This game seems to have an overall tepid reaction everywhere I look: Here, Gamefaqs, Reddit, /v/ (lol), Something Awful, YouTube, Twitter, and random RPG sites.

I think the one two punch of people wanting to stick it to Bethesda after Fallout 76 pissed the bed and TOW introducing itself as being made by the same people who mad Fallout 1/2/New Vegas got people hyped up.

Went in expecting Obsidian's Fallout 2/NV and I got Bethesda's Fallout games with a bit of Mass Effect. Can't complain since I enjoyed it but its not a game I would replay ever again.
Probably enjoyed it a bit more since it was a Gamepass title.

7/10 is a good way to describe it. Play it once and delete it. I enjoyed the single playthrough of the campaign and had zero desire to go back into it. Loot was pointless, maps are dead, story was very contrived and paint-by-numbers.

I'm sorry for anyone who paid more than a Game Pass sub for it. Overall very overhyped and overrated- people are thirsty for anything New Vegas-ish no matter how milquetoast it ends up being

At launch i see a lot of people saying this was Game of the Year or Game of the Generation level good. But now more and more people are saying it's just good but not amazing.

Outer Worlds is the very definition of a 7/10 game. It's completely fine but does nothing new, the story is fine. The graphics are mediocre, soundtrack is forgettable. Voice acting is good and Pavarti is a fantastic character, while the rest of characters are forgettable. 7/10

Dropped it soon after I left the planet you start on. Not a bad game. But did not find it interesting enough to keep going.

Why he hype? Because Many other people had a different impression of the game after playing the whole game.

The whole Fallout 3-style gameplay is just so dated and shallow in 2020. Wish they'd tried something else than just copying it.
With that said i'm not sure the next Elder Scrolls will be able to evolve the formula either.

7/10 is where I stand too. I didn't get all the game of the year hype. The beginning is quite good and the writing is definitely its strong point. Pavarti is awesome. That said, I beat it once and did all the companion quests and have no inkling to go back. Far too easy even on hard. Wasn't really feeling the annoying survival mechanics of supernova difficulty either. It also just got too repetitive by the end. Even if you were visiting other planets, the enemies felt samey, particularly the human and robot ones.

I agree.

I was hyped, and only played like 8 hours.

Nothing new, nothing great, a lost opportunity.

I need a good gameplay to keep pushing, and it just doesn't have it. I've seen great write-ups and videos about characters and their development, but I don't see myself getting through dozens of hours of subpar FPS gameplay for it. Too bad.

Yeah I was very disappointed by The Outer Worlds. The combat was really boring and it got to the point where my companions were so strong I barely had to do anything. The story wasn't anything special. I was expecting so much more.
I'm kinda glad Epic bought the exclusive rights and I just used a free month of Gamepass I got to play it.

I think we're all just starved for Obsidian/Bethesda/Bioware type WRPGs that we will accept even mediocre entries at this point.

a parallel universe
I got pretty far then just quit. No desire to go back to it. Probably my biggest disappointment of the year. The only memorable part was the first time you walk into the market on that big ship I forget the name of because the game was so forgettable.

I enjoyed it thoroughly. But you could tell they didn't have the resources for several companion questlines. Some were too short. I liked all the characters. Most of the dialogue interactions are A+. Very witty and well voiced.

How this game has an 85MC is a mystery in itself.

In my opinion 85 on metacritic is very generous for this game. I'd give it a 7/10 myself. I think it's a one trick pony with it's snarky comment on capitalism. Once I realized that the humor is basically "everyone in this universe is really, really dumb and everything belongs to corporations" repeated over and over again, the game became bland really quickly. Just my opinion though and I'm happy for everyone that could enjoy it more than I did.

Played for 4 hours and stopped. Shallow, easy gameplay with no meaningful rewards. The story after the world is buillt up as "corporation own everything" is only ok, voice acting is good, ost and sound FX are ok. If the backstory doesn't grip you after the first hour, there's very little about the game that rises above mediocrity.

Only way I'd finish the game is if it was filled with NPC's voiced by Keith David, Katey Sagal, Tony Jay, Simon Templeman and Anna Gunn hamming it up, but it isn't.

Yeah, I dropped once I got to Monarch. It's a decent experience with some great character writing and art style, but it's very average-to-good in most other aspects. In fact, I'm pretty sure people souring on it is what helped build Disco Elysium's momentum towards the end of the year, where even mainstream outlets like the Guardian and WaPo had reviews of it.

It was ok.

The worst thing for me was that it felt like I've played this exact same game multiple times these past few years.

Yeah I'm gonna drop it glad it's not just me whose not feeling it with this. Like 10-15 years ago I'd probably have liked it a whole lot more.
It just doesn't grab me today with the sea of great games to play. It's trying too hard and it shows. I will say the writing was decent but that's not enough for me if the gameplay loop isn't anything above a 6 or 7/10

Like Nioh 2 is coming out tomorrow and I absolutely loved the first so I know I'll like the sequel.
Outer Worlds seems like a very shallow by the numbers experience in comparison. Like the loot sucked in the first planet it was very basic and samey , the weapons were ok but ultimately any type of gun made little difference. The food items were useless no need to use them. The game had decent snappy ui and menus and everything was easy to access and track quests etc so that part of it was very user friendly. It's just the whole gameplay around it

put it this way I've enjoyed replaying super Metroid more after 25 years over playing this game lol.

I'm so glad people are saying this, I rented it and played through the first planet and have had no interest in going back since. My gf was working until midnight last night so would have been the perfect time to smash out a few hours but I just couldn't be bothered, there is nothing in the story that makes me want to find out what happens next, all of the characters so far are pretty boring too

I was really excited to play this but it's really not what the reception last year suggested it was

7/10 is about what i'd give it too, and that's being generous.

+ writing is brilliant
+ gives the choice and world altering decision making missing from recent Bethesda titles

but there's a lot more bad

- it's literally a Fallout copy from a gameplay perspective, and the Fallout engine just feels dated
- slowing time <<<<<<< V.A.T.S
- the basic story of 'evil corporation bad' 'workers good' get's hammered home within hours and becomes boring
- the overarching story isn't that great
- many of the main quests feel like side quests
- exploring the world is incredibly boring and doesn't compare to Bethesda's titles
- so. much. chromatic. aberration.

But seriously, the writing is on point.

Pretty much this

As a huge Fallout/Elder Scrolls fan this game did nothing for me. It was way too basic and the writing didn't impress after just playing Disco Elysium (not calling it bad, just not as good). Dropped it after an hour or 15. I really hope that with the big MS injection they get the time and budget to create something at least on par with current day big scale RPGs, because i believe the talent is there.

Honestly, I don't like when big companies make "big companies bad" humor lol

I find so many characters very unique and interesting written (good writing is just so subjective). The combat is fast-paced and fun most of the time and can be brutal if enemies are above your level, even with your companions, though the AI can be exploited easily. Everything else than energy weapons don't feel like having a punch and feel weak, though.

There are a lot of skill checks and humorous answers in dialogs and NPCs actually react to your (crazy) answers and don't ignore it like in Bethesda's games.

The worlds are small which I appreciate after so many huge open world games these days. There is some environmental storytelling, but it, and the exploration, could be better and more rewarding.

There are interesting quests but nothing mind-bending like you have so many times in let's say The Witcher 3. It's a different level.

I, too, don't get the constant praise for Obsidian because I don't find any of their games exceptional. They do solid RPGs but no game-changers. The plot twist at the end of PoE was so weak after the huge build-up before and left me completely untouched (because, without spoilers, they resolved it around "in-game things" you may simply don't believe in and therefore have no emotional connection to it). The by the community highly praised Alpha Protocol played like ass and didn't look any good even when it came out and I had no connection to the protagonists, he was no one I could bond with. The combat in Fallout New Vegas was only slightly better than in Bethesda's attempt on Fallout and it didn't feel like an improvement. The writing and dialogs were way better, but you still had so many empty and visually ugly places and lots of limitations with that outdated engine that it was only marginal better on the gameplay front.

None of their games are bad, though, not even Dungeon Siege 3 because it offered what only a handfull other games, if any, up to this date, ARPG offers: full coop experience with up to 4 people. Hack and slash with fully voiced dialogs and heroes, and decisions to make while supporting 100% coop, that means even your buddies engage in conversations, like in Star Wars The Old Republic. It's also not just hack and slash where you stand opposite an enemy and hack away and almost automatically heal all the incoming damage. It requires effective blocking and dodging and timed attacks.

Anyways, they do solid and good RPGs, which can't be said for many devs. TOW is a 7/10 or 8/10 tops, and that's okay and totally do them justice. It's a good game after all, but no revelation. Still better than any Fallout Bethesda could come up with.

I think it surely has big flaws. I loved the first few hours, then everything became kinda the same. Loot was useless, combat was weak, quests felt samey, worlds looked too similar and not particularly original/interesting. What kept me pushing through was the simple fact that it was like Mass Effect and Fallout combined, and at its core it's great as is.

However, once I reached the last hub, I felt like everything became coherent, and the entire game (quests, writing, etc.) converged greatly. Really loved the last 3-4hours.

In the end, I think the game's problems is being a AA-game that looks and feels like what should be a AAA game. So you have certain expectations that are certainly not met.

I think it'll be good to see how they shake up the formula for the DLC, which might tease how things could get better in the sequel.

Really disappointing game, for me. I tried through Gamepass and man....4h was enough to drop it, boring, awful art/graphics, repetitive, not interesting characters or story....

While I agree with all the 7/10 comments, I do think it sets up good worldbuilding for possible sequel. I enjoyed the world and backstory enough so having that with better mechanics and with a bigger budget it could be something special.

It was one of the better fallout style games, and it wasnt 100+ hours long, so i was pretty happy with it.

I bet the sequel will be even better

It's good for the budget it had, but it's a pretty average game. I had fun with it and it has a lot of potential for a sequel with more budget/ambition, though.

I'd say it's a 6/10 game. It really doesn't go much beyond plain mediocrity. Nothing in this game is really good. It's the most disapponting game I've played in a while.
The game systems, itemization, writing, art style - it's all bland and feels like a game I've played 20 times before, just worse. There's nothing worth writing home about in the entire game.

It's a tasteless McGame.

The good
I loved getting to know all of the party members, the character writing is funny and it has alot of heart. I really felt invested in the local politics of the different planets and the impact my decisions had, and I need to mention that the music is fantastic.

The bad
Theres just way too much looting going on in this game, its honestly exhausting. The planets themselves have a tendency to feel small and samey. The combat is decent but its very easy to break the game, which is hard to resist when combat encounters are just "fine".

Verdict
the gameplay loop outside of character interaction isnt much fun, however the dialogue with party members and some other noteworthy npc's can make up for that. I look back fondly on my time with The Outer Worlds, but I would have loved it more if it would have scrapped the looter-shooter aspects and focused fully on story.

I can agree with some of shortcomings, and that loot was especially underwhelming.

Still, I enjoyed my time with Outer Worlds. What I really like is that it's not a 100hr RPG, so those of us that don't have tons of time to sink into an RPG can see the credits.

Parvati was the absolute star of the show for me. Best companion character I've ever seen.

Combat...I enjoyed it. Probably less if I played it with a controller, but mouse and keyboard felt fine. I felt the writing was fine as were the dialogue options.

7/10 is generous for me, it's tied with R&C reboot as my most disappointing game.

The art style is garish, the theme of extreme capitalism in a super distant future is tiring as it can already be seen happening today. lack of combat variety, loot, basic AF stealth/pickpocket/lockpick mechanics. Leveling system was mostly just stat increases. No desire to explore the world.
Some characters were great though.

I can't even say I'm that excited for a sequel with a way bigger budget because the setting and how they kept on hammering in the corporation element is just so meh.

It's fine. I had fun playing even if it was way too easy. Still as good as most games in 2019
