JJ Abrams has been making plot-poor films fueled only by nostalgia and mystery boxes for more or less his entire cinematic career.
...Why is it only now that critics are hating it?
I'm a bit skeptical because he thinks TLJ shat on the mythos, but I don't think that at all.
So I don't fully trust his opinion.

Oh I agree. But the films are the crown jewel. To see none of them hit as well as they should have will have Disney top brass readying the executioner's axe.
They don't want this negativity to spread to the parts that are working.

I just rewatched TLJ. That's because Luke can't forgive himself for what happened with Ben. It's more about Luke vs. Luke than Luke vs. Ben.

TLJ fans can shit on the Prequels as much as they want but at least the Prequels attempted to expand the Star Wars Universe. Episode 7 and 8 take place across like 1 fucking week. I mean really? and in that 1 week the universe is expanded just about fuck all. Maybe if the Trilogy had actually attempted to take place across a span of time there could have been unique developments etc. In the end you get the End of the Republic 2.0 , Rise of the Empire 2.0 and fall of the Empire 2.0 all in a 1 year period.

This is probably my largest criticism of the ST. There's a new empire stand in, a new repulbic stand in, and none of it matters. The Mandalorian, as schlocky as it can be, is doing serious work in this regard. Things would be way worse without the show going right now.

I'd legit like a "This is what I'd have done, you ingrates" graphic novel trilogy from Lucas.

I'm not but there were some smug af people clapping at me (and others) when we raised an eyebrow at the writer of BvS and JL being announced as the writer of this film.
Coming off the excellent TLJ, I just wanted a solid close to this arc and it sucks that it sounds like that didn't happen...due to wonky WRITING.

That's practically TFA and TLJ from all the info we have about Lucas' preparation of this trilogy.
The Mandarin joke in Iron Man 3. They did a short starting to retcon it ages ago and now he actually exists and will be in Shang Chi.
I personally would be very interested in seeing his take on episodes 7-9. Unfortunately, that's probably not in the cards. Not even as a cartoon or something.
