which is super rare, but I guess my country has delivered a bit lately.

The first one is called En Thérapie (In Therapy).

0moHU85.jpg

It is the French adaptation of BeTipul, an Israeli show about a therapist and his clients, that you follow, week after week. The theme of this adaptation is centered around the 2015 Bataclan mass shooting, and handles it quite skillfully. The show is pretty damn fucking great, it had been a while since I thoroughly enjoyed a French TV Show, and I couldn't help but binge-watch this one in the span of a couple of days. You get to discover, like, dislike, relate to all characters, you get to have an insight into how fellow humans behave and react the way they do, as well as get to discover their most entrenched vulnerabilities, in the most beautiful and sincere ways. In essence, I think the show is just a love letter to human beings, and I enjoyed it that way.

The show is freely available to watch on Arte.tv website, sadly only French & German subtitles are available at the time. Not sure it'll get to be released with English ones, but I sure hope so!

The 2nd French show I watched is one I already enjoyed watching previous seasons of, and it's Dix Pour Cent (Call My Agent!).

This 4th season was still delivering on the quality the first 3 seasons had established, but I found myself a tiny bit tired of the drama tropes at play here, lacking subtlety and nuance. Still, it was fun, entertaining, and bonus point for Camille Cottin still being the GOAT. Either way I'll keep on watching whenever S5 will be released, this show is overall fun and good.

The 3rd and last French show I watched lately is Lupin.

Not that I am a huge fan of the Arsène Lupin mythology, but I was curious about this one, I heard raving critics about it, and also, just for Omar Sy, I thought it was worth giving it a shot. I quite enjoyed it, really. It's not an exceptional show, first season is pretty good overall without being stellar, but honestly, Omar Sy delivers and he's thriving in this role, and that's enough for me to enjoy the show overall.
Can't wait for season 2!

Just watched the season finale of Your Honor. Thought the show was pretty meh overall despite some good performances. Just too many dumb decisions propelling the plot/creating the drama.

I typically don't like to shit on anyone but good god some of the directing decisions were laughably bad in that climactic scene. Apparently Cranston directed the finale. The shot of Jimmy Baxter hugging his son with Cranston looking through the window in the background was a so bad it's good moment. It made for some good comedy when they were clearly going for tension.

I guess I can't say for sure it's a directing issue, the script could be that specific as far as the scenario that played out.

I have one ep left of Your Honor. I wouldn't recommend it. Like you said, some dumb stuff, and his son is an idiot. If we had any sympathy for the son that would probably help, like say if the setup to the series was an accident or the mob kids fault, instead of making it Cranston's sons fault.

30 Coins has been great. Two eps left for me.

Finished the last season of Vikings. Overall will have a lot of fond memories of the series, even if it never hit the highs of earlier years. Still produced some really good battle scenes and had some of the best landscape shots on TV.

Will probably get back into Cowboy Bebop now and use a trial of Peacock to watch the Saved by the Bell reboot.

Yellowstone is the worst show in TV history. Utter irredeemable garbage.

I've watched every episode.

Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet: Episode 5 is one of the best episodes of TV I've seen.

Episode ended with the perfect song too.

Your Honor was meh, and the ending sucked. The last episode seemed rushed compared to the rest of the show. There was a drama piece thrown in for as far as I can tell no reason and it went nowhere
the supposed note left by the juror to the defendant.
It seems like Cranston
may not be punished for all his crimes.
His dumbass kid
only got punished by accident.
And why do none of these people ever answer their phone, and why does the person trying to phone them never then send a message? FFS. Over and over again, they did that "drama".

Your Honor might actually be the dumbest tv series I've ever seen. Felt like the show was written by aliens because no fucking human would've made any of the decisions in that show.
I stopped watching after three episodes, I just came away very surprised Cranston signed up for this. I'd love the hear how it went off the tracks.

Finished Saved by the Bell on Peacock. Overall thought the season was pretty good, 10 episodes makes for quick watch. I liked most of the new characters and all the OG cast still looks really good. When Season 2 comes around, I will definitely check it out.

Ehh Your Honor wasn't that bad. At least, I don't think people were making stupid decisions. I actually think Michael did pretty well at covering up a murder... The biggest issues were Adam being a complete fucking idiot the entire show and that shitty ending. Aside from everything to do with Adam, it's a pretty good show until the final episode.

The ending:
Seriously? All that build up for fucking nothing? Is Michael going to pay? Is Kofi going to get justice? No answers just so we get some stupid "artistic" irony shit.

Warrior S1 and S2 were recently added to HBO Max.
The Knick was just added this week.
Banshee is coming next week.

Another terrible thing about Your Honor was their use of covid. The entire show had zero reference to covid existing except for part of one episode where he talked about having an empty courtroom because of this (and yet people could still walk in randomly, so why wouldn't the press?), and just one person in the jury was wearing a mask. So it wasn't a thing for 90% of the show, and then it was sort of kind of a thing for a few scenes. Make up your mind.

I ran out of TV shows to watch recently, so decided to finally give Sacred Games (Netflix) a shot after a former Indian colleague of mine kept raving about it for a long time. I'm slightly bummed I didn't heed his advice earlier, but also very glad I finally got around to it. Finished up the first season now and damn, that was a great season of TV. Really well-acted and beautifully shot, and the twin narrative was really captivating. Let's see how this stuff continues, since the core narrative really ticks that "what happens next!?" itch.

Finished watching Gangs of London last night.

Series is incredibly violent, but also has some incredible action scenes. I would have liked more hand to hand combat, but the gunplay was really good. One episode in particular has an incredible action set piece that is really creative and better than what I've seen in a lot of movies.

I certainly hope people are watching The Investigation. It's absolutely something special.

Edit: Just finished the episode. The sheer ingenuity and determination on display, and the quiet way the story is being told... I teared up at Jens thanking everyone at the end. I've never seen anything like this, where the dramatization is told with the full participation of both the lead investigator and the parents of the deceased. Choosing never to show the suspect was bold and I wasn't sure it would work in a singularly-focused crime drama but it has become a strength beyond being consistent with actual events.

It sounds so derivative though 😫
I mean, really? I watch A LOT of TV and I've never seen anything quite like it. It's real investigative work lightly dramatized made with the full participation of the lead investigator (he's the main character, played by an actor) and parents of the deceased. Beyond that, many other characters (and dogs!) are played by themselves. The divers are all the real divers, the scientist/professor who helped crack a big part of the case is the real scientist, the dogs are the real dogs (cadaver and family; Kim's parents insisted). It's done with such a brilliant, human touch while at the same time being so singularly focused. I haven't seen many shows like this ignore the suspect because the lead investigator never actually interacted with him. I already knew most details of the story before watching the show and felt it wouldn't be worth the time but I'm very glad I reconsidered. It's a quick watch at 6 episodes, too.

I didn't know about all of that - I guess I just see a show involving murder investigations and think "oh another one" 😑

Oh I hear you, I'm 100% in the same boat there. My SO pretty much watches nothing but "murder porn" and it's the most tedious pap to me. Seen one, seen 'em all. I was really leery going in but it won me over almost immediately, and the companion podcast where you learn how much of it is fact-based (basically all of it!) sealed the deal.

I just watched the first episode from the second season of For All Mankind.

Wow, it was awesome! Can't wait for the rest of the season! (I don't think it should have been a weekly release, though.)

That solar storm!!

Finished Tribes of Europa and was severely disappointed.

It suffers from a whole host of problems, most overly is that I counted only two characters worth a damn, and one of them was a secondary character who is barely a focus on the show and whose storyline dead-ends at the end, so there is very little to latch on to. There are three different plotlines going and all of them amount to the main characters kind of not doing anything until the last episode, so for a third of the show you are watching a dull story focused on Elja and on top of that Elja is just dreadfully boring.

It also does one of my least favorite things that a new show can ever do, namely that it treats its first season like the first chapter of its story instead of an entire first book. Nothing happens, nothing happens, nothing happens, final episode stuff starts to happen and then its over. It is the worst.

And I wish creators would take a look at their format and really think about how they are going to tell their story in it. This thing was only 6 episodes but it tries to jump to something like Season 3 of The 100 right out of the gate and it feels like a mess because of it. We learn almost nothing about any of the various factions in this world(barring the bad guys), there are so many side characters that don't amount to anything, and the worldbuilding is so poorly conveyed that it it starts to feel randomly thrown together.
For instance, Elja's part of the story makes the world feel empty and Wild West-ish, where they can visit a brothel/bar run by a tech-obsessed crime boss and his goons, or they can visit a solitary engineer lady in her private compound in the middle of nowhere, but the rest of the show seems to postulate that there is a looming war for the control of the entire continent, where the badguys control what is left of Berlin and its populated with like 100,000 people. Liv's story is centered on a group that is heavily militarized, they drive around in jeeps and other military vehicles, and have all the gear and regalia, and we are supposed to accept that they'll have trouble with the badguys who ride horses?

edit: Also does the "bad guys are sexy and into fetishwear and anything that isn't the most vanilla of heterosexual acts" bullshit. Ooh, did you see Varvara kiss that girl, she's so bad. And the male sex slaves wear makeup, lord have mercy.

Just finished watching Lupin on Netflix. The 5 episodes for Part 1 make it a quick and pretty entertaining watch. I'll definitely check out Part 2 when it comes this summer. Always fun watching a good heist/scheme. Makes for the 2nd French show I've watched since
Les Revenants back in the day.

Finished One Day at a Time Season 4 - the 6 episodes they were able to film.

A shame they weren't able to finish their season, but the last episode was a really good one to go out on.
Did you get to watch the animated special, too? That's the only one I haven't seen. Absolutely love the show though. Thanks again G_Shumi for recommending it, it's one of my faves.

I didn't get a chance to watch the animated special, it wasn't on YouTube TV as part of the season. Didn't show up on CBS All Access either.

That last line was great timing.
