Stewart seems like he'll lean far heavier into righteous indignation vs the humor of Oliver. Plus an hour long deep dive into certain subjects from his PoV sounds mighty interesting to me.

I think the viewership is going to be really limited with a 1 hour format, especially for a single-issue. I don't think this format will last for long.

Love Jon Stewart, good for Apple. Not sure why some people here are negative about this, but ok, I'm excited.

cool and i'll watch but i have internally debated if these shows actually motivate a call to action or just end up pacifying the masses

Him doing Jon Oliver shit is preferable to more Daily Show, at least.

Still, undermining faith in government is the prime play in the Republican playbook and I fail to see how his brand of cynicism doesn't play into that.

What the what?

How is this not great news? Jesus. Stewart was an institution, and while he bailed out at the "wrong time", for sure, I'm glad he's back. I also like the idea of going long form. Oliver's stuff is great, but the schtick is getting a bit old. It's good reporting, but no one really pulls off righteous, exhausted anger and grief like Jon did. I'm hyped as hell. Regardless of who wins the election, this could be a great project.

I hate to be that guy but the people who always moan about long segments on shows like last week tonight seem to miss the point a little, it's exactly because a lot of people, mostly Americans in last week tonights case, don't know enough about what exactly is going on in the world or their own country, and only hear snippets here and there that often they don't understand the sheer horror of what is being done in their names by their government or the companies they support etc, honestly I can't wait for this show and I still watch last week tonight every week, never had a problem watching a segment on last week fully because even if you don't like the jokes they are only there because they know people don't want to actually bother to sit down and learn what the fuck is going on fully so they can truly understand, it's a shame that somehow being fully informed so you can try and help others as well as yourself understand stuff that's a big fucking deal is such a problem for so many but it's sadly the same everywhere these days, no one wants to devote time to one thing seemingly based on how often people are watching movies or TV and on their phones at the same time, and yeah thats maybe old man yelling at clouds talk but sadly in a lot of countries if people actually spent time finding out about stuff, a lot of the issues that have happened may not have happened in the last decade, from brexit to trump etc it all is because so many are ignorant to the full picture or facts.

Sorry if that sounds harsh to some folks but if you can't stand an hour devoted to one subject to fully understand why it's an issue then just don't watch the show. We need more people to push for better knowledge not less just to keep ratings up.

Do we really need more of these shows that diminish the horrible acts of certain people into jokes? I can't stomach more in the current hellscape.
It's absurd to say that comedy that shines a light on these horrible acts is diminishing. Humor has its rightful place in times like this and studies have shown that people (in the US at least) who watch shows like The Daily Show tend to be well informed. If you can't stomach anymore, don't watch these shows.

Fuck yeah. Wish he came back earlier though. But there is still a lot to cover. A Democratic trifecta is not a guarantee and GOP shenanigans won't stop anytime soon.

I've fallen off so hard on these kinds of shows, it's easier for me that it's on Apple since i can just say i don't have the service when everyone and their chickens asks why i don't i watch this??

He held Fox News in check, sort of, which is missed. That timing though.

The show starts in 2021. He left TDS in 2015... I wonder if him being off-air was contractual, seeing as Comedy Central was all up on Colbert from even hinting at any of his past characters on the late show..

Nevertheless, excited to have him back on TV..

Also, didn't Stewart have a multifaceted deal with HBO at some point? Really surprised whatever he is doing is going to Apple.

Honestly, wish his show could just replace Maher so that POS can fuck off to irrelevancy.

Right. Jon Stewart had good politics for the Bush era and I basically owe my entire political identity to him, but I'm not sure if he's the best fit for the situation we find ourselves in now.

Same. I'm a socialist thanks in large part to him, but I think the time has passed. I was perfectly happy with this as his parting gift to American politics.

If he's going to bring back that "both sides" energy then he can stay off the air.
There were always two things that grated on me about Jon. One was the constant copping out in terms of owning up to what his show was really doing, which was being a satirical political advocacy vessel(often when he needed to take things a step further would step back and say, listen, it's not my job to be x or y even though I identify every day how desperately people need x or y and people look to me for it), and two, which I think is an extension of that to some extent, bending over backwards to shit on the left to appear like his curmudgeon outlook wasn't partisan. Which I think at times did create a net effect of depressing participation because it was always about how worthless Democrats were and how bad Republicans are.

That all said, people are crazy that say we don't need him. There are how many dozen copycats? And not a one has managed to generate the sort of broad generational appeal that Stewart does. Or provide the sort of biting wit and ability to just eviscerate political opponents into the ground.

Think about it, we probably wouldn't have Tucker rising up today if Stewart was still around to put his boot on his neck.

His recent movie looked awful mostly because it felt like it was made a decade ago. I'm not sure he can tackle how absurd reality has become.

Stewart sucks. I've despised him since the godawful Rally To Restore Sanity.

His toothless both sides shit should stay in the past where it belongs.

I think you're overestimating his influence. During Stewart's tenure George W. Bush was elected and re-elected. The Republicans took back the House and Senate. And, Donald Trump was elected.

Also, he stomped on Tucker's neck before and he still came back stronger than ever.

i don't think I am.

Im not saying he single-handedly influenced the zeitgeist, but he has been more influential than any of his successors, spiritual or direct. And it's not really close(hell, pretty much every news satire show and host owes itself to the assembly line he built). And no one has really been able to replicate the strengths as a satirist that he had.

As for Tucker, I think that is the sort of thing that was lost with Stewart, someone that took on directly the right wing echo chamber and was actually capable of getting results. We will of course never know, but I don't think in a world where Stewart carried on into the Trump era that Tucker rises back up the way he did.
