From my experience, the devs I have worked with in non gaming capacities do not have an eye for design/think about the little details. It's just get something there or what they think looks good, isn't what actually looks good.
It could also be an oversight where one thing is put in as a first go and then never changed because "who cares".
Not speaking for all devs, but that's what I have experienced a lot of the time. It's not like they don't want things to look nice, but just need to be shown what is better and have the time/care to implement the better solution.

Nice try, Nintendo of America, but that's not the game's icon. That's the website's search icon, the actual game icon is a little more zoomed in.
