You're not alone, OP. I liked Tales of Zestiria game a lot too. The soundtrack is fantastic, and the characters are top-tier. Apparenly people hated Rose for replacing Alisha, but I find Rose a more interesting character, so I'm glad they gave her the leading role. I liked the combat as well.
This and Berseria are my 2 favorite Tales of games -- I enjoyed both of these much more than Vesperia, the one everyone likes (though I liked that too, just not as much). I hope Arise can get to this level of music and character goodness.
The only thing I hated was the DLC. That was boring as hell. But hey, it's DLC and I got it for free, so... eh.

It's better than Berseria. Best OST in the Tales of series and the Rising up scene is the best scene in the Tales of series. It's let down by constant backtracking and bizarre equipment system.

Yeah, have to go with the OP! It may not be the best Tales games, but it is a pretty good game. It may have its issues here and there, but its not something so extreme as detractors would suggest. Plus it gets some extra love points, for being the game thay gave us Sorey x Mikleo!
I always thought the hate was a bit much for Zestiria too. There are some severe, obvious missteps in regards to the story, and it's not gonna make it near the top of my Tales list, but I enjoyed the game enough to beat it and that's not something I'll say for all Tales games. Hell, I almost dropped Vesperia on my playthrough because it was getting too dull and annoying, never got to that point with Zestiria.

It was awesome for the most part. The characters and music were stellar. As mentioned by others the last boss was a bloody piss take and as for the equipment upgrade system... I just got through it still being 🤷♂️ about how it worked. Also "White Light" is such a killer opening track
Too short / ends when it feels like it's picking up steam but I love it too. The bgm for most of the dungeons are ace.
Berseria was 10€ on PSN, so I went for it and I'm downloading it right now.
Just so you know, I'm holding you accountable, if I dont like it.

I enjoyed Berseria, my first Tales game, a whole bunch, but avoided Zesteria after seeing many bad reviews. This thread is making me reconsider that though, maybe I'll give this a shot.

I do own the game on steam but now that I'm playing Berseria I don't know if I'll be able to go back and play this, the cast seems alright tho, especially the bare chested guy with the guns.

It was alright, but my biggest issue is that the story turns into a big mess that stopped making sense entirely towards the end (from what I remember) and that the dungeons are fairly dull to the point it feels like assets thrown together (square corridors... so many squares...). It has a lot going for it, but these drag it down a lot for me. And it'll still never not feel weird how Alisha role was handled, as regardless of if it was always planned it certainly didn't feel that way.
I watched a playthrough of this game, and it has the best synergy I've ever seen in a Tales of cast.

You're not alone, I love it too. It's currently my most played game on Steam at 143 hours played (Persona 4 Golden might beat it after NG+, but we'll see).
I was only two achievements away from 100%-ing ToZ, but I ended up not pursing the cooking stuff to the end. I should get that one of these days.

Not officially confirmed I guess, but yeah, he is. Sorey being gay was one of the reasons I enjoyed it.
It's in my top 5 in the series. I absolutely love everything about and I can't express how much of an underrated gem the game is.

Wow the anime really took some liberties huh?? LolBest couple too! :D
Though in the game there definitely was some hinting at them maybe becoming a gay couple down the road

It's really not as bad as people make it out to be... but it's by far my least favorite Tales Of game.
Minus Rose (I did not like her) the rest of the cast was great. This game also has one of my favorite vocal tracks in video games.
Lailah is fantastic and in general I think the parts of the game I've played are fine, but I still find the battle system way more confusing than it needs to be. And because I never get enough momentum to finish the whole game, I keep putting it down and then forgetting how to play it, which isn't a thing I normally worry about with Tales games.
At some point I'll either buckle down and finally finish this game after my fourth try, or I'll admit defeat and move on to Berseria.

This is the kind of game that should have been much better and would have been much better with a little more polish but due to the rushed development it ended-up with a messy battle and upgrade system.
But hey, at least I liked the cast which is more than I can say from other uneven entries like Xillia.
Oh yeah, these two are as canon as it gets. Another thing to like about the game is that it pretty much has both basically confirmed Gay and Lesbian (Rose and Alisha) main couples.

Loved the game and the characters.
They missed a great opportunity for a well done ship with Mik or the princess. The more adult casts with Berseria and Zesteria have been great

In the official manga Sorey also repeats that Mikleo is the most beautiful thing he can think of. In official artwork they are depicted in a yin-yang formation which is traditionally romantic symbolism in Japan (Tidus and Yuna from Final Fantasy X are depicted like this, for example).
And cute stuff like them tickling each other:
And Sorey turning down women's advances, no matter how attractive they are, and Rose commenting on how that's just how Sorey is.
And of course, Hideo Baba just flat out said that Mikleo is Sorey's "one and only" and that pairing Sorey with a female character just "wouldn't work".

Also, there's not much you can do about people who are "too uncomfortable." I still remember The Last of Us' DLC, where people literally were saying Ellie's lesbian kiss was "friendly" and that "some people (or cultures) are just like that" like LMAOOOO alright.
The thing is, it wasn't rushed - it had one of the longest development periods for a Tales game at 3.5 years and the biggest staff. It was a mess though.
I've always been told to stay away from it but I purchased Berseria on sale recently and if I like it enough I know I'll be tempted to check it out.
I've heard a lot of people say playing Berseria made them appreciate Zestiria a lot more due to how they are connected and how the latter retroactively fills in many of the lore gaps of the former.
Even with currently playing and enjoying Berseria, this sums up why the anime will be the extent of what I intend to bother with for Zestiria.
Personally it disappointed me because you could tell the game wash rushed and a bunch of plot points were just kind of dropped or dealt with in a very unceremonious fashion (I don't think it's a coincidence that the anime version changed a bunch of those things towards the end in ways that pretty much universally were an improvement)

The way gear worked was just offensively bad. I remember thinking it had to have been designed badly on purpose. Like others have said though you can pretty much ignore it. The only other thing I didn't like was how bland some of the environments and dungeons looked.
I did enjoy the combat and music though. I don't remember much of the story but I liked most of the characters.
