So I got a used copy of Kirby's Return to Dreamland for the Wii. It didn't play (disc not recognized), so I cleaned the lens on my Wii and the disc. Now, even Metroid Trilogy will play (so I doubt its the lens), but Return to Dreamland is still a bust. Is there any way around this, or should I just chalk it up to the used game?
If it's not scratched, maybe it has been lying in the sun. In that case fubar.

So I've been playing Fallout 4 on very hard. I got the molerat disease and the pill icon kinda annoys me the fuck out. My last save file was 5 hours before. Normally, I would reload and do it all over but I have the explosive shotgun on a random scavenger and that makes weighing which one to choose very hard. Is it worth ditching the explosive combat shotgun?

Playing Tomb Raider Reboot for the first time. Is it just me, or is Lara and Sam like totally a thing? Because it sure seems like it.

This is a question about Drakengard 3. With the talk about RPCS3 I was reminded that this game came out and I'm interested in picking up a copy. Possible spoilers for this game but definitely some for the first Nier.

Question:
Is the presence of androids in the game a spoiler? Like, a late game reveal or something. I'm trying to think of where I heard this and I believe it was from a Clemps video for the first Nier that someone on here recommended. This is probably a bit of a weird ask considering Popola and Devola were revealed to be androids at the end of Nier and just...the existence of Nier: Automata in general but this is the thread for stupid questions.

A yes or a no would suffice.

Steam. And controllers.

My two 360 controllers (one wired, one wireless) are the proper 'use these on PC' controllers, they are not by any means the real deal Xbox 360 controllers.

I love them, but they are starting to age and the rubber comes off on my fingers and makes the controller face all grubby and dirty.

So, these days, how easy is it to make GAMES on Steam - not Steam itself - recongnise the fact I have started using a PS4 controller instead?

I'm talking about mods or in-game options that change button prompts (eg MGSV, Batman Arkham Knight, Tomb Raider etc - all recent games design with either current gen console in mind) to that of a PS4 controller.

Or should I just bite the bullet and get an Xbone controller? Do they make 'PC-only' controllers based on the latest Xbox One controller design?

Bonus: What am I going to have to do if I want to use a Switch controller or Wii U Pro Controller natively in some of these games?

As I said, I know Steam/Big Picture lets you customise to your heart's content. I just don't want to mod games for use with my PS4 controller and then have them ban me (eg MGSV, Friday the 13th, Rocket League, games with constant or regular online use).

I will sing at the wedding of whoever can answer and help me out here.

It's game-dependent; some games are quite happy to support the PS4 controller natively, others would perhaps need something along the lines of Joy2Key. I'm playing Zwei:The Arges Adventure at the moment, and that supports the controller natively (but doesn't actually display any button prompts anyway), and Shovel Knight supported it out of the box with full button prompt support.

But those are indie games with a heavy PC focus, things get a bit more complex with games developed with consoles in mind. Again, it's still going to be game-dependent, but it wouldn't surprise me if most just assume only an Xbox controller.

Yerp

I figured as much.

Having multiple systems, the controls are very important. I need to weigh up (literally) my options and go from there.

I got to the snowy mountain area in Okami about a month ago. How much longer do I have to go? Really want to beat this game but I was becoming very bored every time I turned it on.

Yeah I can totally see the service being good for those who want the free games that come with. But I don't think they should attach online multiplayer with that service. Combining the two certainly gives these subscriptions a lot more value. But I am willing to bet that PS+ and XBL gold would not be nearly as popular if online multiplayer was not locked behind them. Most people probably get them to play online multiplayer.
I agree that most people get it to use multiplayer. Do you think there is any correlation however with the rise in PS+ subscribers and Sony's willingness to let drvelopers take their time? It seems they really leaned into that this gen and I tend to believe the added revenue helps that agenda

I'm a little curious about the Spotify app on the quick menu for PS4. It shows up by default on my base PS4 quick menu options but it's not there at all on the PS4 Pro quick menu options for whatever reason. I'd like to have the option for my pro since it's the one I spend most time on and opening up the Spotify app causes whatever game I'm currently running to go into suspend mode while accessing Spotify from the quick menu on my base PS4 doesn't.

Does literally anyone ever invert horizontal camera? I've seen that option in quite a few games (the latest being Ni no Kuni 2), but I've never heard of anyone using it, or demanding it in games that lacked it.

I can understand the logic of vertical camera inversion because inverted players think "tilt stick forward = tilt camera forward" while normal players think "stick moves up = camera looks up". I just can't fathom any logic behind wanting to reverse the horizontal camera though.

Do people actually do use this option?

The logic, for what it's worth, is thinking in the context of the *camera* moving, rather than the player's view moving - because with a player centred on the screen, a camera moving to the right moves the player's viewpoint to the left.

I think I've played games that used that inversion by default in the past, although I don't recall which they were. It's something you can get used to if forced to do so, but yeah, it's often counterintuitive.

Fully inverted = control the placement of the camera around the character.

I think the "definitive experience" or whatever would be to get the DS version, it has the anime cutscenes from the PS1 version without the loading issue, it also adds an extra dungeon and ending.
The anime cutscenes are cool, but otherwise I wouldn't call any of the added content that great so you wouldn't go wrong with the original SNES game either.
PS1 version gets a ton of flax for bad loading times, but it doesn't ruin the game just makes it more annoying, and the android version is about as good as Squenix mobile ports get.

The recent Steam release I haven't personally played, but it's apparently a 0 effort port with a ton of problems, that's really the only version I'd actively tell someone to stay away from.

Alright I have what is probably a stupid question.

I use a wired Xbox 360 controller ("for windows") on my PC. It broke the other day. Can I replace it with just a regular wired 360 controller, and use that little dongle thing at the end of the cord (USB to something)? Or would that not work?

I can't find a place to find a replacement controller, looks like Amazon doesn't seem to sell them anymore... thanks!

Why is falling through the floor (or stepping outside of the intended game world somehow) the most terrifying shit ever to me? It seriously makes me want to just turn off the console out of panic.

Yes. A wired 360 or xbox one controller will work fine.

I got both XB1 and DS4 controllers I want to use wirelessly on my PC.

Which one is the best solution? I hear that the official wireless adapter for the XB1 controller is good because it supports more controllers (something I don't need) but is more expensive than a Bluetooth adapter for my DS4 controllers. Help me out here!

how did Rockstar get away with San Andreas without any major criticism?

I'm not talking about the whole "can't relate" nonsense, but Rockstar did however convey racial stereotypes, but there was never any major criticism of them over this by the gaming community?

So there's this website I vaguely remember but I can't remember the name and I can't find it through Google. I think it was a site to keep track of your games collection (kinda like howlongtobeat, Darkadia, etc. - but I may be wrong, may have been more of a gaming social network or games recommendation type thing or sth) but it was still in closed beta last time I checked it out and I just remembered it now and was curious if it was out of beta and how it turned out. From what I remember, it was being developed by a company that had already created a similar website for music. Anyone know which site I mean?

EDIT: Ah, found it after all. It was GlitchWave: https://glitchwave.com/

Aaand it's still in closed beta LOL.

Because people didn't get offended by every single thing back then. Also because the larger media paid less attention to the games industry.

So, I started playing Blackjack about once a month at a local casino. I understand most of the mechanics (close to 21, doubling down, etc), but a few times now I've apparently made some sort of faux pas. Grizzled gambling vets get angry about me for "ruining the table" when I hit on some random hand.

I assume it has something to do with the dealer having to hit whenever they're under 16, but is that it? It's just likely that if the dealer has 4-5 or something that they would end up busting and me hitting removes a potential 10? It doesn't seem to make sense, cause they always play with like four decks.

Social media was in its infancy back then so very little chance of a snowball effect. Video game consumers leaned pretty young and didn't know any better. Media in general didn't pay as much attention to video games compared to nowadays where they're a mainstream medium.

And of course the obvious "its satire" defense that lives on to this day.

Because people didn't get offended by every single thing back then.

What's with the weird line-breaks in Dark Souls 3 item descriptions?

I don't have the game handy but as a made up example, it's like this:
Bag of Popcorn
Enjoyed by Unkindled and Hollows
around the world. Despite
being easy to prepare, it takes a
Microwave Master to pop every kernel contained in the
bag without burning the rest.

Anyone else notice this? It's all over the place, and considering how lore-intensive and cryptic things are in these games, the way the in-menu descriptions of items only adds to confusion.

I'm thinking of getting a desktop pc but I'm not sure if I'd like to have watercooling or not. Isn't it in danger of spreading liquid all over the hardware?

The risk of leaks is mostly relegated to custom loops. There is no shortage of "all in one" solutions ($100-150) that are more or less idiot proof. That said, water cooling is kind of overkill unless you want to get real into overclocking your CPU as far as it'll go. It's not something I would recommend to a first-time builder. Just get a $30 heatsink (Or if you go the AMD Ryzen route, you don't even need that) and put the saved cash into better hardware.
