Hi All,

With the Academy Awards coming up and increasingly looking like a mess I thought I would put together a thread where we vote on the available nominees. This will be limited to just the Best Picture Category, but if the thread is a success we may expand it next year and feel free to express your winners in other important categories (like Cinematography and Editing).

The voting will be using the same methodology as the actual Oscars, with a preferential ballot. Unlike the other Categories, for Best Picture voters are asked to rank all the nominees from best to worst. If no nominee has more than 50% of the first place votes, the film with the least no 1 votes is removed and those voters 2nd choice becomes their number 1. This continues until a film has more than half the first place votes. If you have not seen several of the films (and if you're voting I hope you've seen most of them) just leave them out of your list.

Please follow this simple format, going from favourite (but not neccesarily The Favourite) to least favourite

I will close voting at the end of Saturday 23rd February and try to post the results before the Oscars actually start. Because of this tight turn around I will begin uploading votes before the deadline so after this week (ie after 17th Feb) I cannot promise edits to lists will be accepted.

1: Favourite - The favorite is the Favourite though I don't know if it's the favorite to win. It is my favorite movie of the year.
2: Roma - This one is not The Favourite but it seems is the favorite. I loved the story but isn't something I'm wanting to revisit whereas I've already seen some of these movies multiple times.
3: Vice - Not The Favourite nor the favorite but I liked it quite a lot and I'm really enjoying McKay's style of taking a pretty big story and having fun with it.
4: Black Panther - On art direction alone this is probably top-tier Marvel fun with an outstanding cast. Best Pic isn't going to happen but a nod is nice.
5: A Star is Born - It's a solid movie, but I'll just be brutally honest, we've seen it done, and done better, already. Great performances lift it up.
6: Blackkklansman - I loved this flick, but I think I like the script more than how it's really executed. Still, I wouldn't want any other filmmaker tackling this other than Spike and him putting his stamp on it. Also David Duke is a lil bitch.
7: Green Book - An overall really enjoyable feel good movie with humor and plenty of humanity. That being said, it's not unique enough for me to place it higher and a lot of it feels cliche at this point.
8: Bohemian Rhapsody - Never heard of it. Is it a movie?

1: The Favourite - Machiavellian as all hell, this is easily my favourite film as a twisted mindgame of class warfare, sex, and cruelty.
2: BlackKklansman - It's very on the nose, but Spike Lee doesn't do subtlety. He made a film that is both very funny and very disturbing, that cleverly denies itself an easy sappy ending.
3: Roma - I thought it was a tiny bit empty, but my god this film has some amazing sequences in it. It'll probably win the Oscars and deservedly so.
4: A Star Is Born - Yes it's been done before, but this is the kind of melodrama I eat up with some really clever adaptations to the context of modern pop music
5: Black Panther - These Hamlet-influenced "reclaim the throne" blockbusters get me every time. The art direction and soundtrack are also amazing.
6: Vice - As someone who loved The Big Short, this must be what it was like to people who hated that movie. It's obnoxiously spoonfeeding. The state of American political cinema.
7: Green Book - This is Academy bait at its most cynical, strip-mining every nuance of the original story to tell a story you can watch with your racist Oscar voter uncle and he'll still support.
8: Bohemian Rhapsody - Fuck off
