cold storage works just like on PS4 and you can literally unplug your external HDD/SSD from your PS4 and plug and play on your PS5, including save files
So you'll be able to have 3 or 4 games installed at a time. Oof.
BUT I WANNA BE CONCERNED NOOOOOWWW!!!
mark ceny
don't talk to me about a Mark corny gdc presentation. They had plent of time to affirm this and not refer back to some super niche video with time stamps
No, just another notch on the sony concern belt.Kind of weird but ok…
Also, I thought everyone was already holding off because the storage was so outrageously expensive anyway? But now that it's delayed… everyone was going to just jump right into a $200 1TB expansion drive on day one?
He said there wouldn't be a drive that met their requirements, not that if the driver met, that it wouldn't support.

I meant as far as transferring PS5 game data from the internal drive to be stored on the external and then back to the PS5 again. Will help so you don't have to re-download the data..
On the fact that Sony has avoided the subject for months and now it's confirmed that there will not be an option to expand storage at launch.
How is this hard to follow?
I guess you can use a normal drive to plugin and swap games in and out? Saves downloads so at least. So there is a workaround I guess
It almost does, but it's worth noting that the vast majority of games on PS4 are comfortably under 100GB, with at least 90% of those falling under 20GB.Doesn't Call of Duty take up 1/3-1/4 of the storage space? Lmfao
After reading the article it seems the expansion slot will be completely disabled out of the box.
If you don't think that being able to expand storage is a big thing, you're entitled to that opinion, but it doesn't give you the right to call another persons opinion as "hyperbole".
A many other other threads here on ERA have proved lately, it's a pretty important subject for many.
Yes but they're not PCIe
I thought this topic was something bumped from March.
Surprised so many didn't know this.
Considering this thread has at least four people just on the most recent page who have already bought >$200 'certified SSDs' for their PS5, I think it's probably a PSA worth repeating.
Western Digital shows their first PS5 compatible SSD on their press material (update: Nov 5th, Sony confirmed these won’t work at launch)
I do have a PC with a PCIe 4 slot. Hmmmm. I also got an NVMe with an enclosure, but its PCIe 3. For external use. I'm about to be broke before Christmas ....😩 Look, somebody has to get the list started!!! Might as well be the customers. lol.www.resetera.com
We knew in March that there were no drives fast enough but that they would be approving drives in the future. I don't recall him saying categorically that they wouldn't be ready at launch, but maybe he did.I thought this topic was something bumped from March.

Can PS4 BC games be played off of cold storage or do they need to beoved to the main drive? I know PS5 games need to be on the main drive.

Exactly, they need to 100% confirm this now. This seems like the perfect time for Sony to clarify whether PS5 games can be moved temporarily to external storage.
Cerny told us very clearly, 7 months ago:
- Do NOT to buy any SSD until Sony compiled a list of compatible drives
- The list will not make it for "launch day", it will be "a little past that"
- They have samples from manufacturers
- They expect, by year end, drives available will saturate 7GB/s
This.
I would EXPECT that drive to meet spec but you never know.
