Game of Thrones, which was a huge part of many people's lives, is coming to an end today and some people are not very happy about it. But that got me thinking and it turns out that another show that was once a big part of my life but I've since almost completely forgotten about began ten years ago today. The pilot episode of Glee aired in a special broadcast on May 19, 2009, ahead of its full first season later that year.

The Glee pilot had lit the television critics' world on fire in the months before it aired, with many identifying it as "the next big thing," something special that would catch the attention of the masses, and they were right. Glee was completely different than anything else on TV, being a musical with a large and unusually diverse ensemble cast. Glee was one of the first online fandoms I got into. The first half of the first season of Glee (and to a lesser extent, the rest of the first season) is still fondly remembered as among the best in the golden age of (network) TV. It had heart and sentimentality while serving as a fun parody of what life was like for a modern high schooler. Eventually, the show started to rapidly descend into a funhouse mirror version of itself, embracing all the tropes it originally tried to spoof. The show became corny, overcommercialized, and frequently offensive to the groups it was trying to represent. By the third season, most of the fanbase actively hated the show, with a dozen different factions of people screaming and bickering at each other over everything they could think of. The Glee fandom dominated websites like Tumblr and Twitter, turning them into battlegrounds for shippers and marginalized groups and music fans. By the fourth season, ratings were in free fall, the tragic death of Cory Monteith caused multiple other storylines to spiral out of control, and eventually the show ended with its sixth season, which was actually a decent return to form for a number of episodes.

Today, Glee is largely forgotten. Community, a show that regularly mocked Glee (and for good reason) to the extent of devoting an entire wonderful episode to spoofing it, is remembered far more fondly. Many of Glee's actors have disappeared from Hollywood, had their careers ruined, or even ended up in prison. Its attempts at diversity are now remembered largely as cheap token efforts, Ryan Murphy desperately trying to appeal to marginalized groups whose struggles he didn't understand. I do think it had a generally positive impact on getting TV writers to recognize the value of representation. But today most people, including myself, have essentially forgotten this show ever existed.

Nonetheless, I'm curious if anyone remembers Glee or was part of the fandom at any point and remembers the good and bad (and very bad) aspects of it, all these years later.

Glee was fun for the first three seasons, then once they 'graduated' it fell apart.

I loved that for a fleeing moment, musicals as TV were almost a thing.

I'll never forget that awful Football game episode.
Also, it's insane to think that most of the main cast is either dead, in jail, or irrelevant.

They should have did a whole new class. The post school stuff was just bad

Glee helped me a lot with getting comfortable talking about LGBT stuff with my family for which I am very grateful.

But holy fuck did it turn to hot garbage after Season 3. Season 6 was just watching a clown car full of wax dummies burn

Agreed.

Season 1 and 3 were great, specially when they covered classic rock stuff. I still have the journey covers and the meatloaf one from Nationals in my ipod.

I think it was an important show for teenagers because of the way they tackled some topics, specially lgbtq youth.

Also who's in jail, actually? Cory and Mark died, but the rest of the cast is still well i think?

The one who was in jail is now dead.

The problem the show had (well, honestly, it had so, so many problems) in that regard was that the writers had completely marginalized the adult cast by Season 3, so the show was simply not built to pivot away from the characters who had become the whole focus of it.

That and the characters were Flanderized in record time.

Empire's still around and doing music, right? And Crazy Ex-Girlfriend lasted a while as well.

Glee was really fun for a couple seasons, then fell out.

Galavant on the other hand was a blast. Wish we had more <3

It was such an overnight success I wonder if A) wasn't ready for it and/or B) Execs yanked control.

I think part of what happened is that the show was originally aimed at an adult (or young adult) audience with the intention of skewering and parodying the high school life experience. But instead the show caught on big with young teenagers and pre-teens which caused a huge shift in how the show was written and marketed.

Loved Glee. First half season was AMAZING, rest of season 1 was solid. Season 2 was good. Went down hill from there. And, I can't watch it anymore. Too many awful things happened to or done by the cast. Can't separate the artist from the art on this one.

I completely forget the teacher dude was the original main character

The huge popularity was part of it, but Glee had basically the same problems that all Ryan Murphy shows up to that point had had, especially his short attention span.

Also, so, so much sexism and questionable depictions of minority groups on a show that clearly considered itself progressive and diverse.

They also completely stole Jonathan Coulton's arrangement to Baby got Back in one of their episodes and paid him no credit.

Back then was a hit, even famous people want to be in that show (there was even a spin off reality show for people who want to be in the show)

Now is totally forgotten, even his protagonist are forgotten

The only ones who had been successful
Are The guy from mindhunt, the guy who won the Emmy for ACS and supergirl
And they even wasn't the main characters

I didn't watch Glee myself but I recall people complaining that once the show got popular, it changed in tone and not for the better.

I think S1 was good... that's it. By the end of S2 I said peace out. Community also was only good for 3 seasons, 50% isn't bad, I guess.

First half of the first season was legit very good. The rest ranges from good to bad but I enjoyed the ride for the most part.

Now Galavant though... THAT is fantastic.

Hold up, I know Corey Monteith (Finn) died of an overdose and Mark Salling (Puck) was convicted of child abuse offenses, but who else died out of the principal cast?

Lea Michele and Diana Aggron deserved better than what they got out of the show, by the way.

Well, I guess I need to watch Community.

Glee is horrendous. Worse than Big Bang Theory.

Community is a very good sitcom, my personal favorite of all time.

Mark Salling committed suicide last year before he could begin his prison sentence.

I couldn't get past how overproduced and over-engineered all the songs sounded. It didn't sound natural. Couldn't get past the pilot for that reason. The music was bad.

I used to love Glee. Then I woke up when it became clear the show just didn't really give a shit about telling meaningful stories about minorities and was content with losing itself in so many insane drama twists like it was a CW show.

Also between Corey's overdose and Mark's child porn charges and subsequent suicide, any fond memories I had for the show have been long gone.

I appreciate what it was, though. It brought TV musicals into the forefront and was amazing for having a diverse cast.

I made it about 4 seasons until the school shooting episode. That and what happened with Cory Monteith and Mark Salling pretty much soured me on the whole show altogether.
