Is there a better word than 'presence' in the title? My brain isn't wanting to parse what it was intended to say.

Because a particluar part of MS' base was cultivated to be dudebros since day 1. There were more of them during the OGBox and 360 days, but yeah.

Given the disparity in sales and how PS4 is the default console for most, I'd not be surprised if there were a lot of dudebros not even on Xbox anymore.

I mean, which is the default for FIFA and CoD these days?

But what Microsoft announced with Rare is a welcoming start to the lack of storytelling games that Microsoft is missing.

Excuse me?
As much as it looks like Sea of Thieves, the graphic style and art direction, who says this won't be another empty, repetitive "games as a service" title?
Are there more informations now? Because how they announced it with a "magical world" where they want to create a "special" experience, this sounds like anything but a storytelling game, how vague they describe it sounds more alarming than anything.

I think outside of America people moved to PS4 more, especially for Fifa, in America a lot of them still are on Xbox though.

Lol this Xbox and cartoony stuff is hilarious. It don't even bother me since Nintendo has been doing this for decades and got called kiddy all the time. They're more respected for it nowadays.

There's definitely no problem. Microsoft will have more realistic artstyle games. It'll be a combination of both. I can understand some people saying it looked like a similar artstyle of games were shown at the event, even though they're not all MS games.

The only issue I have is too many games have the same cartoonish art style, to the point where a lot of the games shown last night started to blend together.

That being said, Everwild looks incredible.

These people complain about anything MS no matter what. Its the same with that Halo and Gears thread. First it was "MS has no games" and now the goalpost has moved to "MS has no 3rd person realistic looking game"

For some people this is the case. They will never Be Happy, no matter what MS does.

But i have to say that i like what MS was doing, but i seriously went "another cartoony game eh?" during that show. But there was so much other good stuff and i know other games are coming so it doesn't bother me that much.

I am starting to dislike this new "advanced low-poly" graphical style but not because the association with cartoons. It is simply that all of these games look too similar to each other. I am not sure if it is somehow inherent to the technology or if all of the developers try to get on the Fortnite train.

People upset by games being "cartoony" are the lamest, most insecure fucking misanthropes. Like they didn't turn something else into this, robbing it of its identity. This isn't supposed to replace Gears 6.

There's having issues with aspects of a style, like a homogenized approach or an offputting stylistic cue, and then some instantaneous aversion based on nothing.

I thought Everwild was one of the strongest games coming out of X019.

To call it a cartoon is going too far.

"The presence where Xbox making cartoonish games is absolutely ridiculous"

There's some stuff missing in that sentence to be honest, not only the "presence" stuff... doesn't make much sense
It makes a bit more sense if you replace "presence" with "pretence." Still a weirdly-phrased title though.

If there is one thing Rare does really well, it's to create beautiful environments with cartoony/unrealistic graphics.

The lineage from Kinect Sports Rivals to Sea of Thieves to Everwild clearly demonstrates this.

I hope they continue playing to their strengths in this particular area.

Still misses some of those grammar bit thinguies :P

Like what is the pretence, exactly?

That MS is making cartoonish games?

That making cartoonish games is bad?

Something else?

I was gonna post this as a response to the thread, but your post was too relevant to not quote:

Im with Jeff 100%. As an artist fuck off to all those 70+ people in the poll. Microsoft, continue doing what you are doing, you are doing great. Letting studios do what they want is the bedt thing to create exciting stuff, cartoony or realistic and everything in between.

Thank God, not in places like this forum, but there are many people for whom everything other than third person cinematic realism is for children.

This game looks amazing.

My girfriend just recently introduced me to Studio Ghibli starting with Princess Mononoke and I instantly fell in love. (Also many links to Zelda(Whoah. honestly no pun intended))

I showed her this after being floored myself and we couldn't be more excited.

I had thought the whole "cartoony games are for baby it's baby games" thing had finally died out but I saw a ton of that shit for Microsoft's event for some reason. I'll never understand it. Those people probably hate cartoons and animated movies too. Probably a masculinity issue.

Imagine complaining about Rare doing a game with a cartoonish art style, even though their most iconic and beloved games have cartoonish art styles.

I think they have their priorities set.
Sony has and is making sure they deliver big cinematic experiences which works against any Gamepass services they can offer.
Microsoft is banking on smaller games through Gamepass which gives these indies unparalleled exposure until their big AAA can deliver, which is when GP prices will rise.
Nintendo is Nintendo.

I think a lot of Nintendo's IPs are meant to evoke nostalgia, since most of them already consist of iconic characters and stories that are charming to us gamers who want to buy them to experience something new, but also reminds us of our childhood.

I think Microsoft wants to try this until something sticks. Which is a problem since most people nowadays want good graphics and amazing looking worlds

Minecraft, Fortnite and Overwatch all beg to differ.

I don't understand the use of the word presence in the title. Is it like "The presence of cartoonish games on xbox has caused a absolutely ridiculous reaction"?

Wow, alot of extreme hostility here. I have nothing against cartoony or stylized art, however i do think to many of the games shown yesterday looked the same. That fortnite, sea of thieves, cg animated movie unreal 4 tech demo look. Its hard to explain but the games started to blend together visually

I don't think it is bad that a studio makes a cartoony game. I do think it is disappointing because it wasn't something I was looking for and most likely not something I will play based on the art style. The same way I didn't play windwaker because I don't like the art style. I do take offense to the fact that this is somehow a "new" thing. I have held this opinion for years. My complaints were about cartoony games, and that has to do with personal preference and a dislike for art styles. A person like me shouldn't be attacked for sharing disappointment in a chosen art style. Also a studio shouldn't be attacked for choosing the art style they want. It doesn't mean I can't come out and say I don't like it. I mean look at the first Sonic Movie trailer. Commentary is good and discussion is good.

After watching the Everwild video and it's Rare who's behind it, I can't wait to explore this beautiful world.

They are seemingly announcing more and more family friendly games now which is not a bad thing but I would like to see something new in the more hardcore space

I just love how diverse their lineup is now.

Compared to other publishers and other platform holders there doesn't seem to be a template rheir studios are sharing for most of their games. They are taking swings at things.

Frankly I find the subtle narrative that toon shaders and grassy fields were seemingly not a thing until BOTW to be much more tedious. That said Everwild looks amazing, can't recall seeing many people complaining about art direction.

I'm glad they are branching out personally. The Rare game has my interest, I just need to see what the actual gameplay is. But I am glad we are getting stuff from Microsoft that isn't Halo, Gears or Forza.

No need to get offended. When a big critical game does something it usually gets attributed and seen as the one to make something popular, even if it's done before.

I don't think many people are actually complaining about this, but whatever.

I don't mind unrealistic art styles in the slightest. All I'd ask for is variety and quality in whatever art choices are made.

People complained about the 1st trailer for the Sonic movie because it out right looked bad, not because it was cartoony. Expressing disappointment in a game looking cartoony isn't really any different than expressing disappointment in a game looking realistic and we all know the response the latter would get

Premise? Pretense?

But anyways not only is it acceptable that MS or Sony make games like this, it should be encouraged. Even stripping away artistic merit we need more games that can be sold to younger gamers.

I'm sure most Microsoft 'system sellers' will continue to have more realistic artstyles. I really like the artstyle of this new Rare game. And the Grounded trailer didn't bother me either.

In 2020 Microsoft is releasing:
- Halo Infinite
- Grounded
- Bleeding Edge
- Wasteland 3
- Psychonauts 2
- Minecraft: Dungeons
- Gears Tactics
- Flight Simulator
- Battletoads (or is this still planned for 2019?)

And who knows what else they've got in store for the Scarlett launch. I feel this is very diverse in both gameplay and artstyles.
