It's something to keep an eye on. Trump has been protecting his tax returns more than anything else and this is the first time his tax returns could be turned over without the possibility of the DOJ getting involved.

when is the deadline to have these released?

Mazar said they'll release them at 4pm on the day that they're ordered to release them.

Surely he won't be able to wiggle his way out of this one right? Right?!

😞
The problem with that framing is that it implies that these are all unconnected episodes and one thing hasn't lead to another. That everything he "slipped out of" before isn't culminating in all the things he's going into now.

It's like people who say that the Mueller investigation was "pointless" because Trump isn't in prison, despite SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE associated with it now serving prison time and millions of dollars recouped from the investigation.

Everyone likes to think it's a zero sum game. The president is under an official impeachment inquiry right now. That's neither the beginning, middle, or end of this sordid saga.

I would have legit contacted a hacker friend and found a way to leak these anonymously. Have some patriotism, accountants.

Hope this works, though.

His constant obfuscation and the intense desire to expose it only gets more baffling as time goes on. What could possibly be so damning in his tax returns other than possibly showing he's not as rich as he makes himself out to be and he he's a terrible at managing his business? That's not a secret or at least I don't see how his tax returns will move the needle for anyone.

There are too many NY politicians who will pursue him to the end to mage their careers for this to end after hes out of office.

Vance is one. He wants to run for NYAG and/or Governor and this is a hell of a resume builder.

I don't mean to imply the results of opportunism here are a bad thing.

He's also doing it because he's under the gun for his previous selling out, particularly in regards to Epstein:
(sorry for linking to NYPost)
Five Manhattan lawmakers wrote to New York Attorney General Letitia James on Friday, urging her to probe Manhattan DA Cy Vance's failed support eight years ago of more lenient sex offender monitoring for multi-millionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

The inexplicable, kid-glove treatment has already prompted outrage by one challenger for Vance's office.

Now, State Assembly members Dan Quart, Yuh-Line Niou and Harvey Epstein and City Councilmembers Margaret Chin and Carlina Rivera are asking James to expand an existing investigation into Vance's handling of the Harvey Weinstein case to include his staff's support of Epstein during a 2011 sex-offender registration hearing.

"It appears that the Manhattan District Attorney does not share our disgust at Jeffrey Epstein's crimes," the lawmakers wrote James.

I don't trust the guy, but I do trust Tish James and the other patriots. Hopefully they keep him on a short leash.

Everyone likes to think it's a zero sum game. The president is under an official impeachment inquiry right now. That's neither the beginning, middle, or end of this sordid saga.

Additionally, the Mueller investigation is still "ongoing". It's just now split into more than a dozen other ongoing investigations, most of which are still completely redacted.

The special counsel's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election is over, but federal prosecutors are pursuing numerous criminal inquiries that grew out of the investigation. The report issued by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, included a list of 14 criminal referrals, 12 of which were completely redacted. Here is what is known about the investigations that developed after referrals from the special counsel.
Several investigations stemmed from the inquiry into Michael D. Cohen, Donald J. Trump's former personal lawyer. Early last year, the special counsel turned over the Cohen investigation to federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York.

This is why it's important that the judiciary committee still tries to expedite the release of grand jury material. That's where Mueller's investigation currently hides.

For example, there's enough dirt in Trump's inauguration to spawn several independent special counsels.

Pretty good thread here, the judge basically tore the DoJ OLC opinion to pieces and says that there's no reason that a piece of paper that has never been tested in court could or should be used as a hollowed legal opinion. He also provided several hypotheticals as to why this immunity would be impractical to enforce, several of which could be be construed as directly relevant to the previous convictions by the Special Counsel and the ongoing litigation against Roger Stone:

If only Mueller had the spine this judge does.

This last couple of weeks is the beginning of the end... But for Trump... Or Democracy?

(I could be a sensationalist journalist, me!)

Hopefully the appeal doesn't take long.

Edit - Saw the above post. Excellent.

If only Mueller had the spine this judge does.

By forcing the issue the DoJ has actually put themselves in a bit of a predicament. The higher court judges could rule in their favor (I don't see how, given the previous opinions that the president was not immune to subpoena)...or they could say that it doesn't apply at all to state investigations (which would then make it open season for NY), or the Supreme Court could nuke the entire thing from orbit, which would put Mueller's charges on the table within the statutes of limitations.

I'd be really worried if this hit the supreme court. I mean, there are a COUPLE of sane-enough conservative judges that could swap to the liberal side on this, but it would be a nail biter.

Still, the risk of them nuking the entire memo would probably make DOJ hesitant to appeal further if they get struck down twice.

As much as I hope these would get subponeaed, I'm not getting my hopes up untill the inevitable appeal to the supreme court

It'd go to the Supreme Court. Which, even as fucked as it is, I doubt would rule that the President can't be investigated. They might go so far as to overturn the DOJ memo.
Provided if Supreme Court even takes up the matter. But if it does go to Supreme Court we probably won't hear about their ruling several months from now, correct?

If the current Supreme Court is the deciding factor, those tax returns will never be released. You can put all the legal arguments you want down. The GOP have defied gravity at this point to protect Trump. They're too deep in the hole to see daylight.

That almost certainly wouldn't be the case.

Considering he's always escorted by federal agents it would essentially be like calling "Order 66" to them while they protected him. Even ex-presidents have Secret Service for 10 years after they serve.

Edit: Typed "Code 66" and not "Order 66". Oops!

It's probably been answered here, but why can this demand not go straight to the IRS for them to turn over Trump's returns?

Anyone else think it's possible he's rushing through his Putin checklist because he's been told they can't stop this and he knows he'll be ruined and have to resign?

Nah. Roberts ain't destroying his legacy for Trump, and this argument is so basically insane that he wouldn't even be the only conservative to join the liberals.
