Happy Holidays everyone! Be sure to watch lots of TV while on break (if you get a break) to catch up on all the stuff you missed - namely, Claws (which I know you still haven't watched)!

~ Recent Highlights ~

How to with John Wilson

Documentary filmmaker John Wilson embarks on an odyssey of self-discovery and cultural observation by covertly filming the lives of fellow New Yorkers while trying to share advice.

The Good Lord Bird

Based on the award-winning novel by author James McBride, "The Good Lord Bird" is told from the perspective of Henry "Little Onion" Shackleford, a newly freed teenager who joins abolitionist John Brown on a holy crusade to end slavery. Onion encounters Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, and he finds himself as a part of the famous 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry. "The Good Lord Bird" is equal parts absurd and tragic as it spotlights the ever-changing racial, religious and gender roles that make up the American identity.

The Queen's Gambit

Set during the Cold War era, orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon struggles with addiction in a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world.

We Are Who We Are

We Are Who We Are focuses on two American kids who live on a fictional U.S. military base in Chioggia, Italy in 2016. The series explores friendship, first love, identity, and immerses the audience in all the messy exhilaration and anguish of being a teenager – a story which could happen anywhere in the world, but in this case, happens in this little slice of America in Italy.

Definitely:
  • High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: The Holiday Special - Obviously.
  • Pennyworth - the first season was surprisingly good, pacing issues aside, so I am definitely still in.
  • Shadow Lines - the trailer for it makes it look quite good.
  • Tiny Pretty Things - I love, love, love the whole 'art is so all encompassing it turns people into monsters' genre
  • The Expanse

Maybe:
  • The Wilds - if word of mouth is good.
  • The Stand
  • Bridgerton - if word of mouth is good.
  • Equinox - looks interesting.

Thanks Ratsky.

Big sci-fi month. This is the last day to get the free month offer for CBS All Access so we're going to do that for Star Trek Discovery S3, and pay for January to finish it. Don't know how long The Stand is, but maybe we'll catch that too. Also, The Expanse, and Mandalorian S2 over Xmas.

Of the other shows, Your Honor for Bryan Cranston and will look into El Cid and Hardy Boys. I still have all 6 eps of Undoing and all 3 of Black Narcissus to start soon.

Mostly a month to catch up on shows for me.

I know this is TV in December, but it is a really good month for movies coming to streaming services.

Soul, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, WW1984, and Sound of Metal.

I'm all in the Flight Attendant and can't wait for the remaining episodes' to drop. For the shows in December, more Expanse, Bridgerton, and Your Honor have me the most excited. If the reviews for El Cid are solid, that should also be worth a watch. Fascinating character and time in history.

Finished The Queen's Gambit last night and overall really enjoyed it. Anya Taylor Joy mostly carries it, but the supporting cast around her is solid. The child actor who plays her was great casting as well, reminded me of Dark and how well they cast the younger counterpart.

C/S on everyone saying the cinematography/production design was on point. Beth's overall look and her red hair immediately make her stand out, in addition to mostly being surrounded by men in a world of chess.

One to add to the OP.

Vikings final half-season is coming Dec 30th to Amazon Prime. What a trailer. Yeah, the show peaked in S1 and S2, but it's still been a great run.

I doubt I'll get to all of these in December, but here goes.

Detention looks interesting.
Maybe Alice in Borderland if reviews are good.
Your Honor because I'm always up for anything with Cranston.
The Wilds
Equinox
The Stand
won't be for awhile because I watched the original on Blu-ray this summer.

I'm watching Jessica Jones S2 and The Exorcist S2 right now. Both are pretty enjoyable so far.

Meh. Only for Carl Winslow.

HECK YEAH.

Some other notable stuff this month, and I'm sure I'm missing / forgetting a ton...
Final season of Attack on Titan on December 7th (Crunchyroll, etc)

Sound of Metal on Prime Video, Mank on Netflix on December 4th.
Wolfwalkers on Apple TV+ on December 11th.
WW84 on HBO Max, Soul on Disney+ on Christmas.

Has anyone else seen Alice in Borderland? Great adaptation of the manga that makes minor story arc changes for the sake of better TV. They leave the story off in a great spot for a second and final season. Fun eight episode watch.

Finished Blood of Zeus on Netflix, thought it was entertaining enough but not on the level of say Castlevania and I enjoyed Seis Manos more from the same studio. A lot of the story elements will be familiar if you know Greek mythology. Animation wasn't as fluid as I like, but the music was on point and it has some fun moments.

Pennyworth had a solid opener.

Lots of set up obviously, what with the new status quo and all that, but it was just great to be back in this crazy alt-history spy story with these characters. Martha in particular was her wonderful self("We made out. I had my hand on your cock for 5 seconds and then you were shot. That's not a relationship, that's a funny story.") and I'm always happy when Bet Sykes is on my screen.

And I'm super glad that it looks like they'll be doing something with Bet's whole 'is on the side of the people who want to kill "sexual deviants" when she herself is a queer woman' thing. I was really confused when the first season never even touch on it.

I started Alice in Borderland. Early on in the first ep Arisu was playing some mobile game which had a cube on screen and he was manipulating it and getting combos etc. Was that a real game, and if so what was it?

Finally got around to watching Homecoming Season 2. With only 7 episodes, most of them being around 30 mins it goes by pretty fast. It lacked some of the mystery and intensity of Season 1, although they do some clever things in the beginning. I did enjoy the ending as well.

Finished Lucifer Season 3 on Netflix. 26 episodes is the longest season I've watched in a minute, but it was good to see Tom Welling in a major role again since Smallville ended.
