My issue with Disco is the lack of customizing your protagonist, like I wanted to play a woman cop down on her luck like Rachel McAdams' character from True Detective, I feel like the game could have given that much because the customization in that game is already pretty good but not as much as say Original Sin 2. Having said that, I do think Outer Worlds lacks the nuance of Obsidian's earlier titles particularly New Vegas, the absence of Josh Sawyer and John Gonzales is felt strongly, but Outer Worlds is much higher budget game than Pillars 2 so I probably couldn't expect the same amount of RPG elements as that game. Still enjoyed it though!
Yeah as inventive as Disco Elysium appears, I hate having to roleplay as a man.

I love Outer Worlds, so I can't really hate the choice.

Definitely would go with Disco Elysium personally, though.

I wish it was a funner game. The writing underneath it all was enjoyable enough.

Nothing will touch Shadowbringers for me though. Best villain in gaming of the past decade

Congrats to Obsidian. Glad to see them get recognition.

Although, I personally could not enjoy this game. Hopefully their next RPG under MS will be more enticing for me.

Outer Worlds is the game that made glad that gamepass exists, I would be pissed if I had pay 60 bucks for it.

I still need to get around to finishing it. Thus far I've mostly enjoyed what I've played of it, but I'm far from loving it. It's a bit of a formulaic, more of the same from decades ago type of experience, and if I'm honest, a rather forgettable and archaic one at that. It also doesn't help that even in its hardest setting it is shockingly easy.

That being said, it is still charming and quirky, and has interesting or enjoyable moments, areas, art etc sprinkled throughout. If I hadn't played it via Game Pass I would probably have been somewhat disappointed.

On a side note, what were the other RPG's it was competing against this year?

Is disco elysium turn based? Intrigued by the massive amount of praise its getting here but unfortunately i cant really get into those types of games anymore even though they have such good writing (divinity 2 for example)

No. Its dialogue based. There is no combat.

people sure turned against this game. I like it a lot. With bioware on life support and bethesda doing whatever, it's been a while I played a game like it and I realized how I missed party based rpgs with decent production values. Isometric games are ok, they just can't create the same feeling and expressions that 3D characters have and really enjoyed having that and well written party members again. Maybe it is the scarcity that makes me like it this much, I don't care, it was well worth my time. I would definitely pick it over KH3 easily.

IGN's full list of nominees were:
  • The Outer Worlds
  • Disco Elysium
  • Pokemon Sword/Shield
  • Kingdom Hearts 3
  • Dragon Quest Builders 2

Okay. The game that has an auto-leveling system in which the most RPG thing you can do is switching out your armor (one item) and weapon (one item) is one of the top RPGs this year? Apex Legends is a better RPG than DQB2 by those bottom scraping standards.

Disco Elysium should have won both.

It did for those of us who played it.

I'm still playing through Outer Worlds, level 24 or so currently and so far I'm just like yea it's alright but certainly not on the same level as Disco. Very samey everything really? I don't know, I mean it's not bad to play it just doesn't really excel or push the boundaries?

Can we change the tag for the Disco Elysium OT to this please?

Though a bit surprised at the lack of Fire Emblem supporters in this thread :P Thought it had a big following on this forum.

I played it for 100+ hours and liked it quite a bit. But it's not really an RPG, to me it's a strategy game with a layer of character development on top as part of the strategic gameplay.

It's a very messy and unpolished game though, both technically and in terms of story delivery. I liked the overall story, but again... very messy.

Congrats to The Outer Worlds. I absolutely loved it, even though it seems like the gaming community kinda turned on it after it came out.

I haven't played Disco yet, though.

Yeah. Agreed on all counts. Barely ranks as an RPG to me. The numbers game being all semi-random definitely doesn't help. Still a better RPG than DQ Builders 2, which was one of IGN's other nominees.

Yeah I don't understand how this won over Disco and whats worse is the lack of Fire Emblem in the nominees. Kind of ridiculous.

Outer Worlds started off decent enough with some clever writing but my god is the game horribly balanced and chock full of game design that doesn't respect the player's intelligence.

I haven't played Disco yet (might play it on Switch when it comes out since at the moment I don't have a PC) but man, was TOW a disappointment.

The gameplay was meh, the characters forgettable, the worlds all look the same and lack originality. The dialogues were the best part of it, but I really didn't care about the story and I'm happy it's shorter than the average RPG. Saying "But it's an AA game!" doesn't work for me, cause we have tons of indies with better gameplay and story.

I guess if I had to give it to someone other than ZA/UM it would be Obsidian.

I usually play these games years after their release, but because of Game Pass PC I was there day one for The Outer Worlds. Spend about 40 hours with the game and enjoyed most of my time. Yeah, the game's combat system is unbalanced and it's a bit too formulaic overall, but it still kept me engaged throughout my playthrough. I was not super into the whole hyper-capitalist society thing, but I really liked most of the characters and the overall writing. No technical or quest related problems on my side, in fact the Gears 5 campaign was way buggier and glitchier for me, which is remarkable. So congrats Obsidian .... and I cannot wait for my Disco Elysium playthrough in 2021.

Haven't played Disco Elysium which sounds really good, but I enjoyed my time with Outer Worlds.
Best dialogue I've come across, and the interaction among party members with each other, and other NPCs was a nice surprise.

As someone that doesn't have time to drop hundreds of hours on a game, I liked the shorter length (which still wasn't that short). I felt like Outer Worlds never wasted my time with stupid mini games or repetitive battle animations . I won't argue against this receiving any awards.

It's honesty the most bland RPG I've played in God knows how long, it felt like "babies first RPG" with how overpowered you are without even trying, I couldn't even finish it.

It's an ok game that was fine. It's hard mustering any kind of enthusiasm for any game release from 2019.

How many times do people need to be reminded of the fact that IGN isn't a singular entity? Those reviews are how two people feel about each game, not how everybody at IGN feels about them.
This. Also a score attached to an opinion is not logical at all, so with this premise you just can't say that a game with a higher score not winning isn't logical... yes, because the very premise is 'false' or at least not logical.

I'm in the middle of TOW and really like it so far. Haven't got around to play DE but I can imagine that mainstream media and people have more fun playing TOW than reading through DE. And despite all the praise for the roleplaying options and astonishing writing in DE one have to admit that, on a gameplay front, you don't do much else than reading and managing your inventory/stats. Not saying that's bad or anything, just that I could think that many people (obviously at IGN) don't like that enough to vote it as RPG of the year.

On the other hand there wasn't really much choice, giving that there weren't many RPGs released this year.

In the end it's just IGN, one of many many media outlets.

I feel like I am in a parallel world.
A few weeks ago everyone loved the game and declared Obsidian as the greatest. What happened? What did I miss? Obsidian started killing stray dogs, or what?
Ill give you three guesses as to why it's being bashed now, but you'll only need one.
