President Donald Trump granted a full pardon on Tuesday to George Papadopoulos, a former campaign aide who pleaded guilty as part of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump also pardoned Alex van der Zwaan, 36, the Dutch son-in-law of Russian billionaire German Khan. Van der Zwaan was sentenced to 30 days in prison and fined $20,000 for lying to U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigators about contacts with an official in Trump's 2016 campaign.

Their names were included in a wave of pre-Christmas pardons announced by the White House. Trump granted full pardons to 15 people, including three former Republican lawmakers, and commuted all or part of the sentences of five others.

Also receiving pardons were three former Republican lawmakers, including former Representative Chris Collins of New York.

Favors to Erik Prince, for sure.

Not going to do him any favors when the DoJ is no longer under his influence.

So even more war criminals who murdered muslims eh? Trump sure has a type.
What's the historical reason the president even has this power?
The framers of the constitution argued back and forth about it for a long time and somehow those who were for it won. Historically it was a relic of English law granted to the kings.

As if this is even a thing in modern politics what a fucking wack and stupid idea.

I cannot believe this is actually written into American political powers. It's surreal he's just allowed to pardon whoever the fuck he wants.

What's the historical reason the president even has this power?
Historically, it is a method for the rulers to build better relations with ordinary people by pardoning convictions that were popularly seen as unjust. In the US in particular, the pardon has historically been more heavily used by left-wing/progressive presidents in order to address legitimate injustices. Modern Republicans have used the pardon sparringly, particularly since the War on Drugs shifted perceptions about crime in the country.

The pardon is thus historically an acknowledgment that the justice system is flawed and there are innocent people who get convicted of crimes or people are unduly punished for minor crimes. The pardon gives those people an avenue to seek relief from that injustice.

The biggest issue with the pardon in the US is that it isn't used enough to address the massive issues in unjust sentencing in this country. Those problems need more fundamental changes to fix, but the pardon could be used to offer some more immediate help.

The best solution to a man like Trump having the pardon is to just not let him be President in the first place. If the people who make the rules are corrupt, no amount of rules will stop them.

I knew this was going to happen, but it's still so damn crazy watching it happen in real-time. Literal murderers and crooks getting off.

Pardoning more war criminals and murderers.

Those people better not leave the country, because by pseudo transitive properties they claim they are guilty of international crimes (Specifically talking about the Blackwater murdering psychopaths), and I would love them to use the pardon as a means of evidence to arrest them in another country.

Yeah all these "norms" they never expected people to violate have all been violated. One thing good Trump did was show just how fucked up the presidency is. But congress won't ever come together enough to put actual restraints on some of that power.
This isn't a norm being violated. Any president can pardon anyone for any reason at all, with no limits. He's acting perfectly within his rights. It's just a power he's exercising purely for unrepentant and guilty political criminals and murderers.

So fucking stupid that we allow this.

In fact, something needs to be done about how much power a lame duck President has.

Why does he even bother? They can't do anything for him.

Some of those are just about Trump's mission to wipe away every criminal conviction Mueller did.

Others could be favors that were already done for him and this is the payback. And I wouldn't be surprised if some of those or upcoming pardons are connected to literal payoffs. There's an open investigation into quid pro quo for Trump pardons looking into just that.

Your system is extremely flawed when people can commit crimes to help a sitting president with that president then having the authority to pardon them.

The Mueller ones were inevitable win or lose, but the fucking war criminals shows how much the PoS just hates Arabs and Muslims. Hope someone papers Susan Collins' house with this headline.

This is probably why Barr retired early, to keep this off his resumé.
