the comic wasn't about this specifically as how it applies to society at large

I accidentally hit post before I had finished my post since I'm on mobile but edited it right away to make clear I'm in no way defending the vile place that is 8chan nor the decision to host an AMA there

Do you think a PR director who causes one of the biggest PR fiascos in recent video game history should keep their job?

It doesn't even matter if he knew about 8chan. If he didn't that is insanely incompetent regardless.

This doesn't really work when you're a brand that depends on external deals and partners and one of them is a kid's tv network.

Like I said earlier, me thinking this was purposefully orchestrated doesn't mean I think it was smart or good strategy.

The gambit rests on how the non-apology goes, and how quickyl they can bury this news.

Is it an overreaction if I'm overwhelmed with a plethora of emotions which leads me to never want to purchase another THQ nordic game again?
No, it's not. I'm in the same place.

I feel terrible for Gunfire, and a bit gross that I also kind of feel like maybe I should have bought Darksiders III earlier (because now I never will). But this shit is indefensible. These people don't deserve our business.

Wow, I expected more out of this for how many hottakes I've seen.

I wonder if this would have blown up as much if they went to 4chan rather than 8chan. Because the comments I've seen posted are no worse than ones I've seen in 4chan and I kinda expected worse. Now I didn't really know about the history of that place which seems even more lawless than 4chan. Still I found the apology to be adequate compared to some other PR apologies I've seen.

Maybe that particular guy should loose his job title (I'm the ones involved are going to be disciplined in some way internally), but for some of the takes I've seen and the calls for boycotts from others I expected much worse than an AMA taken in a shitty setting trying to walk about/appease pretty scummy individuals. Maybe twitter comments and Era page #'s paint a skewed picture of how large a controversy actually is.

It's hosting an AMA on a child pornography website. And no, 4chan is not as bad as 8chan.

it's not just here on ResetERA, that's pretty much what happens over most anything in society these days

53155012_10156964736208764_1283351664157261824_n.jpg

8chan is awful and deserves to be burned down but they aren't well known so it's entirely plausible that PR didn't realize

now if they did know then they deserve to be fired and frankly companies should just stick to Reddit for AMAs
I find it very, very hard to believe they didn't realize. What PR team in their right mind does an AMA on a website without doing their due diligence and making sure it won't get them bad PR? That's literally their job.

They are actively engaging with a website that facilitates child pornography. If that's not controversial to you then what is?

This sounds like it was done on purpose. Any normal interview about THQ would have gone under most people's radars, yet here we are talking about this one.

Suddenly THQ and Darksiders has been on all of my social medias. That's PR and Marketing for you, and outrage works wonders. I really don't think for a second that this was just a lack of "due diligence".

Call it a reverse woke brand or whatever but there is going to be fallout, the industry people seem to be agog over this, and rightfully so.

Honestly. We have a company where both the head of PR and Marketing, and also a member of the board of directors and arguably the most powerful public facing person at the company both are publicly signal boosting a website focused on child pornography and nazism. They are also engaging with it.

At what point do we get "official request to add them onto the Era banlist" territory.

50 pages, come on, I think this is a massive overreaction, guys. I understand that 8chan is a shithole and this was the stupidest idea ever, but these are still people with a limited perspective of what's going on in the gaming community and on the internet. It is the job of the PR and Marketing Director to prevent these kinds of disasters, so I think it is appropriate to fire him, but I don't think Pollice should be fired because of his participation. Doing AMAs isn't why he was hired, and he was only answering questions in relation to actual development and M&A.

Of course they need to focus on damage control now, and not make stupid mistakes like these in the future, but I think it's very childish to boycott a company because of the decision of one person within a company of literally a thousand people. If that one person wasn't there, they wouldn't have had this disaster, so if they'll fire him, they have done everything they can do about this situation, and can't do anything but try to prevent it in the future. A boycott doesn't help if it isn't to change a strategical point of view, such as certain monetisation methods, developing multiple games exclusively for certain platforms, etc. This was the decision of just one guy. If he's gone from the company, what is your boycott even useful for?

edit: I originally said "but I can't really blame Reinhard Pollice for his participation." I've edited this, because obviously we can. I don't think he should be fired over it tho.

Ok, time for real talk.

If anyone thinks this was just a "stupid mistake", then you're getting had.

This was 100% an attempt to signal boost to a specific audience in order to gain a loyal following that sees "a company who openly admits to rejecting SJW censorship".

They can backpedal, but just like when Trump back peddled after a nazi rammed his car into a crowd, the white nationalists saw what he said and openly admitted that the back pedal was just to cover his tracks, while embracing his "both sides" speech as an open invitation and admission he was on their side.
The "SJW" comment is a huge red flag. You don't make comments like that, and then try to defend those comments, if it's a mistake

Its pretty disappointing knowing a company you supported in the past held views like this. Now im questioning the influence it had on games like Darksiders, (which i love) How can i know in the future they won't try to sneak in their terrible views on games? Unless these people are fired i wont support this company any longer.

Man I never want to ever hear another white privilege doesn't exist argument ever again. Knowingly associating an entire company with a white supremacist and child porno website and still not fired is some kind is some craaaaaaazy shit.
I never want to hear anyone say it's OK for businesses to fire their low level workers just because "it's business."

Dudes over here burning through money and goodwill and jack shit has happened to him.

I mean, it takes literally 1 google search and about 3 minutes to find out everything you need to know about 8chan, if the PR didn't know then they still deserve to be fired, maybe not for moral reasons but because they're quite simply awful at their jobs.

oh for sure the people responsible for this are gonna be put of jobs and rightfully so

That's a fair point, but it's been only a few hours since this incident occurred. How was Microsoft (or whoever) to know beforehand that THQ was run by awful people if they never aired these sentiments before publically?
Well, now they do.
We've seen contracts lost for less.
Heck MSFT and Ori's dev haven't even made the partnership official so there's plenty of time for them to put a bow on it.

I'd love to see all of these apologists willingly post on 8chan and then publicize it to their bosses that they interacted with an imageboard known for hosting child pornography. See how well it goes.

A corporation endorsing a site known for child pornography is not normal. In this case, "much worse" would've been the FBI knocking your door in.

Did I thing I find the most fascinating out of all of this: what did they THINK was going to happen?

Like, I assume these people had to have some degree of knowledge on business or marketing to get the positions they got. How closed off from the world do you have to be to think that you would pull off a stunt like this and NOT suffer major blowback?

This is a whole office filled with guys in suits and they all collectively thought "Yes, this is a good idea and it won't utterly destroy us"????

This is not something that you can walk back from, considering the reasons why 8chan is an awful place are plastered all over the fucking site.

Like, do you think someone can walk back from hosting an AMA on Stormfront? It's not like this shit takes more than a minute of research before you go "ya, that's probably not a good idea".

I'd love for the people to saying it's just an overblown mistake to explain how they're reasoning that when we've seen the kinds of replies that were being made, people who were involved, and attempts to defend and double-down after being asked about their intent.

This wasn't an errant tweet from a solo PR person.

They have an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to them and it's the first result when you search 8chan on Google. Most of the vile stuff about 8chan comes up when you just search 8chan on google. It's not even hard to do research on it, in fact it's brain dead easy.
