WHRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

why is the disc drive so incredibly loud? I feel like it's going to break or fall over or destroy my disc every time i turn the thing on. I know the disc stops spinning after a moment but it is ridiculous.
Does it whir less when it's horizontal? I have mine vert.

first world problems bloopity blahblah etc

I've never had mine vertical to compare, but it is still alarming loud horizontal compared to any other console I've owned.

It is loud. Calms down in like 15 seconds, but it definitely revs up for a bit there. Seems to rev up for 15 seconds every 45 min or so even if you're playing a digital game, it's bizarre

Even if you play a digital ps3 game, the disk in the ps5 will spin every now and then for some odd reason, and you can hear it very well lol.

I feel like my drive has gotten louder over time, like you said, it does stop after a few but it's still annoying.

Mine is vertical because I can't fit this big bitch under my tv like I did with my PS4 🥴

The PS4 did the same, I guess that's just how it is. I don't understand why it periodically spins up again though, even if you're merely watching youtube

I only have one PS5 game, Miles Morales, that made a loud whirr or some clicking sound. Then it calms down. Playing PS4 games though, makes a slight noise at first but not nearly the same thing and then also quiets down.

I had to send mine in for repairs the other day because the disk drive sounded like it was grinding up whatever disc was in there, it was deeply unpleasant to listen to. Had to keep my console horizontal since launch, but it sometimes happened in that configuration too and has become more common lately. It was especially bad when watching Blu-Ray movies.

Hopefully Sony actually fix my console and don't deem it "just a bit of noise" and send it back as-is.

Don't leave a disc in it? If I'm not actively playing a disc-based game, I take it out. So far, I've been 99% digital and it makes nary a beep on startup.

I really want a PS5, but I'm also OK with waiting on a revision as long as this stuff is happening.

I've not noticed my PS5 disc drive being any louder than most other console disc drives? Granted I tend to give stuff like that a lot of mental leeway for noise, as I know it's temporary and to some extent unavoidable.

I hope Sony gets the current, shitty build quality and coil whine under control. After the abysmal PS4 Pro I'm not suffering another piece of shit Sony console. I'm not even interested in buying a PS5 if I could, until they sort this shit out. Consoles are supposed to be trouble-free, little gaming machines. These recent machines are fucking awful.

I like the disc drive starting up. Gives it a hefty feel I enjoy.

It's maddeningly loud. I can understand when it's installing a game from disc, but there's gotta be a slower read speed for just confirming the disc is in the drive.

While I fully understand that every console spins a disc up now and again (especially when it starts), I have no idea why the disc drive in the PS5 is so exponentially LOUDER than consoles from prior generations.

like, I remember a lot of props given to them when the official breakdown video came out that they'd put little dampeners in it to stop vibrations and whatnot. What happened?

Thankfully I'm a 100% digital gamer now but I have a few older PS4 discs. I have considered rebuying a couple of them digitally because, for example, I don't really want to leave my Street Fighter 30th Anniversary disc in the machine because of the crazy noise it constantly makes.

Yeah it's nuts. Luckily I only own one disc game, and I don't like it much so it stays in the box. I don't mind the initial spin up check, but the 'once and hour' or so spins are alarming as hell, especially at night. It would even run that disc check when playing other, digital-owned games, makes no sense.

I kind of want to dig out my old launch Dreamcast and compare. That thing was pretty noisy too.

Dreamcast is insane. So loud. My PS4 Pro while playing TLOU2 is the only thing that's ever beaten my Dreamcast for noise.

They've never been this, especially since the 360 era.

That's why I remove the disc if I'm not planning on playing a disc-based game, which is more often than not lately. I usually only play one game at a time and my only retail game I have left unplayed is Watch Dogs Legion. I've been going digital lately.

TLOU2 was my first experience with LoudStation as well. Although annoying, I like the idea of literally hearing our hardware struggle to eek out the last bits of graphical goodness at the end of a generation.

The PS5 is just throwing the door open and announcing it's presence out of the gate lol.

I have heard 3 PS5s in action.

One was quiet in game but made an annoying high pitched fan whirl sound in idle and rest mode. It has a delta fan and gets very hot. Much hotter than the PS4 Pro.

One was a little bit louder ingame but silent in idle (mine). Still quieter than one of the newest PS4 Pros. This one has a Nidec fan and doesnt get as hot as the first one.

The last one had a very loud fan and the drive made insane noises for 30 secs every hour or so. Like something is rotating inside and hitting the chassis.

I'm 100% sure its a hardware defect, because the 2 other PS5s had PS4 Pro like disc drives.

All had different levels of coil whine. Mine makes a low buzz, the other two have very high pitched coil whine.

Edit: Elaboration.

Yep, I always say I'm firing up the weed whacker when I turn on the PS5. Thankfully it only lasts for that 15 seconds or so, but like others have mentioned, why does it randomly spin up again for a few seconds when playing a digital game? It's tolerable with how short it lasts, but still appalling that it's a thing.

Does the same for me. Or says something to the effect of a unrecognized disc...despite the disc being TLOU2.

Is it possible that the console is so quiet aside from the disc drive, that it's just way more noticeable when the disc is spinning? I put a disc in my XSX a couple weeks ago and it was shockingly loud too.

mine is also vertical and it is extremely loud when I turn it on sometimes, it always does the stupid loud spin up every hour bullshit though

absolutely not
it is extremely loud
much louder than the PS4 Pro ever was but it only lasts like 30 seconds

I have an XSX too, the disc drive in the PS5 is WAY louder

I'm not going to say the thing is quiet, but it's also spinning at a very high RPM. It also doesn't stay that way for a long time unless you're installing a game.

The only thing that's odd is the 30-45 minute DRM check the system does with it for some reason (even when playing something else) that can likely be patched, as I doubt it was intentional.

Arent the sex drives and uhd drives noisy in general too?

I tried a regular bluray movie on the ps5 and it seemed quieter and couldn't hear it over the movie audio. Are old ps4 games as loud when reading the disk? Maybe the spin velocity is just that great at top speed that if you don't have good dampening it's just gonna be damn loud cuz of the vibration?

The worst part is that it spins every hour or so even if you're not playing that game.

Plus now I think about it I remember them specifically highlighting adding rubber mounts so that it doesn't make that much noise.

As someone still stuck on PS4 I cannot sympathise with 15 seconds of noise when my entire existence is FWOOOOOO

I think about this every time I see someone mention the loud disc drive.

This reminds me of an old thread (*from the "old place") where someone was complaining that the beep would always wake up their kid.
Seeing that person talk about ways they tried to make it quieter and failing made me make this gif, lol.

I actually haven't tried putting in a disc, yet since I'm 99% digital. Kinda want to try it to see what the fuzz is about.
