a lot of landmarks/tourist sites are integral parts of many german cities and not even possible to avoid them, especially the areas that are part of the Altstadt of many cities

in Hamburg I used to pass through Speicherstadt (city of warehouses) often because one of our offices were located in HafenCity : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speicherstadt

The entire old city centre of Lübeck the capital of the once Hanseatic League, is a UNESCO world heritage site for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lübeck

Nope, and tourist suck

Why? Tourists are awesome to have around a city. Loved it when I lived in West LA. I thought it was cool having people from all around, around.

Are some tourists shitty individuals? Yup, and they are shitty individuals when they are back home as well. I don't think you can help it.

Imo, of course.

I'd visited most of the landmarks in London in my youth, yeah. I love Tower Bridge to this day.
I haven't done a lot of the stuff you pay for though like the Tower of London.

This is just absurd to me. So none of these are worth going to? Hollywood Bowl, The Fonda, the goddamn palladium, El Capitan Theater, Chinese Theater, Amoeba, Hollywood Cemetery, Roosevelt Hotel Pool, Yamashiro, Magic Castle, endless dive bars, Runyon Canyon, great food and nightlife on Cahuenga, The Academy for DJ sets, Star Wars bar, rooftops (Mama Shelter, Dream, etc), open mics and just general weird shit to experience (black rabbit rose, that sex leather bar), speak easies like sunset and vinyl and no vacancy. Davey Wayne's for a night out.
It's an interesting question, as someone who was in LA for a decade and attended a lot of live music, very little of it was in Hollywood with the exception of the Fonda and the Palladium, and the House of Blues once (thankfully). The general pretentiousness of Hollywood itself gave it a heavy exclusionary vibe that I didn't really enjoy, parking was a nightmare, etc. I don't really think of Hollywood itself as a *place* I'd like to spend time, it's more a place I had to go to in order to see Sleater Kinney or Unwound or the Roots. Similar with downtown and say, the Mayan, it's a destination, not a neighborhood I want to hang out in. That said, for the purposes of the thread, yes, there are reasons to go to "landmarks" in Hollywood.

Born and and live in NYC most of my life, I never been to any of the famous landmarks NYC is known for. Time Square and Central park probably being the only ones that I have been to I would consider world famous but I would not say I went there to visit the place specifically but just happen to pass by or meet up with friends around there. I know I have been to museums as a kid but hell do I know which ones they were.

Even the Bronx Zoo, seems like most kids that go to school here may have visited it at least once but somehow I missed the one opportunity I had to go in elementary school.

I have been to some of the famous parks, expect for many in boroughs like Queens, SI, and the Bronx.

I do want to make a point to visit Stonewall Inn and other places of cultural influences related to civil rights, Harlem, LGBT+

If I'm going into one of the shopping centres in the city (the one next to it, actually), depending on which way I'm coming in from, it's hard not to miss this.

I just find this fascinating as hollywood and downtown I would view as the most vibrant and interesting neighborhoods of broader LA. Especially for music scene, where else would you see a show? Silver lake?

Born and raised in Dublin, I've been to the Guinness factory well over 100 times, I live nearby and there used to be an easy way to get in without paying so we used to duck in, have a few pints and watch the football (back when they had TV's that showed sport) in one of the bars. Great views, great Guinness, lots of foreigners to chat with, what's not to love?

I was in LA from 1999 to 2008 so things have changed a bit, especially downtown--I used to spend a lot of time in the Arts District for instance and I can assure you it is now nothing like it was back then. Silverlake was just coming up, Echo Park was pre-gentrification, etc.

I used to go to the Troubadour a bit (Breeders), the Wiltern (Morrissey), the Greek (Pixies) and the Roxy as well. Those bands probably peg my age pretty well :).

A lot of really nice places to visit in Germany, from towns to cities. Tübingen is a must
oh man I love Lübeck. :)
Same, I think Lübeck and Heidelberg are the two most awesome "small" cities in Germany. I was born in Rostock but mostly grew up in Flensburg (another two baltic and hanseatic cities for those outside of germany), but Lübeck has always been the GOAT of our baltic cities

I've never been to the Roman Baths, despite growing up nearby and now living here for over 13 years. I somehow never went on a school trip there, that's the real shock

Born and raised in Memphis and while its a local joke that locals have never been to Graceland I actually went there on a field trip in elementary school, and I have since taken a couple of visiting friends. Its fine if you are into Elvis, my best friend likes Elvis but is a fan in the type of way where she acknowledges how much of a flawed human being he was and was into the place but was constantly pointing out how santized it was and telling me interesting things about him that Graceland didn't want to tell us about, which made it way more interesting.

Philadelphia.
Art Museum / Franklin Institute have exhibits I want to see every now and then. School trips were the last time I saw others.
Pats / Genos suck.
Eat lunch at the park behind Independence Hall but I've never been in.
Haven't seen the Liberty Bell in about 25 years even though it's also in that area.

DC area. The museums and such were a regular part of school field trips, so saw some but never really appreciated how POWERFUL many of them were til I was an adult and moved away. Like DC is such a constant presence on TV and elsewhere that you come to forget the level of power, influence, and history there.

I intend to go and visit several memorials I haven't been to. For all my conflicted feelings about the country I cannot deny those that died in WW2 or the Civil War did not do so for nothing and deserve my respect.

Everyone who comes to miami goes to downtown / The Beach / Wynwood but all the locals know these places are awful lmao. Most locals go to cult classic places like in Hialeah or Kendall nowadays.

I haven't had someone ask me to go to Downtown miami in years at this point, and I don't think I'd like to.
Whenever I tell someone I grew up in Miami, they imagine I lived in or spent my time in South Beach... I should just say Kendall at this point.

Wynwood didn't become a hip neighborhood until I moved away.

I didn't visit the local Unesco world heritage site until I was 34 and had not lived in the town I grew up in for 16 years.

I never went to Alcatraz. Just never seemed interesting to me, and I know they do the whole "maybe there is a ghost!" thing which seems so comically stupid. I did go to angel islaand a few times, I love that place.

Now I'm in LA and I don't do touristy stuff exactly, but between movies, comedy shows, and bars, I end up on the Walk of Fame constantly. Also, the closest place to get a real hike in is where the Hollywood sign is lmao.

Lived in Beijing, Tokyo, New York City, and Washington DC never visited any of the "landmarks" except when family visited. Live in the southwest now about 20 min from a national park and I'm there pretty much every weekend.

...Is that one of those rocks where the Norse supposedly murdered old people, the Ättestupa???
I actually have no idea!
I wouldn´t be surprised if someone was thrown over the edge every now and again.

Also, this thread is clearly about cities, so I can´t read, but it has been used in tourist commercials for Stavanger, the nearest city.

Grew up in New Orleans and NOVA my first 18 years and totally, going to the historic places in both is a must and just part of life for the locals.

Yeah I'm about to just start telling people Kendall because it's hilarious hearing people say "Oh so you go downtown every weekend?" LOL

Aside from school fieldstrips it's a rite of passage for life long San Francisco folks to never go to Alcatraz.

Ish. I'm from a small town in Ohio that holds a large festival each year. I went a few times but most of the time did not. I really regret it but I didn't have the best childhood.

Can't stand the pretentiousness over Hollywood. It's fucking amazing.
Literally all of that requires fighting through a bunch of awful traffic if you aren't lucky to live there so no I'm good. When you live on the south side or east side of the city, it just isn't worth it.

I grew up near San Francisco and didn't visit Alcatraz until I had moved away and came back for a visit. I've never seen Lombard St either.

I think my family took me to all the big sites around when I was a child, but I don't think I've been to a single one since then. The one exception being a semi-famous shopping area I went to because it was the only place I could buy something nearby.

I spent my mid to late teens near New Orleans. We did the tourist stuff when we first moved there, and then would repeat things like the French Quarter when we had guests. Didn't do a swamp tour until we had guests as well.

Born and raised in Sydney, our famous landmarks are the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and of course our famous beaches. All of which I visit regularly, the bridge I go over several times a week as I live next door.

Some places I have been, but not all.

Traffic is worse in Santa Monica and you don't see people saying to avoid that whole area.

And take the red line. Problem solved.

I've lived around Dallas all my life and finally went to Dealy Plaza/the 6th Floor Museum in my 30s.
Also went inside Reunion Tower a few years ago, but I'm not sure if that counts as "very famous".

I wasn't born in Ottawa, but lived here more than half my life. I've definitely done all the touristy stuff here, even toured Parliament.

Except I've never skated on the canal. I literally grew up next to a lake, so the idea of being funneled down a corridor on skates has never appealed to me

Closest I had was the Soaring Eagle Casino in Michigan that I lived like 2 miles from. It was pretty touristy, but nothing super famous or anything. I did go there, but only to play on the DDR machine their arcade had. Once they got rid of it, I never went back.

I've lived 5 mins from downtown Washington DC since 98 and museum-wise have only been to the Air and Space and museum of natural history - when my company rented them out for Christmas parties. Been to the monuments and I like museums but have never felt the urgency to go since they're right here.
