Imagine pairing two of the greatest JRPGs ever and have them compete with *anything* else. ^^

Trigger + FFVI as a team alone wins this.

the snes list being Chrono Trigger and Secret of the Stars and Paladin's Quest and 7th Saga might give Cross a better chance

Paladin's Quest rocks and I will hear no badmouthing it. Most underrated SNES RPG IMO.

A SNES vs Genesis/SCD poll might be fun except more people here probably played on the SNES than Genesis or Sega CD. Something like:

The technical showcase - Chrono Trigger vs Lunar: Eternal Blue
The fan favorite - Final Fantasy VI vs Phantasy Star IV
The SRPG - Ogre Battle vs Shining Force 2
The Action/RPG - Illusion of Gaia vs Landstalker (picked Illusion of Gaia because I believe it sold a lot more than Terranigma or Secret of Mana due to the NoA support)

Imo, Trigger, PSIV, SFII, Gaia.

Discontent, I was waiting for this type of thread - all the cards are now on the table. 16-bit VS 32-bit goodness.

No question about it, without hesitation, I voted for Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV, V and VI.

I can't tell if this is saying that Secret of Mana is bad or 7th Saga is good but either way I'm mad.

7th saga is bad imo. The game it's based off (Elnard) is ok, but nothing I'd put on a pedestal. But the localisers made 7th saga almost masochistic by upping monster stats and lowering player level up stats.

Secret of Mana is not in my post though lol

Cross and IX are my favorite games in those series, and I've never been big on IV or V. Easy choice.

CT + Snes FFs will obviously win.

A lot of people on Era (Or internet in general) actually thinks CT and FFVI are objectively the 2 best Jrpgs and that everyone should think the same despite having another as fav.

Still like CT more than CC tho haha but voted on the second option for the PS1 FFs, so it worked to get mine.

Chrono Trigger vs Hollow Knight would probably be the best (or worst) Discontent thread poll for the ultimate high horse fanbase war.
Honestly, I say that FFXIV with the addition of Shadowbringers has surpassed VI and VII in my book, although I put it roughly even with Chrono Trigger now.

EIther way, I am of the group that FFXIV is now the best Final Fantasy Story IMHO.

I should have just kept it Chrono Trigger vs Chrono Cross to see what happens. That gives me an idea...

Do an OST poll.

It's like the only place Cross has a chance.

www.resetera.com

Which game had the better soundtrack: Chrono Trigger or Chrono Cross?

Which of these games do you feel had the better overall soundtrack?

I think Cross would take it again more than likely.

No point in doing it again then but nice result! Even if I don't agree with it lmaooooooooo, nice to see CC getting a win.

Trigger + FFVI as a team alone wins this.

Don't underestimate Zelda.

I thought you were one of the good guys! loljk <3

What are these frigging combo polls what the hell?

What's wrong with combo polls? This ones a bit one sided because Era forgets themselves sometimes but the last one made more sense and was a close fight!

Hard choice.
I went with Trigger, because all 4 of those games are great.
I think VII and IX are the best of all of them, but VIII and Cross are the weakest.

This was tough for me. Chrono Trigger is my favorite game. I really enjoyed Chrono Cross as well (especially the soundtrack). FF4 and FF6 have great parties. As does FF7 and FF9. So it came down to FF5 vs FF8.

5 won because of this guy...

Only because his name is Butz and I, like many, enjoy Butz very much.

Midgar, With Love
Chrono Trigger: 9
FFIV: 7
FFV: 8
FFVI: 9
Total: 33

Chrono Cross: 7
FFVII: 10
FFVIII: 7.5
FFIX: 9
Total: 33.5

The losing option is my winner, by a hair.

I never bumped this thread originally but I think it deserves a bump in light of the (not so) shocking results here:

www.resetera.com

Stronger lineup: SNES Final Fantasy trilogy vs PS1 Final Fantasy trilogy?

Playing through FFV right now thanks to the pixel remaster, it's so much fun but it's so overlooked. I definitely think I prefer the SNES trilogy over the PS1 trilogy, love VII but the other two aren't as good as IV or V or VI imo.

Just look at yourselves, era.

For reference, and because I forgot to put it in the OP, 'The Square Off Pt.1:

www.resetera.com

The Square Off: Chrono Trigger and Xenogears face off against the two most revered games from their signature franchise, Final Fantasy VI and VII.

The idea behind the thread: To determine whether, during their epic run in the 90's, Square reached higher peaks within their main big dog franchise using the two most celebrated games from it, or if they excelled outside of it with these two other games that have a very strong case for being...

Makes absolute sense. The PSX games are no longer burdened by Cross and the SNES ones are no longer buoyed by Trigger. I even kind of foresaw this result in my post here lol:

Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV, V and VI

So one incredible game (CT), one excellent game (V), one good game (VI) and one ok game (IV)

vs

Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX

One excellent game (IX) two very good games (VII, VIII), and one poor game (CC)

Pretty easy win for the SNES lot imo

Chrono Trigger and the SNES FF games have plots that I am actually able to understand whereas I don't have a clue what's going on in the PSX games…

The slightly disingenuous part of this poll is that it's asking for which collection is the best based on the platform but it doesn't account for what games were available for either platform.

I would rather take the lesser Chrono Cross with the better FF titles. While I really love V and VI, IV doesn't hold up for me. And barely any of those touch VII or VIII.

FFV and FFVI are incredible games. The rest is whatever really.
Chrono Cross + FF7 + FF9 is one hell of a run

I agree that pairing it with FF VII and VIII isn't really doing Chrono Cross any favors. But also that it would take a very lopsided choice for Chrono Cross to ever come out as the winner in a poll like this.

Chrono Cross is one of the wildest ideas for a sequel ever and I love it just for how audacious it is. Music, battle systems, secrets etc. all top notch. The only issue I really have with the game is how underutilized a lot of playable characters are, but in some ways it allows a larger focus on the world and various character motivations instead. The ways it hooks into Trigger are so good. Great time and I only played it (and Trigger) for the first time this year.

The PS1 ff games are just the icing on the cake.

Started playing jrpg's during the PS1 era so it's easily Chrono Cross for me. Top 5 favourite.

Should do a Chrono Trigger vs Breath of Fire 3 poll and see what happens.
