Most Presidents would try to stop the United States from barreling toward disaster. But Donald Trump has nothing to say and no answers to mitigate a calamity unfolding on his watch that he seems resolved to ignore.

On the day when the government's top infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci said he would not be surprised to see the US record 100,000 new coronavirus cases per day, Trump refused to break his deafening silence.

And the day after his White House described record-breaking new infections that are sweeping the nation as "embers that need to be put out," Trump's campaign claimed credit for the "phenomenal" success of his botched pandemic leadership.

Trump is now pretty much the sole figure in authority in either party -- including his major Republican allies -- who refuse to wear or endorse face masks that are proven to slow the spread of coronavirus but that he has stigmatized as a liberal plot to harm him politically.

But Trump on Tuesday tweeted cryptically "THE LONE WARRIOR!" -- apparently embracing his isolation from even political allies and the scientific approaches that have proven elsewhere to at least slow the spread of the coronavirus in the short term.

Undeterred by the deepening national crisis, Trump is pressing ahead with plans for an early July Fourth celebration at Mount Rushmore that will bracket him symbolically and without irony alongside four of America's most revered Presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The social distancing advised by Trump's government will not be enforced.

Trump refuses to lead as pandemic worsens and allies desert him on masks

Most Presidents would try to stop the United States from barreling toward disaster. But Donald Trump has nothing to say and no answers to mitigate a calamity unfolding on his watch that he seems resolved to ignore.

So not only is he refusing to endorse the wearing of masks, but he is going forward with his plans for a massive 4th of July celebration that will not require masks or social distancing. A celebration that will likely attract morons from across the country. And those morons will then travel back home and spread COVID to their family, friends, and coworkers.

Awesome.

That "lone warrior" tweet in all caps was something else. Seemed like the cry of a madman. His failure to lead has been horrible for the nation and stopping the spread of the disease. The one good thing is that every day he does nothing, it hurts his election chances more and more.

He really is a traitor working to destroy America. Probably not aware of it though, he's such an imbecile.

He should be dragged to prison... AT BEST

Gotta love the low-energy snowflaking going on. Total narcissistic meltdown.

He should be dragged to prison... AT BEST

He probably should've been sent to prison years ago for fraud.

GOP finally sees the writing on the wall and are fleeing the sinking Trump ship like rats.

I sincerely hope he serves as an albatross around the GOP for a generation of election cycles. Every single member of congress and the GOP leadership are complicit in this.

He just doesn't see corona as a big deal anymore. "Some will die, 99% will live through it".

Scores of people feel that way. And they shake and squirm to show the death rates, how we have better medicine to prevent deaths today, how the numbers are inflated and so on and on.

This pandemic really is showing up all these 'strongman' leaders as the absolute idiots that they are.

For him it's a game with the press. He doesn't want to give them 'the pleasure' of seeing him in a mask (his words!).

Nobody has time for this.

I think in many ways it's just showing what we knew all along. He didn't want to become President to lead, he wanted it for all the adulation he'd get from it. He hid when the protests started, he's hiding now that COVID-19 is spiking, he's hiding with the news about him being aware about Russia putting bounties on our troops etc. This all has to be pretty miserable for him. Not because of all the bad shit happening, but because of how little he can go out and do rallies, which is what he seems to love the most.

Yup, since economy will stay in the tank too.

Yeah, and now that it's sweeping into red/purple states like Texas, Arizona, and Florida, it's hurting his chances there while killing the narrative he tried early on that this is a blue state disease. There's not much he can say when Florida has up to 10k cases a day, so he just wants to talk about statues.

This Tweet can apply to so many terrible situations:
  1. COVID-19
  2. Race relations and reconciliation
  3. Russia-bounty scandal
Good news is that his campaign isn't going to change their song as the election rolls along. Let's just hope the country is in a decent-enough shape for Biden to actually govern come 2021.

This will kill thousands, but on the bright side a lot of them will be obese conservatives.

This and the upcoming Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (which, lets face it, even if it was cancelled, people would show up anyways) are going to turn western South Dakota into a huge ass shit-show in regards to the virus (cases in Rapid City have been rising since the city opened back up).

I hate living in this state, but I can't afford to move anywhere else.

And now Northeast blue states like New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts now have coronavirus under control thanks to masks and social distancing enforcement.

I can't make up my mind on this. Clearly he should start wearing a mask because this is a public health issue. BUT I don't think even him wearing a mask will convince his crazies. So the best outcome then is for him to keep being against it and let his popularity continue to sag!

Yup, and the governor was all "we will not be enforcing any social distancing or mask wearing. We will give out masks but no one has to wear it."

South Dakota was a rare state that could get away with doing nothing for the virus and not shutting down because of its low population density, though they did have outbreaks in their meat plants. But I bet they will see a spike after the fourth of July celebration. Hopefully, barely anyone shows up like Tulsa.

Anyone else think there will be a large amount of people suing the president once he's out of office, specifically because of how he handled Covid-19? He's literally killing people with his stupidity.

I kind of agree, but it doesn't feel good to say so. Nobody wants to see others suffer, and Trump refusing to wear a mask is causing suffering. On the other hand, if this helps lead to him losing in November, that will reduce suffering as well.

I'm torn as well, but for different reasons.

On the one hand by wearing a mask he will possibly convince some people to finally wear them. On the other hand would be protected from getting it himself. Which sucks.

(I'm kidding.)

Meanwhile on Twitter, he's trying to start a new conspiracy that Biden got the questions before some interview and it's like THERES A FUCKING PANDEMIC IDIOT! Literally NO ONE GIVES A SHIT.

It's kind of funny watching how much he's flailing with Biden. He's even stopped using the "Sleepy Joe" nickname of his because he couldn't get it to stick. He's got to be really frustrated with this situation.

I feel like his 2020 strategy is just to get a higher percentage of paranoid white supremacists to vote.

The man has not lead on a single issue. All he has ever been interested in was to sow discord and divide while pandering to his base.
