Games didn't have a sense of place until Tomb Raider came out. It was the first game to ever make me truly care about the protagonist. There were some good games in 1996, Tomb Raider tops them all and it's not even close.

It was a great game but I wouldn't say it was the best of that year.

Mario 64 was that year...

None of those voting options reflect how I feel so I ain't voting.

There were a lot of good games that came out that year, but Tomb Raider is up there. I agree that Super Mario 64 is the best one.

SM64 it's probably the objective take, but I honestly loved Tomb Raider better. The level design and atmosphere of that game was amazing.

No.

Duke Nukem 3D it is for me. In fact I just played through the Duke 3D expansions for the first time this year on my PS Vita. The D.C. one is great, others are kind of meh. Main game and its 4th episode are a timeless classic.

Sorry, Super Mario 64 is the game that defined 3D platforming forever. The amazement I felt from playing that game for the first time at Toys R Us (RIP) will never be topped.

Well actually I take that back, psvr blew me away. But still, Mario beats Lara.

Tomb Raider doesn't even take the #2 spot IMO (after Super Mario 64, which should really render this whole thread null by default considering its... well... Super Mario 64.).

Other games that came out in 1996 that I could argue were better than Tomb Raider 1 (but am far too lazy to actually argue in favor of):

Pokemon Red/Green
Resident Evil
Quake
Mario Kart 64
Diablo

Tomb Raider isn't even a Top 10 game of 1996.

Mario 64
Quake 1
Diablo 1
Resident Evil 1
Super Mario RPG
Twisted Metal 2
Wave Race 64
Mario Kart 64
Tekken 2
MK Trilogy
Final Doom

That's 11 games far better than Tomb Raider.

Damn, I was all set to agree and then remembered Resident Evil came out in 1996 so.....yeah, joint best game of the year.

I played original tomb raider so many times, it's just brilliant.

I voted Hell Yeah because the impact TR had on me in 1996 and how it felt... wow... still gets chills when I remember it.

The levels design the atmosphere the puzzles and the freedom you had controlling Lara and the memorable soundtracks... yeah... magical.

Wasn't even the best PlayStation game that year. Mario 64, Resident Evil 1, and Quake were all way better. Dramatically so.

I started playing it again earlier this year, and damn I'm really impressed with how well made i is. I think the controls still work pretty well.

I played Mario 64 for the first time this year, and as cool as analog controls are, the camera was absolute shit, and level design seemed thoughtless.

Tomb Raider was very refreshing in comparison.

So yeah, it's probably my favorite 96 game.

EDIT: Resident Evil came out that year, which I hope to revisit before this year ends, so maybe this will change.
