The source piece is related to the NYT's Pulitzer winning coverage of the Trump family estate, and how Fred Trump Sr. used fake corporations to shift generational wealth from him down to his children via corporations that they had shared stakes in, that they'd take a bth with bad financials to avoid the estate tax (e.g., Fred Trump-owned building would suddenly start buying all of their furnishings from some newly opened company in New York that would sell them furnishings at 3x the price it should be, with the stakeholders of that company then pocketing the profit; the main company would then write off the expenditures as losses). He did this with nearly 300 small corporations to get his vast estate into his childrens' hands paying far fewer taxes than they would have otherwise. Trump long tells the story that his father started him with $1million to get his start, and Trump turned that into billions. But, realistically, Fred Trump Sr. gave him $400million and Donald Trump basically turned that into no more than $400million, far less than he would have made if he had -- say -- invested that $400m into government bonds.
