Legend of Zelda criticisms are played out while Metroid remains a sacred cow.

Replace with DCEU and MCU respectively if you want to @ me about being in the wrong forum.

I think less of young men that experience migraines.

When you get down to it it's pretty sexist and deeply rooted in the idea of traditional gender roles, and i'm not even sure why I think like this because i'm a firm believer of mental health specialists, próstate exams, vasectomy, skin care and every damn thing that might be considered "unmanly" but aparently I draw the line at some poor guy with a thunderclap headache.

this is pure ableism. You should take a good hard look at yourself in the mirror and be ashamed. Replace "I think less of young man who have migraines" with "I think less of young man who are gay" or "I think less of young man who are black" and you wouldn't even have posted this here, now would you? Shame on you.

I never actually understood the appeal of Seinfeld.
Thank you! I just don't know how that particular type of comedy made the show one of the most successful of all time.

I think people who claim they fell asleep during a movie (OR VIDEOGAME) are full of shit.
Lol. Yes this too.

Although, technically I have on both, but only because I've been super tired and shouldn't have really started doing either activity anyway.

Definitely not for the reasons of being bored or disengaged.

This is so fucking weird mate not gonna lie. I don't see how the traditional male gender role has anything to do with not having migraines...

For me I just prefer that type of entertainment. I watch Youtube and Twitch almost daily, but I haven't watched a movie or TV show in probably a year and a half.

I haven't had a tv or listen to the radio at home for 10 years so it always felt like an alien environment when I take Uber and listen to the radio.

Instead of being overwhelmed by media, I prefer the 80s were I would watch random cartoons ,shows, movies on TV without having any sense of order or continuity as a viewer because of lack of information

I'd watch 1 episode, miss 3 in a row and continue with the next one and suddenly I'd realize it was the finale.

Rewatching The Simpsons as an adult and realising Homer is not funny just a truly terrible husband/father also that Marge is the most important character in the entire show.

Hardcover books are so much more satisfying to read than ebooks.

If you enjoy a podcast/youtube video/etc, why are you 1.5x speeding it? Yes time is a finite resource, but relax and enjoy the content you enjoy.

OH MY GOD thank you, I feel this exact way too. All these streaming services and stuff are full of stuff to watch and there's so much info about them, I feel paralysed. Makes me so nostalgic for television where you'd just randomly watch stuff instead and discover stuff you never would've otherwise.

This is also the reason why I'm not really into YouTube beyond the occasional meme, music video, or trailer. My friends will link me stuff to watch and especially if it's longer than 10 minutes, I just walk out like that Seinfeld gif.

I know for me, at least, a lot of the podcasts/a few of the videos I listen to/watch are for just ingesting new knowledge for work, regardless of whether I especially enjoy it or not.

That makes sense, though if I'm given a 4 hour training I'd rather make use of that full 4 hours as opposed to rushing it. Not simply because it's "free" time where I don't have to worry about fucking up a clients numbers (public accounting), but because if I rush and miss something then I look like a super idiot.

Physical media is more important and precious to me than downloads. Convenience is all fun and games until the service runs out, or the content is rotated out, or DRM kicks in, or your hard drive gets fried. Fuck that. Give me my physical copies.
You forgot the joy of boxing them up, disassembling your Ikea bookshelf, reassembling your IKEA bookshelf, and then unboxing and reorganizing everything when you move.

Social media are one of the worst developments of this century, and are making people aggresively ignorant and deluded, if not actively driving them insane. This year is just making it a lot more obvious, but I've been saying this for a while: they're just a fucking cancer replacing actual personal relations, learning and introspection with a perpetual shallow information high.

- When horror is at it's absolute best, no other genre of film is touching it. It's the only one with the most expansive depth in creativity and which explores every element of emotion
- Pixar *IS* Disney and the people who insist on separating the two are weird to me
- A dumb, over-the-top action movie like Shoot 'Em Up is far more entertaining and memorable than all of the MCU. And yes, that even includes my overall #1 GoTG
- Investing is a more valuable financial tool than saving will ever be, which too many people neglect because they believe the barrier to entry is an exorbitant amount of money (it's not, you can literally open an account with only a $1 with some brokerages)
- Directly assisting people is the superior form of philanthropy/charity. Anything less is merely an exercise in ego stroking and a way to benefit from tax write-offs
- People who blanketly oppose any form of accelerationism are ones steeped so much in privilege they're ignorant to how unsustainable and harmful our current world machinations are. Change should never be weighed against personal comfortability, and honestly fuck your feelings if you actually believe this

right there with you. technology/easy mass communication was supposed to be this great thing but the culture built up around the socials has created a society of maladjusted idiotic sociopathic teens/kids/adults.

looking back on it now, most everything (the bigotry/homophobia/etc i could do without of course) was better in the 90s and it's sad how much we've backslid since then. just the sense of living for yourself and not for your phone or likes.

this is definitely old man yelling at clouds, but i do miss that time quite a bit.

Sometimes the hypocrisy here bugs me. This is supposed to be a safe place. JDSN actually led with the FAULTS OF HIS OWN THINKING and posted it here not as pride but in a bit of self-acceptance and possibly reevaluation. No, this is NOT ablism and no this is NOT like gay-bashing or being racist as some have suggested. Yes, it's weird and it's a sexist way of thinking bred from ignorance. Until fairly recently, I'd never met a man who experienced migraines despite having one myself when I was, maybe 13. My wife gets debilitating migraines all the time, and I assumed that only women got migraines (YES THIS DEFIES LOGIC AS I AM A MAN) until my young daughter had a really bad headache once and I started researching. I discovered the side-fact that 9% of men are regular sufferers. I had no idea and erroneously assumed that they were gender-related. I figured mine was a fluke. I was completely ignorant. JDSN took his ignorance a step further and thought that men getting migraines were weaker in some way.

It *is* "sexist and deeply rooted in the idea of traditional gender roles". His words. His realization.

Meet people where they are. A simple, hey man...that's silly. Here are some facts. A bunch of guys get them too. They're hereditary. They hurt like hell, like your worst headache x100. The pain tolerance for one of those is far worse than anything most guys suffer through, like, EVER. Guys who can deal with that get my respect. Now think of women who get them ALL THE TIME.

Explaining things to someone who's already meeting you halfway by even posting in this 'safe place' is how you can actually talk to people.

And before anyone says it: please don't turn this into an 'all people/middle ground' thing as is so common to tear down in pretty much EVERYWHERE these days.

Some things are bad. full stop.
Some things are good. full stop.
And believe it or not, against popular opinion, it's possible to have a contrary opinion, have discourse, spit OBJECTIVE FACTS (not personal facts), and have two parties walk away more learned and better for it.

That's my old man shit: I hate group-think, internet dogpiling, echo chambers, and lack of personal accountability.

JDSN is ignorant. Now he's informed. He's not the devil.

Why is someone falling asleep watching a film so hard to believe. Before my sleep apnoea was diagnosed I fell asleep during films on the regular lol. More people have it than we probably know for sure with how overweight Western countries are.

Hell even now that I have a handle on it if I'm comfy and not had enough sleep the previous night I'll doze off during a film

Today's kids are wack

They're not, the conditions they're in are though. Helicopter parenting, undue panic about crime when we're in the safest time in history too much screen time which tbfthey're hardly the only cohort that are guilty of that. Too much social media instead of face to face contact, and so on.

Chess is recognized as a sport by the international Olympic committee. Darts and snooker are sports and require no physical exertion.
Competitive video games meet all the requirements of being a sport.

All fair points (honestly), but I personally don't think of any of those things as sports. My take isn't some hard line in the sand where I'd go around telling people who play in recognized sports that they aren't actual sports, but I just don't think of them that way. Hence, my old fashioned and out of touch opinion.

Today it is worse because now bigotry and various phobias also invades your home and privacy, even supported by goverments and corporations. Previously you just had to switch the tv off.
There is now better support and aid too due to social media fortunately

I don't get the appeal. I can understand checking out parts if you get stuck or checking out parts of gameplay.

But I don't understand extensively watching people play games.

My dad likes to sit next to me and watch me play video games. Though I do ask him for his input on where to go and what to do, so I suppose it's not quite the same as passively watching a Let's Play on YouTube.

He views it as watching a very elaborate, involved, long TV show.

I think you're 100% entitled to your opinion, but in case it helps better understand: the appeal of watching long plays is less about the game and more about the people you're watching. I didn't really get into watching these until somewhat recently when I finally got into Giant Bomb. I watch a lot of their videos now because I enjoy their humor, rapport, and perspectives. When I put on a video, I'm mostly anticipating watching something I'll find funny, not something that'll be chiefly entertaining because of the gameplay itself. In that way, it's not any different to people who really got into Mystery Science Theater 3000 ("Why are you watching people talk over movies instead of just watching the movie itself?")

In a year of COVID, I've also found that I like watching people play games as a group because it reminds me of old play sessions I'd have with others as a kid. It's a distraction from the current world to watch a group of people who are funny play a game with each other and react in a way reminiscent of that.

A tertiary point is that for some people, they enjoy watching games that they may not feel interested in actually grinding through. For example, if you struggle with puzzle games, but are interested in seeing a puzzle game's story. Or if you're jumpy with survival horror games, but watching someone play through it allows you to still experience the game in some way.

Not looking to change your mind or anything, but just thought I'd present that perspective. I think questioning why people don't just play the game itself misses out on 90% of the appeal of watching streamers. And I say this as someone who also used to not understand the appeal.

Do you not worry you'll miss stuff? I'll have to try it maybe

That's what I feel.

I only listen during my work commute, since I don't have to think at all about where I'm going, and very small things like just being aware of my surroundings and changing lanes doesn't distract me enough to lose attention in the book.
If I'm driving around an unknown area, I can't do it.
I also stick to lower level reading in the car, because you are right, in that it is harder to concentrate on books, even in a simple situation.
Things like Star Wars novels and other adventure stories. I wouldn't listen to something like Game of Thrones while driving because I might miss something important if a zone out for even a second.
Radio dramas in general are really good for the car.

My old man take: Watching people play video games is weird. Ill just play them myself.
This old man agrees with you so much about this one. It is just something I cannot wrap my head around.
Literally the worst thing in the world growing up was having to sit there in a room full of friends for your turn to "have next." And that was actually fun as we were in the same room talking shit, etc. I truly cannot wrap my head around the fact of watching virtual strangers play a game when I could be playing that game.
The only situation it makes a little sense to me is if a kid really wants to play a game but does not own it or cannot afford it. And even then it seems more like torture to me than something enjoyable.

I didn't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has already been covered, but...

I don't like it that folks are more or less expected to be reachable at any time. I mean how everyone has cell phones, everyone is on their phones a lot, everyone knows everyone else has a phone and is on it a lot, so there's an expectation that you're available to be contacted whenever.

I've had many uncomfortable conversations with friends and coworkers/supervisors that no, I am not going to pick up the phone or reply to your messages after a certain time of night or on my holiday/vacation or after I've already put in overtime/just talked to you yesterday/need time to myself/have other plans/literally anything else that isn't anyone else's business. Just because I read your message doesn't mean I'm obligated to attend to it right away.

If it isn't an urgent issue or an emergency of some kind, I'll still make a good faith effort to respond when it makes sense for me to do so. It just seems like my personal boundaries about when and how I make myself avaliable to people is conflicting more and more with popular expectations about them.

Edit: Okay so as an example, just last week, one of my supervisors tried to call me 20 minutes prior to my shift while I was commuting to work on a bicycle. I didn't see it until I actually got to work, because I stash my phone in my backpack and don't look at it while I'm traveling. I know that there are phone attachments I could get for my handlebars but dammit, whatever it is, can wait 30 fucking minutes while I'm en route, right? Apparently not.

Supervisor -- "Hey I called you! What happened!"
Me -- "I was on my way in, I didn't see your call until I got here, sorry"
Supervisor -- "It was nothing important, but I was concerned. Why didn't you pick up?"
Me -- "I ride a bicycle to work."
Supervisor -- "So what does that mean?"
Me -- "I'm sorry, I don't understand?"
Supervisor -- "Why didn't you answer my call?"
Me -- "Because I don't use my phone while I travel. I'm paying attention to my surroundings."
Supervisor -- "Oh, okay. Well good for you."
Me -- "Ah, thanks."

...I just...what even is this interaction. I don't get it.

Another old man take: I don't like asking Alexa questions. Whenever I ask Alexa what the weather is I feel like a snooty upper class snob sitting back in his armchair as his minions do his bidding and file his fingernails and tell him that life is all about him. I'll just check the weather the old fashioned way by checking my iPhone 12.

I also respond with "Fuck off" every time Alexa tells me to have a nice day.

I totally get sim racer eSports. It's taking a disciplin that already exists and putting into a virtual realm and it still has the same rules as a normal, actual race. I've watched a few races and it's no different to watching a live F1, Super GT, whatever race.

How, here's why I have an out of touch opinion -

I do not get the rest of it. It all strikes me as absolute nonsense. I just can't wrap my head around why it's a big deal.

I know this has been said a lot by others, but for me its not really about watching the game, but the person playing it and them being entertaining. It helps if its a game I also play, but it doesn't have to be. I watch people on Twitch because I find them entertaining and it doesn't really matter what game they're playing. Sometimes it will be a game I don't play and will never play, it doesn't really matter.

It helps if you play a lot of team based competitive multiplayer games. I didn't give a shit about esports until I started playing more of these games. When you play the game you do your best to win and climb the competitive ladder. The people at the very top are the ones in esports, and its interesting to see how they play the game at its highest potential. Just like watching meat sports, if you're into the game, you want to watch people play it who are the best at it.

What the fuck did I just read? Curious if you were raised in a society that perpetuates this kind of thinking

Japan makes the best stuff, but the things Japan thinks are the best stuff are actually the worst stuff.
Not sure about the latter half of your statement but yes, Japan does make the best stuff.

This is also some racist outdated bullshit. I've got to get out of this thread.

I think this is exactly why I don't get it. I don't play competitive multiplayer often, if at all, and if I do it's usually on a very limited basis. I suppose I can see why as someone invested in it, you'd want to see how people at the top of their game play.
