Games didn't have a sense of place until Tomb Raider came out. It was the first game to ever make me truly care about the protagonist. There were some good games in 1996, Tomb Raider tops them all and it's not even close.

Exactly. You get it.I voted Hell Yeah because the impact TR had on me in 1996 and how it felt... wow... still gets chills when I remember it.
The levels design the atmosphere the puzzles and the freedom you had controlling Lara and the memorable soundtracks... yeah... magical.
Half of these games were 97 in Europe ( or never released here in the first place).
