Welp, here's hoping we're all in the 40% or so that enjoyed the movie.

I wouldn't use critic ratings as representative of general feelings on the movie. TLJ is over 90% on RT and it's pretty obvious that didn't correlate with how the general public felt.

Whether this is good or a hot mess, I'm definitely seeing it in theaters. Fact that TLJ seems to have been retconned a bit is a good start for me

Movie is under performing in several countries. It looks like under 20m in China for total box office.

Disney has some serious problems in their hands if this movie doesn't do better

The movie literally ends on the kid, no? Some sort of "Welp the good guys are down to like...12 people but hey look this kid has hope!" message I believe. Noooot exactly inspiring confidence here.
Man. I instinctively push against comments like Scorsese's, but between things like this post and the people who argue you can't start or escalate a war in the third part of a trilogy, sometimes I wonder if maybe Marvel's movies really are making folks cinema illiterate.

Your elitism and gatekeeping is appreciated.

Is it weird that this movie getting completely panned makes me more interested in seeing it? lol

cmon guys, lets get back to talking shit about how terrible these new star wars films have all been, minus rogue one.

Can't we at least agree on that...?

Why would Disney have a problem in their hands? Their films made $10B this year at the global BO and even if it underperforms in theaters, SW will sell an insane amount of merchandise. They announced a hiatus for SW films which looks like it's coming at the right time.

the people claiming that JJ had to bring back Palpatine because RJ killed Snoke make no sense to me.
I think it's more like JJ probably had some form of ending in his mind when making these characters, and with such little time he simply used those ideas and taped them to TLJ.

Rogue One is the only Disney-era movie I actually disliked lol

Nah of course not, it will be a good film regardless. The critics were head over heels for TLJ, this movie is the anti TLJ so it's no surprise they are planning the film. If you enjoy your hood guy vs bad guy story you will enjoy this film, the end

If opening weekend is low, it is because the masses didn't care/or know what the hell the story was at this point, which would show if TLJ was the wrong move.

Nah, that ain't Marvel's fault; honestly people don't even understand the subtext in those movies, and those aren't even that subtle lol.

I read the spoilers months in advance
I watched the RT score go low
I still have 0 hours of sleep in me because I went to midnight screening confident that I, someone who has enjoyed all previous 8 films despite their flaws, would find enjoyment.

I am sitting here at work. Realizing the fact that I should've slept through the whole movie and I would've had a better experience.

But you weren't criticizing the quality in the post I quoted. You were stating you didn't get it.

It makes no sense to me because it was badly done symbolism. I GET that it was an attempt at symbolism, fucking obviously. Maybe having some broom wielding kid with a fucking secret decoder ring from Casino Zone is not the best vector for your ending symbolism.

This will be the first SW movie I skip in theaters since TPM and it is only because they brought JJ to erase TLJ. I loved TLJ, absolutely my favorite movie in the series. Bringing someone in just to "course correct" it is total bullshit and destroys my interest in the series.

There are some that enjoyed the movie, but they're drowned out and some people have made known their incredulity that someone could actually enjoy it. Expect to see negativity as far as you can scroll your screen
Yea I'm excited. I like these characters and the story so far and I don't have any head canon going in as to how this will or should end. As long as something isn't completely fucked up or distracting, I expect to enjoy myself. But I will be disappointed if it is really close in story beats to one of the older movies. That was the aspect I liked least about TFA.

Man people wanting more Snoke, like another Palpatine, that's why we can't have nice things. The best thing about TLJ was killing the CG monster and focusing in Kylo and his relationship with Rey. It made it oh so much more interesting than doing another Palpatine, but clearly JJ wasn't having that.

God forbid I found the symbolism badly done.

I'm gonna be honest: I really don't know how anyone read that scene as anything other than an illustration of a point. It wasn't "LOOK AT THIS NEW KID PROTAGONIST", it was "look at what Luke's sacrifice did: it inspired the downtrodden!"

Did you posted detailed thoughts somewhere? If so, PM me. I would be really interested in hearing your thoughts as I think we align quite a bit.

This movie does not erase TLJ at all. Some themes are revisited from another point of view but everything that was said in Ep8 stays true.

all in all I am thankful they did the mandalorian because its the best star wars content we have had since RotS (besides clone wars TV show) and its Disney's best Star Wars content period.

I shitted on Rogue One since seeing it years ago and i still don't find it entertaining really at all. Forgettable characters and absolutely boring until the last 10 minutes which it gets hilariously saved by Darth Vader on space cocaine. But i would rather watch that than any Sequel Trilogy Movie.

BTW Solo is the best star wars movie since disneys take over..........

Maybe its just my memory but how did it show how he was downtrodden and getting hope? All I remember was him lifting some broom with the force. The previous scene would have been more poignant to end on.

But what do I know, I'm a Marvel fan.

I agree with this. JJ could've developed Kylo more and could've turned him into the big evil villain. He completely went to the dark side in TLJ so it would make sense.

Was Broom Boy one of the slave kids Finn and Rose ignored while they were springing all the mini-Last Guardian horses in Monaco?

I don't remember if that's real or a TLJ-induced fever dream I had

But what do I know, I'm a Marvel fan.

The scene started with him playing with toys and imagining Luke facing off against the First Order. He was imagining Luke's fight with Kylo, then picked up his broom with the force when he was done playing because he had to get back to work.

I've generally been pretty negative in my opinions about the new Star Wars movies, but yes, Rogue One is AMAZING, even to the point that it snapped me out of my nostalgia-induced love for the originals. It kind of bums me out that Rogue One leads directly into A New Hope, because I can barely tolerate watching the original trilogy anymore, let alone any other Star Wars movie.
