Looks like a pretty decent month for both new and returning shows. For the new stuff, we've got an animated thing from Marvel; Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a new show on Apple TV+; there's a Rosa Salazar horror thriller on Netflix; the Stephen Amell wresting show on Starz (👀); Nicole Kidman is like a creepy therapist or something on Nine Perfect Strangers for Hulu; Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez have a comedy for Hulu; and Indigenous people get some much needed representation with Reservation Dogs on FX!

On the returning side, there's the final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine; Awkwafina is Nora from Queens and Work in Progress are back for their sophomore seasons; Jason Momoa's See is back too, this time with the showrunner of Banshee and Warrior on board (!); and veterans American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, and Archer are back for seasons 10, 11, and 12 respectively!

~ Recent Highlights ~

Mr. Inbetween

"Mr Inbetween" is a half-hour comedy series inspired by the cult film "The Magician" and centers around Ray Shoesmith. Juggling a relationship, parental responsibilities, friendships and a sick brother while earning a living would be difficult for anyone, but it's particularly difficult for Ray since he's a criminal for hire. Ray "takes care of people" -- collecting debts, relieving them of drugs and guns, and often taking care of them on a more permanent basis. Ray demands respect and does not tolerate it when someone disregards his very clear code of ethics.

Run the World

A group of women work, live and play in Harlem as they strive for world domination.

Johnson - Bounce TV (Aug 1)

Centering on four life-long best friends in Atlanta, all of whom share the same last name (Johnson), the series revolves around what happens when the four guys find themselves in vastly different places in their lives and it begins to threaten their bond.

Small Town News: KPVM Pahrump - HBO (Aug 2)

A six-part half-hour documentary series that pulls back the curtain on life at a privately owned TV station in the small desert town of Pahrump, Nevada, revealing a colorful cast of characters in front of and behind the cameras. The series provides an entertaining glimpse into a scrappy, hardworking local news broadcaster looking to expand into a bigger market during challenging times. With warmth and humor, the series celebrates the can-do spirit, community pride and political diversity among the station's charismatic and often humorous employees.

Buffering - ITV2 (Aug 5)

OBVSexv.png

Buffering follows Iain, a children's TV presenter with an aversion to kids and in an up and down relationship (mainly down) with TV producer Olivia. Iain's housemates Rosie, Greg, Ashley, and Thalia alongside Ashley's old flame Robbie, are all navigating that age where they're too old for nightclubs but too poor for mortgages. Part of a generation who are told they must live the perfect life, these friends discover it's not only ok but healthy to fail, over and over again.

Hit & Run - Netflix (Aug 6)

In this new action thriller, the life of a happily married man is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a mysterious hit and run accident in Tel Aviv. Grief-stricken and confused, he searches for his wife's killers. With the help of an ex-lover, he uncovers disturbing truths about his beloved wife and the secrets she kept from him.

Mr. Corman - Apple TV+ (Aug 6)

'Mr. Corman' follows the days and nights of Josh Corman, an artist at heart but not by trade. Things haven't been going his way lately – his lifelong dream of a career in music didn't pan out and he finds himself teaching fifth grade at a school in the San Fernando Valley, his ex-fiancé Megan has moved out and his high school buddy has moved in. Aware that he still has a lot to be thankful for, Josh struggles nevertheless through universal feelings of anxiety, loneliness and self-doubt. Darkly funny, oddly beautiful and deeply heartfelt, this relatable comedy-drama speaks for our contemporary generation of 30-somethings – rich with good intentions, poor with student loans and working to become grown-ups sometime before they're senior citizens.

Navarasa - Netflix (Aug 6)

From amusement to awe, the nine human emotions of Indian aesthetic theory are explored in this anthology series.

S.O.Z. Soldiers or Zombies - Amazon Prime (Aug 6)

While on the other side of the border, a United States Army experiment with pigs in a military base, goes wrong and the Mexican police unit going after Marroquín gets infected, transforming into a new breed of zombies with special abilities. A modern drama series, 'Fantasy Island' takes place at a luxury resort, where literally any fantasy requested by guests is fulfilled, although they rarely turn out as expected. The resort is run by Elena Roarke, who set aside her own ambitions — and even the love of her life — to uphold her family's legacy. Sophisticated, insightful and always charming, Elena's calm exterior masks the challenges of the responsibilities she has assumed as steward of this mysterious island.

The Hunt for a Killer - Sundance Now (Aug 12)

A crime drama based on the true story of detectives Pelle Åkesson and Monica Olhed and their hunt for the killer of 10-year-old Helén Nilsson, a case that shook Sweden to its core.

'The Hunt for a Killer' is a story about a region left behind, class inequalities and social exclusion, but it's also a story about a man of integrity who pushed back against the authorities, revolted against corruption and never gave up.

The Ms. Pat Show - BET+ (Aug 12)

Based on Ms. Pat's stand-up comedy and memoir, 'The Ms. Pat Show' is the story of a former convicted felon turned suburban mom and stand-up comedian, whose hustle and resilient spirit were forged on the streets of Atlanta. To much reserve, she now finds herself in conservative middle America alongside her penny-pinching husband played by J. Finished Masters of the Universe: Revelation since it was only 5 episodes. Will tune in for part 2 whenever it drops, but as far as animated series it's not on the level of Castlevania or Seis Manos for me, which is understandable because this is definitely more geared towards kids while those 2 skewed more adult.

I doubt it. It's been forever since S1 aired and no official word from Netflix. Blood of Zeus from the same studio premiered after Seis Manos and already got a S2 renewal. Unfortunately it didn't seem to get much traction.

Hi RatskyWatsky, where did you see All Creatures Great and Small is coming this month? I can't seem to find it online.

Oop, looks like it's a special titled 'Between the Pages', which is described thusly:

Get to know the cast and creators of the hit series based on James Herriot's beloved books. Savor the best moments from the first season, including Dame Diana Rigg in her final role as Mrs. Pumphrey, and look ahead to what might happen in Season 2.

Sorry for the false alarm!

I'm watching Andromeda at the moment. I just reached the halfway in season 2 and apparently it's all downhill from here as that's when Kevin Sorbo pushed the showrunner out and demanded more focus on his character.

‘Brand New Cherry Flavor’ Review: Revenge Gets Horrifying in a Sensational Netflix Fever Dream

An undeniable all-out performance from Rosa Salazar centers this hazy L.A. nightmare that’s by turns hypnotic, sensational, and punishing.

Brand New Cherry Flavor brings Lynch-meets-Cronenberg weirdness

While it’s certainly not of the caliber of a David Lynch movie, Brand New Cherry Flavor operates with a similar sensibility of intentional distancing, meaning it isn’t for everyone.

Nine Perfect Strangers Review: Hulu’s Spa Retreat Is a Campy, Confused Mess

Review: Despite a great cast and some fun elements, Hulu's 'Nine Prefect Strangers' is a messy mix of comedy, drama, horror and camp.

Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy in Hulu’s ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’: TV Review

Set at a wellness resort, David E. Kelley's latest Liane Moriarty adaptation boasts a star-studded cast also including Regina Hall, Michael Shannon, Samara Weaving, Luke Evans and Manny Jacinto.

Eep, sounds like a skip to me!

This, on the other hand, sounds very promising!

Watched the 2 episodes of Reservation Dogs that dropped, solid so far. Show has a mellow, low-key charm to it.

I watched the 1st episode of S2 and have been letting them build up on my DVR. Might have to dip back in soon.

Did you have a chance to catch up with Motherland Fort Salem yet? Yesterday's episode was also great. Not as strong as the one from last week I think, but still great. Maybe I should have, but I really didn't see that twist coming at all.

I really love this show. It doesn't have the same budget as other high-profile series, and sometimes it shows, but the writing is always so strong. Eliot Laurence does such a fantastic job.

And fun fact, I just learned that the scar on the chin and jaw of the actress playing Raelle – Taylor Hickson – is actually real. I thought it was something they added for the character. Taylor got that scar because of a very unfortunate accident on the production of the movie Incident in a Ghostland in 2016, not long after she turned 19. She sued the production in 2018 because of that. That's such a crazy and unfortunate accident...

Not yet, might try to get caught up this weekend.

I did watch the 1st ep of Fantasy Island last night on Fox, it was okay. There was a neat twist I didn't expect to see. Feels like if it were a cable/streaming show it could be a bit more wild, but the format works well with different guest stars popping up each week. Really have no memory of the original show.
