I think less of young men that experience migraines.
When you get down to it it's pretty sexist and deeply rooted in the idea of traditional gender roles, and i'm not even sure why I think like this because i'm a firm believer of mental health specialists, próstate exams, vasectomy, skin care and every damn thing that might be considered "unmanly" but aparently I draw the line at some poor guy with a thunderclap headache.
Sometimes the hypocrisy here bugs me. This is supposed to be a safe place. JDSN actually led with the FAULTS OF HIS OWN THINKING and posted it here not as pride but in a bit of self-acceptance and possibly reevaluation. No, this is NOT ablism and no this is NOT like gay-bashing or being racist as some have suggested. Yes, it's weird and it's a sexist way of thinking bred from ignorance. Until fairly recently, I'd never met a man who experienced migraines despite having one myself when I was, maybe 13. My wife gets debilitating migraines all the time, and I assumed that only women got migraines (YES THIS DEFIES LOGIC AS I AM A MAN) until my young daughter had a really bad headache once and I started researching. I discovered the side-fact that 9% of men are regular sufferers. I had no idea and erroneously assumed that they were gender-related. I figured mine was a fluke. I was completely ignorant. JDSN took his ignorance a step further and thought that men getting migraines were weaker in some way.
It *is* "
sexist and deeply rooted in the idea of traditional gender roles". His words. His realization.
Meet people where they are. A simple, hey man...that's silly. Here are some facts. A bunch of guys get them too. They're hereditary. They hurt like hell, like your worst headache x100. The pain tolerance for one of those is far worse than anything most guys suffer through, like, EVER. Guys who can deal with that get my respect. Now think of women who get them ALL THE TIME.
Explaining things to someone who's already meeting you halfway by even posting in this 'safe place' is how you can actually talk to people.
And before anyone says it: please don't turn this into an 'all people/middle ground' thing as is so common to tear down in pretty much EVERYWHERE these days.
Some things are bad. full stop.
Some things are good. full stop.
And believe it or not, against popular opinion, it's possible to have a contrary opinion, have discourse, spit OBJECTIVE FACTS (not personal facts), and have two parties walk away more learned and better for it.
That's my old man shit: I hate group-think, internet dogpiling, echo chambers, and lack of personal accountability.
JDSN is ignorant. Now he's informed. He's not the devil.
EDIT -
- I still enjoy holding doors open for people behind me
- I miss a good Let's Play, I don't like Twitch gameplays at all
- Video essays over 30 minutes - ugh.
- I'm working on modern pronouns. he/she/them/they/her/him. It's hard, but I'll get it.
- 90's hip-hop is God era. But we're seeing god-tier bars from legends right now. Busta/Meth/Thought/KRS...
- Amen to Procedurals and Episodic shows. Especially Sci-Fi!! Everything doesn't have to be serialized.
- I appreciate streaming but I'll miss theaters. VR theaters have been a good enough middle ground for me. For now.
- C'mon...Phil Collins is supreme
- Youtube influencers - Pro game reviewers - I see little difference, frankly.
- So much social media. I wish I understood HOW to best use it all....except Twitter. Ugh.
- They take up so much space, but damn if I don't love physical books.
- Event TV is better than binge TV. The Mandalorian says hello. Made for TV Movies were awesome. Even further: TUBI is on to something with its retro sensibility. I miss TV guides. You miss it, you missed it! The conversation and the event is usually better than the actual media!
- I really miss R&B and Neo-Soul. My heart aches for it. It's soul food.
-1.5/2x speed podcasts?? That's EVIL.
