Completely different scenarios.

We'll see a different T'Challa at some point down the line in a rebooted Black Panther (unless the MCU survives until the heat death of the universe.)

Well if you want something similar, Dumbledore was recasted after Richard Harris passed and that franchise continued, same with Spartacus after Andy Whitfield died, so why not T'Challa?

The MCU's easily got another 10-15 years in the tank at least, especially if it keeps struggling to build momentum like it's been lately.

Call me selfish but it'd be nice if T'Challa was usable again before I turned 40.

I mean they probably did it out of respect for how loved and respected the character and himself are, he was huge, plus also more black hero lead female representation was a good and logical play as well. They probably had multiverse in their pocket to bring the character back with a new actor. It's probably all of the above.

As for replacing her, strange they haven't, I don't think there would be much outrage, perhaps it's a contract issue or they are trying to help her come around to her senses but something will break if money comes into play if she continues to play hard ball stupidity. They could be replacing her and haven't ironed out the details and new actor yet.

And I imagine there are examples where a character wasn't recast after the actor dies. Its a complicated situation, and different people are going to make different decisions. That recast debate raged on this forum after his death and a lot of people were on board with a potential Shuri/Nakia Black Panther. I think they should have recast TChalla but I also don't think handing the mantle to another is a horrible idea. Where Marvel genuinely fucked up is not recasting Shuri after she exposed herself.

I think that there are talented young black responsible vaccinated actresses out there that would do a fantastic job in this role and would kill for the opportunity.

It is extremely unfair to them and unfair to fans to instead keep this selfish, dangerous, irresponsible imbecile as a role model.

What is Ryan Coogler thinking? He should have fired her ass the moment she came out as antivax!

This will reflect very badly on him. I am losing respect for him already and he was one of my favorites. I'm not letting him hide behind Disney. This is on him too. Fucking hell. Is this how you honor Chadwick? A man who died of cancer?

I'm not going to the movie theater to watch a fanatical covidiot. It's fucking disgusting what they're doing to the franchise.

Ryan Coogler can't unilaterally fire the presumed lead of a big budget Disney movie, it's up to the studio. It's not as if this is Creed 3.

It's only going to get worse for the studio as closer to the release date of the movie interviewers (naughty ones ignoring demands not to) will try to squeeze in questions about vaccines with the actor, and most reviewers will probably mention the irony of Shuri's actor being anti-science, etc. It's just leading to a humiliating time, but ultimately all Disney really care is if enough butts will be in seats. If their marketing research and metrics say so, then they'll simply plunge on ahead with her at the helm.

I can't imagine the studio would pick an actor over Ryan Coogler, the guy who made THE best MCU movie of all time. If he threatened to quit, they would've fired her.

It is more likely he is letting his personal relationship with her cloud his judgement. Celebrity Loyalty to friends over the "self-righteous" mob is a trope at this point. I think the last example was Giancarlo Esposito, defending an indefensible who was fired by Disney just days ago. It never ends.

Oh I 100% believe they would get rid of him rather the person in front of the camera. Far easier to have someone else come in and finish the movie than reshoot all Wright's scenes.

Recast her.

They've been filming for over two months without her. Just recast her. Put an end to this nonsense.

Yeah, at this point, they should recast, and if possible, push the release date back. Basically treat the situation like that one movie where they recast Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer. I guess the (totally not ideal) alternative would be to finish the movie somehow and then just fire her immediately after.

Sorry, I think this is naive. The actor portraying the next Black Panther greatly affects the whole Marvel universe going forward. If you think Ryan Coogler has that power… I disagree.

At best, they would (and for all we know did) hear his concerns. Threatening to quit is not a realistic option either.

If it's Cooglers fault AT ALL, it's like 5% him, 95% Disney/Marvel.

I dont get why they would put up with so much bullshit for Letitia Wright. She has done nothing of note outside of Marvel movies, and even in those, she isnt some incredible actress that blows everyone away.

I would get putting up with all this extra crap if she was some next level actress that would change the MCU forever... but all this for Shuri??? lol. Seems like they should just cut ties and re-cast.

I lost all interest in this movie when it became clear they were shelving T'Challa. We have a great black male hero for kids to look up to and Disney/Marvel are removing him from the slate when white superheroes continue to have their stories told.

I remember a fair amount of hype for her back around the time of the first Black Panther movie as this promising rising actress. I believe the industry, Disney included, had high hopes for her to emerge as a major star.

She's proven herself to be not worth it since at least from social media response but her potentially further screwing up an already screwball production is the kind of thing that should get her ass booted.

Man, I really hope they just drop her, recast T'Challa and move on. They have the money and goodwill banked to take the time and do this right.

Midgar, With Love
At this point, I'm starting to suspect I'd be happier with a goddamned CGI Peter Cushing leading this flick.

In case you were wondering if Shuri was black panther or not, the bottom is Disney+'s new banner for Marvel.

Just kill her off in the film. Even better kill her character off via a virus that could have been prevented.

It's such a shame that they're seemingly catering to her bullshit. There should be a bit more dignity involved with the production as a whole. What a disgrace.

Not really catering to her per se. Your favorite actor could be a "Zone A"er too and no one would know.

Her case is just special because she's stuck in the UK seemingly. But the restriction is on US flights so Disney will probs fly her to Mexico and drive her over

Black Panther is a bit more important than Mighty Ducks D+ show. And they likely started shooting before vaccine mandates came down. They're not going to fire and recast one of the main actors in their film unless they have no other options. It's not even so much cost as it is scheduling.

Just make her into a CG character. 95% of the movie will be green screen and CG, anyways.
Alternatively, have her film all her remaining scenes from home against a green screen, and then copy paste her into the film in post.
That would make the film way more entertaining to watch for me.

Marvel and Fiege has to make choices to ship their movie products and they have some limits on decisions they can or cannot make some harder limits than others.

In the case of Black Panther Chadwick was not diagnosed with cancer until 2016, 2 years after he was cast and had already completed work on Civil War. Fiege may not have known, as Boseman kept the information quite private. Had Boseman not passed, perhaps Leticia would have been recast, perhaps not, it would have depended on her actions being an impact to production. Paltrows Goop for example seems to have not been a show stopper, but Paltrow also carefully avoids making statements too out there.

As it stands, Boseman passed and Marvel made the call to not recast T'Challa. This may have been a mistake in hindsight, but once their decision was made its locks in their planning for at least a while. Leticia causing trouble on the set (if it happened as she seems to be denying it), means they have to decide if they find a way to finish, or redo the movie. Neither is ideal, but one is much MUCH cheaper.

Ideally you would find out potentially problematic issues in advance (Marvel thought long and hard about RDJ), but who would have been scanning cast members for "new vaccine" anti-vaccine nonsense prior to 2020.

Yeah, I really can't blame Feige for initially going all in on Letitia (whether they should've just replaced Chadwick is a whole other thread worth of discussion) since all that happened in the early days of the pandemic. But the past year once the vaccine began to actually roll out has really exposed who all the fucking losers and nutjobs who were out there, whereas before you might never have noticed them.
