you're conflating two things here.
Some person at GOG made a bad joke and was fired.
Some person at CDPR made a transphobic joke and fuck all happened.
This

CDPR didn't do shit about their side, it got swept under the rug. This is why they don't get the benefit of the doubt, and the hands-on demos mentioning all sorts of casual racism is why they don't deserve it.

4) "Chromanticore" is probably a play on words with "chromosomes", although people in the thread are bringing up a few other interpretations depending on how you break down the word (like the mythology of Manticore and the symbology of designing your body to be however you want it to be.)
I think it's more likely to be chrome + manticore in reference to metallic/cybernetic augments and the manticore myth you mentioned.

"Cyberpunk 2077 will contain nudity for a very important reason"

Badowski said that in the final game, his team intends to have full nudity, not for shock value but because it supports one of the most important themes in the cyberpunk genre: transhumanism, the belief that humanity can transcend its current mental and physical form with the help of technology. Throughout Cyberpunk 2077, players will have to grapple with what it means for them personally to become transhuman, and one of the pieces of imagery the team plans to use is nudity.

^^^

This is what I instantly thought of when I saw the image. I don't really trust the developer to handle "transhuman" well though. Based on the stereotypical characters in the game I think the developers are just going to go for shock value when it comes to nudity and try to pass it off as deep.

Okay so that's male genetalia in that pic? Not some trick of the light?

They could have represented an exciting vision of the future and they went with this?

And it's this exact attitude that makes me reluctant. I do my due diligence and read the thread but still struggle to understand the inherent issue many are seeing with the image and just feel by "asking questions"that it instantly vilifies someone.
I mean, you just do it like literally everyone else that isn't being dropped like a fly and are interested in the topic at hand. You read the thread, you relate the questions you have to those posts you have them about and you put in a little more effort than "I don't get it, what's the issue?".

Ah, Bioshock: Infinite. The game that depicts pro-equality revolutionaries jettisoning their morals the second they're in power and immediately trying to murder white children. Uh yeah, "off the rails" is a mild way to put that.
Yeah, but before the plot literally turns into "both sides", it features all the racist imagery to contextualize the world and the behavior of most white people you come across, painting them as incredibly awful people. That game is not without fault for what it did with the later half of the game, but it was doing some good stuff before.

In our culture it's not uncommon to have skin tight clothing over breasts and female genitals. It wouldn't surprise me if in the future it's no big deal for male genitals as well. It's certainly not too far-fetched to imagine culture going that route in our future.

In their (fictional future) culture this may not even cause people to bat an eye. It's like an ad showing a female with skin tight clothing. I think we don't have enough information on the context of this. Could be good, could be bad.

Are people saying this ad can make sense in the game world totally ignoring CDPR's history of un-adressed social problems on purpose?

For people curious, image is sourced from NVIDIA's Ray Tracing announcement:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/cyberpunk-2077-nvidia-partnership-ray-tracing/

I'm not sure if this is CDPR's idea of good representation, but the continual fuck ups is REAL fucking telling
At this point, the collective view seems clear. There have been too many incidents involving them before for me to give them any benefit of the doubt. I didn't play TW3, and I definitely won't play this trash.

On the one hand, I don't expect cdpr to handle this in any sort of interesting way. But the concept I'm not against. The idea of genetic modification making concepts of gender and sexuality fluid and changeable on a whim is an interesting idea to explore. Just not in CDPR's hands.

Come on Boss, I get some of the others but "manticore" is left wholesale in the name and how are you not supposed to relate the word, the imagery and the creature that's a beast made of different creature's parts. Especially with "mix it up" slapped up in there.

Manticore, from my original reading, isn't inherently a bad thing if people can buy a product and choose what type of gender/sex features they want to be presenting, which I'm assuming is the intention considering the adverts picture and "mix it up". Even for CDPR, I highly doubt their usage of the word is stemming from the "beast" aspect of Manticore.

Also, I want a higher rez photo because I'm not convinced it's "Manticore". I originally read it as "Manticure", which has very obvious horrible connotations and would be indefensible.

Which would make sense within the ad how?
It's "chromosomes", "man", "core", with a play on "manticore", I think that's pretty obvious.
No, no it's definitely chrome.
You can tell because of all the chrome and metal prosthetics in the advert.
It definitely isn't about chromosomes because gender and sex aren't featured prominently at all.

There's another ad for the same product right next to the one pictured that has nothing to do with the whole "chromosomes" idea. It's literally just a regular Cyberpunk-looking dude with "Feel the Chemistry" behind him.

EDIT: Disregard this, seems like it's for a different product, though maybe just a different flavour of that same energy drink.

Hmm. ChroManticure....

So... "chroMa" evokes chromasomes

"Manticure" evokes manticore, the mythical beast made of different parts of different animals

And "cure" evokes the perception this is some type of disease or sickness that needs to be remedied

Real subtle there cdpr

the dong is definitely chrome. they just couldn't show it because that would be too dystopian and cyberpunk.

all i learn is that none of you is capable of logic and only latch at anything to attack others and take a moral high ground without ever challenging your close minded ideas.. i'm done with this discussion tho it would be interesting with civilised people

Are you open to the idea that there's validity in being offended by the image? It struck me as a fetishization of a topic that the game hasn't indicated it will be tackling in a more considerate or thoughtful way.

It can make sense, the issue is (as you pointed out) with the context of CDPR/CDP/GOG it's really, really muddy and a horrible look to have our first dive into the intersection of trans-humanism and transgender issues be this, no matter how unintentional it was.

This is highlighting a different kind of problem. CDPR has a history of anti-trans actions. They are also in a country which has not undergone an acceptance/inclusion movement. I think expecting them to be inclusive and understanding is unfortunately out of the question considering their environment. This is the problem. A good portion of the world falls under this category. A category in which the culture itself is bigoted at the root. They will look at us here in the USA and laugh for our inclusive movement and continue about their merry day. So what should we do? I think the answer just simply has to be boycotting and moving on. Raging will just make them go further into bigotism.

I don't want to come off as dismissive or unsympathetic but given this game is about fetish, excess and bodymods was something like this unexpected? I don't see the advert as inherently transphobic but I'm a cisgendered white male so I can't say much for minority groups who are routinely targeted by jokes and attacks.

Yes, absolutely. When I first saw it I thought how great it fits the universe.

That's my feeling aound it too. However I'm a white cis male so I could totally be missing the bigger picture here. I get the whole fetishization angle but wouldn't that be the same if it was a man or a woman in a similar style advert?

I think I'm definitely missing something here.

It would be a cyberpunk world ad referencing augments. That kind of thing is super common in generic cyberpunk media, it's like calling something "neon XXXXXX" without it being about neon.

The product's can shown in the ad also seems to have a chromatic aesthetic.

Yeah, the genre and Cyberpunk 2077 specifically both deal heavily with body modification. So, I'm not quite sure how to feel about this because I don't know what CDPR were thinking with that poster. But given some of their history, I'm not going to give them a whole lot of benefit of the doubt.

same. if there had been no previous issues, i would think: well, let's just see how they handle this in the context of the game/setting; a lot of context can be lost from one in-game screenshot. but yeah, given their insensitive history...

Note the crotch of the person in the enlarged image.

This is really yikes. It might not be so bad when divorced from context of the company's issues with transphobia, but even then it's disheartening to see. It reeks of fetishism. :/

That's kind of where I am, I thought that the poster was kinda cool in a way where like the game takes place in a future where gender fluidity is such a normal thing that it can be featured in advertising. But then I remember it's CDPR and their track record on this topic has been less than stellar.

You're really trying hard to defend all of this, don't you. First of all, I'd love to see those super common examples in the same style, signing towards dicks and transgenderism/vestitism in this way, with a similarly questionable name. I'm sure you see the difference between this and, i don't know, a random "Your arm is stronger with BioTec(TM) ad, no? Shouldn't be hard to find, I guess, if they're this common, even if I couldn't see them in any Cyberpunk rulebooks I own.
Second, you completely ignore the whole framing of CDPR behind this, which is what makes this case more than questionable and pretty darn blatant.

from last E3

Given how much CD Projekt RED is playing up the amount of choice players will have in Cyberpunk 2077, it'd seem a little out of place for their game to overlook gender fluidity. Waypoint had a chance to speak with Cyberpunk 2077 quest designer Patrick Mills for a few minutes at E3 about a variety of subjects, including the character creator's limited options.

"It's too early to say," he said, "but it's definitely something that we've looked at."

Not a yes, but also not a no?

all that racial shit, in the beginning, made me turn off the game and never play it again. It felt like they assumed that all of their players were white people and didn't consider how that imagery would play with others.

The idea of "mix it up" - it reads to me as a casually reductive depiction of transsexuality, either as 'add some male with your female' or 'try some male with your female'.

ITT we bend over backwards and twist our brains into pretzels to explain why, actually you guys, this is a positive depiction, or an intentionally negative depiction meant to invoke in-universe distrust of marketing, or lol outrage culture, or I don't get it why is a woman with a huge dick next to the words "mix it up" problematic you guys I need you to explain this step by step, or what's wrong with my fetish.

We also say these things to the actual trans posters in this thread attempting to explain why they find this questionable, especially in light of CDPR's history with transphobia on social media.

We do this because we want to play the vidja.

Why can't I hold all these 20 post junior accounts going into social topics and instantly dismissing the topic at hand!

Most social topics demonstrate blatant inability to recognize and process information. In this topic in particular, the image under discussion is a POSITIVE image for LGBT but folks with agendas fail to recognize that fact.

Like, there's quite a number of people in the early pages asking questions, and many of them managed to survive. I'm sure you can see which posts get banned or get immediate negative reactions and surmise why it happened. Generally, just don't imply that you are entertaining some still, unreasonable sentiments from weird people. If you're struggling to understand some concepts, actually address some specific things on a poster's explanations instead of like going "can someone explain the problem to me please?"

I get that discussing things in a sensitive topics can be daunting. I personally often choose to just stay silent and observe. But as it stands, you're just doing everybody a disservice by doing the whole "I have a question I'm too afraid to ask" thing. You're still kinda implying that you're dealing with a bunch of silly, unreasonable people, and you don't even get to ask the question!

I'm not so sure when it's met with the bluntness of the image and I don't know how you'd use the word while avoiding it. Appreciate the breakdown though, and yeh – I saw that, "Manticure" in another post and.. let's not go there lol. Need a higher res version of the asset as you say.

Which is why I've been trying to engage in both this thread and the other one. The issue with suggesting this could be some nuanced message on gender or transphobia is that there's little indication to suggest CDPR are capable of handling these topics well, and numerous signs they can't. They are abundantly aware of their past issues with the LGBTQ+ community, and being cognizent of that they're completely capable of putting out any messaging, blog posts, youtube promos or otherwise on "Gender in Cyberpunk 2077". They could quell or reassure the commnuity they've hurt before that these subjects are being handled well, they choose not to.

Instead we get this shitty advert and zero reason to believe that it's telling a message of the subtle nuances of a Cyberpunk future. It's a disposabe cheap joke advert on the side of a level, it's not a character involved in the narrative storyline who can expand upon and detail intent.
