Just curious if people like the Oculus Quest, and if they think it's worth it. I haven't seen it talked about much.

I'm considering getting one this holiday season. I've only had experience with the HTC Vive, and the idea of a wireless VR experience really interests me. It's also got Beat Saber and Vader Immortal, which is great. It doesn't seem to have a ton of games - which is ok, I've got an insane backlog anyway - but it does seem a little concerning that there's not a real killer app yet.

I have gotten nauseous with the Vive, so not sure if that's something to consider with the Quest. I also wonder if the Quest being a solely single-player experience would hurt my overall enjoyment. Some of the fun from the Vive has been getting to see what the player sees on the computer screen. With the Quest, watching someone play VR is much less interesting, right?

And lastly, is a better Oculus upgrade expected to come out next year or any time soon? Would hate to drop a couple hundred only for a better version to be right around the corner.

If you want to play VR games, this is it. This is the one thing you should have.
I can not state how amazing roomscale without cables is.
That being said, my headset does still collect dust but everytime I use it, I'm still wowed.

In November, you'll be able to tether it to a VR capable PC and enjoy the entire Rift and Steam VR library. That added to its stand-alone, six degrees of freedom ability make it the easy choice in VR headsets.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Quest has the ability to cast to another device. I'm not sure how else people would be able to capture footage of it.

Also something to consider, they seem to be clamping down on sideloaded mods which means it's losing custom song support in Beat Saber unless you keep the game from updating past a certain point. Could probably get around this if you have it on PC and use the tether though.

Oculus Quest is a fantastic little VR headset and i recommend it to everyone. It's the headset i let family/friends play over my CV1, Rift S and Index. I wouldn't buy a Quest or sell the Rift S over hand tracking/oculus link especially at the state they were at OC6 because although i was impressed at some of what it could potentially do the execution on both were eh.

If you or anyone does by a quest i recommend getting high capacity AA rechargeable batteries, a nice anker battery because the quest doesn't have a very long battery life and it's a good counter-weight since the front is so heavy. Also, VR covers.

Yeah you can cast to any Google enabled device.

I hear it's awesome but I am holding out for the next generation of VR headsets.

Being completely wireless is huge, but I'm holding out for a boost in graphics and resolution and perhaps a smaller, more comfortable form factor.

I absolutely love mine...when I'm not having issues with it. Got mine on launch day and I'm waiting for my 3rd replacement to come in : (
However, don't let that deter you. Most of my friends who bought one never had any problems.

It's incredibly immersive and every update keeps making it better. As the previous poster said, the immersiveness of untethered roomscale games cannot be understated. I don't recall being wowed as much as my first time playing SuperHOT VR on the Quest. The library for the Quest itself is a BIT thin but with the compatibility of GO and Rift games coming very soon, the number of titles will expand the library significantly. As for killer apps, Beat saber is the only one I can think of besides SuperHot or Robo Recall.

I don't know if you're wearing glasses, but if you do, I recommend getting prescription lens adaptors (WidmoVR). They were a godsend to me as even with the spacer and my relatively small glasses, I still managed to scratch the Oculus's lenses. Now I can play without my glasses and very easily pop them off to let others try it.

As for a Quest upgrade, there was an Oculus event a week or two ago and nothing was announced as far a successors go.

finally, for watching poeple play, you can stream to your phone but a Chromecast enables you to stream it to a TV.

If you go for it, enjoy!

Been living without a PC house sitting for the parents.

Also thinking of getting this to exercise a bit during the winter months. How's the battery life / charge time ?

It's great! I mostly use to stream games from my PC which works pretty well, but you do need a solid connection to do it though.

I love it, but it's unusable inside my home. EDIT: only talking about games here
I've only even tried stationary guardian at home, and that is still a complete no-go. The first night I had it I hit my head so hard that the headset left a bruise on my face. I also hit a controller so hard that I was surprised it didn't shatter.
The last place I used it was in a dimly-lit corner of a Navy supply warehouse parking lot.

It's a cool piece of tech whose biggest problem is the proprietary nature of the Oculus ecosystem.

It's worth noting that the Quest can, in fact, stream to a separate TV; I've highly enjoyed watching a friend smash his way through Superhot VR this way. However, the streaming quality was really poor, and I'm not sure if it's improved since launch. Bad image quality is one thing, but it would also frequently cut out and/or drop frames a ton, and occasionally disconnect altogether.

Oh wow, hearing a lot of positivity! Which is awesome - the reviews online are pretty great. I just feel like I never see it talked about much. Definitely glad to know it can be streamed to other devices. I won't say it was a deal-breaker, but it would have given me serious pause.

How is the audio on it? The pics/video don't seem to have headphones - does it just stream from the visor?

Audio is kinda aimed at you ears but it sounds good.

If you're gonna get one headset, this should be it. Especially with Link being implemented in November.

I just got one and its really fun so far. I got it because I saw that Oculus Link is coming in November which will allow you to tether it to a PC and access all Oculus RIft games so you get the mobility but also the option of tethering to a PC for those extra resources. Best of both worlds imo.

Don't own one but I've seen VR enthusiasts (who have their proverbial VR legs) say that a small set of games (a notable one is the Star Wars one) chug so bad that it makes them physically sick just moving their head. Although most other games have been properly ported and run smooth.

It will get an update to run games off a PC though so it's still a good entry point.

Edited to change "many" to a "small set" to avoid further confusion or otherwise misrepresent the product.

I have only heard good things about it. I have the Rift S and absolutely love it. If I didn't have a powerful PC I would have gotten a Quest for sure.

That's the first I've heard of this but I may not be playing the right games. I get motion sickness in PSVR all the time because of the wobble it has but I don't get sick at all with the Quest. The Quest tracking is that good. It's also amazing how you take the freedom the Quest gives you for granted until you go back to something tethered like PSVR.

Well the issue doesn't seem to be the tracking (which has been said to be astounding for an inside-out set) but just the hardware can't handle certain games without dipping to unnaceptably (for VR) low framerate.

Never heard of this, I am an enthusiast who has owned a couple PC VR headsets and a PSVR, and follow some VR Reddit pages. None of the games "chug", in fact it's one of Oculus' requirements for a game to be allowed onto the app store that it maintain a high framerate. Worst I've seen is in Beat Saber if you don't turn down the effects before playing the hardest difficulty songs the framerate can sometimes drop a bit. Not enough to make you sick, but enough to make it harder to do well.

Yeah, this has actually dissuaded me from buying one, partially at least. It just seems like a gimmick that people dont keep talking about, like we do non VR games.

there's a quest thread here and it's rarely bumped.

I've owned every major VR headset and I'm very susceptible to VR sickness, and I've never had that issue with the Quest. Even with Vader Immortal.

Where have you seen people saying they've had issues with framerate?

This. I was going to get one after they announced the PC Link, but coming from PSVR, the Quest was insanely heavy and uncomfortable. The lack of tether didn't make it worth have all that weight pushing into my eyes.

Here's an example of what I"m talking about. He had to stop the game because it was making him physically sick and the framerate is chugging noticeably in the video.

As stated previously I don't own one of these (my VR headset is a first gen Vive) so I have no personal point of reference this is pure hearsay.

I use my Rift S near enough every other day, it's great. I've also got a Quest and to be honest, it's a lot more freeing and fun than the S (at times).

Such a simple setup and having no wires is truly fantastic. Playing SUPERHOT VR whilst not being tethered is a great experience.

I bought one recently and I'm loving using it. Being able to set it up anywhere in minutes is a huge bonus when you're interested in showing it off to friends and family.

The only downside I would say is that, currently, there's not a whole lot of meaningful content on the Quest store.

I think it's fantastic! There are some good optional accessories too. I never found it too heavy. I have a great space to play in for limited movement, and a garage that's large and open if I don't have a car in it for room scale. I always thought I'd never play room scale games ... But good VR went wireless, so now I can go out there if I really want to. (I'll do that for something really physical like super hot, and played a bit of Red Matter that way).

The audio that comes baked in is great. If you're an audiophile, you'll have to use wired headphones ... But then there are wires. I've seen people rig up something to keep the loose wires from hanging down though. But honestly, I like that I can still hear stuff happening in the real world, and the exterior cameras prevent me from being totally cut off.

All in all, it's the best VR headset IMO. No wires just makes the barrier to actually use it so much lower, and that was the biggest issue for me with other headsets. Just felt like a lot of effort to get plugged in and going for a non-enthusiast like myself. (I only ever owned a PSVR otherwise, for context).

Linus was having problems because he kept moving out of the Vader Immortal bounds causing it to black out the screen and then go back in in mid-motion in a high place, that game is optimized in a special (annoying) way that forces you to stay still at certain places, it only has the environment rendered for like a little room around your head. No other game on the headset does that. It wasn't chugging, it was just doing things that made him sick.

Can anyone who has had one from launch tell us here what the post launch software pipeline has been like?

Plus any for Quest specialist YouTube channels?

The best VR headset available with a fairly strong library that is improving all the time. If you have the cash and even a mild interest in VR, it's the way to go.

I don't know why I need to defend this point but he specifically mentions the light saber stuttering, he talks in the next game how you can tell its optimized because "it runs smooth", and you can see the framerate chugging in the video. They also mentioned stuttering performance when he's playing superhot.

Is there a way to watch VR YouTube videos in the quest without a pc?
Yup! There's a native YouTube app!

Also I've had this for 2 weeks and it has blown me away. I just did that ISS space station one and it was super immersive. Beat Saber is fucking killer. VR pokerstars has me enjoying the hell out of it while chatting up people. All the chat apps are interesting. I played Rec Room with a buddy of mine and had a blast. The audio to me is great, being in a party with my friend at times I just thought he was in the same room.

There is also a bunch of badass games coming.

Also the refund policy is legit, 2 hours and less of play time and you can refund it so you can pretty much try anything if your worried how it will play.

Edit - Also forgot to mention I watched media using Amazon player, Netflix, and YouTube. It's really fantastic watching The Expanse in my own personal movie theater.

Love mine. Such an impressive piece of hardware. The feeling of freedom in VR makes going back to wired hard. Software library is still pretty thin but it's still a new console and I'm hoping more ports of mainline vR games plus new software is on the way.

robo recall is incredibly impressive graphically.

I have a Quest and it makes using my PSVR seem like a wire filled hassle. Althought PSVR has better games and the games have better scope the fact that it takes so long to set up especially if I am demoing it at someone elses house makes me not want to use it, especially after getting the Quest. Starting up the Quest and getting everything set up and being in game takes about 3 mins max. I play it at work almost every day during lunch with no issues.

Had mine since yesterday.

I had the Rift CV1 and a PSVR.

First thing I've noticed is that the Quest feels lighter and more comfortable on my head and face.

Plus having no external cameras looking for the headset works wonders, haven't had any tracking issues. (Which I did with others).

Being able to see through the headset with the built in camera and trace your play area is genius.

As much fun as I had with Rift 1 and PSVR, it always have the odd tracking issue, sync problem or I would feel the cables as I tried to move around.

Wireless is amazing. Spinning around with the dancing demo, looking to the side and back in Superhot and not getting tangled. So good!

The resolution and refresh rate seems fine.

Haven't seen any PS4 level graphics obviously as this is pretty much a mobile phone but the immersion is so much better without the cables.

The controllers are on another level as well compared to the Move wands.

Loving the Quest. Will try some more games and also some 3d movies hopefully.

I have a few headsets and I would recommend the quest without hesitation to enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. I don't think I can do that for any of the other headsets on the market. The price point is great considering you're getting a portable and a PC headset. You're also getting a lot of forward thinking features such as hand/finger tracking. It's portable/PC powered and has hand tracking coming. Those are three things that other headsets aren't really offering in combination, let alone at that price point.

This all being said I have not yet experienced the Oculus Link and am going off of impressions.

The Quest is the headset I would recommend to everyone right now, especially now that you'll be able to tether it PC and play desktop VR games.

I have the Rift, had a Vive, and now the Quest and the Quest gets the most use due to it being completely wireless. It's super quick to get into VR by just putting it on VS having to get everything running on PC before I can do anything. Plus being portable you can play anywhere, even in your backyard if it's dusk.
