Delay seems likely to me. The fact that this doesn't include a Sakurai Presents in the first place makes it obvious the character is not ready yet.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if this was a Pokémon, but I would be very surprised indeed if it were Cinderace. I can't see them putting another Fire Starter in, what with Charizard and Incineroar having already made the cut. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they avoided the starters and went for Toxtricity, Urshifu or even Zarude or Zacian.
My money is on Mario's worst nightmare finally arriving... especially with Crash 4 coming out the next day.
Technically, the character could just be Pyra/Mythra without Rex. Smash Bros characters don't have to confine to the lore of the games they originate from.

Isn't the whole theme/gameplay about XB2 about the connection of drivers and their blades? Leaving out Rex would be a really dump way of repping that game.

To be fair, there aren't a ton of options left that would be realistic for DLC. There's Rex, a BotW character, a Gen 8 Pokémon, & maybe Ayumi if her remake gets localized that we know of.
I gotta be honest. Pretty much every one of my dream characters (rip Jill Dozer) is already in the game, so I'm going to enjoy the ride no matter who gets added.

Given that the Smash speculation thread never discussed it, it was likely BS from the start.
That's kind of where I'm at. I figure if it was a third-party character, it would have been leaked.
Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised. I can see them expanding the "pass" to 2022, then possibly even confirm an additional bonus character or 2 as an apology for extending the promised deadline. Not that I'm getting my hopes up, but consolation is not unheard of with businesses.

Guys, Sora can only get into Smash if Disney gives the green light, they own the character.

This. I can respect Sakurais mandate that fighters must originate from a video game, BUT if he ever goes back on that and it's not Goku, I'll be extremely upset.
If Dante does make it in I really hope they don't use his DMC3 design. Easily my least favorite look for the character out of the 5 games.
Beyond Ring Fit Adventure (which became successful too late for FP2), Rhythm Heaven is the last somewhat-significant EPD franchise without a playable character in Smash (& we almost got one in Smash 3DS/Wii U).
