Don't know how long we will wait for this.
There's Dragon Age 4 too. I doubt if Bioware can handle all of these.

So, yeah, I've been super hesitant to share my excitement about this before more was said (because I wasn't keen on getting attacked again lol), but since it's already out there, here are several reasons:

There is a lot of strong old school talent from the original trilogy working hard to do this, including who's directing, though it's not my place to say and speak for them.

Fantastic to hear! Thank you for sharing.

i hope they bring back jack wall and sam hulick doing their GOAT ambient synth style:

Yeah, there's nothing quite like it.

Anyone else hoping the time skip is as short as possible? I feel like they're already committed to building off mass effect three strongly enough to where they shouldn't be afraid of making it take place relatively soon after the trilogy. If you want to make use of nostalgia you might as well give yourself the potential option to use more characters from races that don't live as long. Plus I'd like to see lots of cameos as a selfish request.

Personally, I would enjoy a small time skip, but there is admittedly the question of what do you have all these 'living legends' even do if you keep all of the ME3 squaddies (not to mention ME2's vast cast) - there would need to be room for at least several new squaddies to mix things up/play off of narratively, unless the story is literally a direct continuation in the post-war rebuilding, and each crew member correlates to one of the planets/factions, or something?

It would definitely have to be (and still is likely going to be) a juggling priorities list in terms of nostalgia versus not re-treading the same plotlines/characters (or at least, giving them a convincing new coat of paint via motivations/personality growth/change, etc...)

The other 'concern' is that if it's only a short time-skip...that would be a lot more pressure to keep Shepard involved, and/or more likely to suck up the protagonist role if the team doesn't want to go that route.

Depending on the severity of how badly shit got messed up if Destroy is canon, it may have also taken a good chunk of time (i.e. centuries) for tech levels to climb back up/discover a new form of FTL in order to truly become spacefaring again.

I think the logistical concerns about constructing a narrative when the galaxy is in tatters are completely fair. It's really hard to say how liberal they could be with just hand waving certain inconvenient questions like space travel and the general continuity of society and galactic politics after a devastating war. Ultimately I'd like them to somehow tackle the question of who fills the power vacuum and how did everyone rebuild (or not rebuild at all). It's definitely a sensitive balancing act to not squash new characters and ideas under the weight of the trilogy.

Warts and all, Mass Effect Trilogy was likely one of my favorite times i've had in my history of gaming.

I love this. More Mass Effect should exist. Even though it had many missteps, it still just only scratched the surface of its potential.

I can't wait to go on another journey in this universe and it's instantly one of my most looked forward to games of this new generation.

I don't really like the mass effect games but the potential for a sprawling intergalactic sci fi is immense. It's also incredibly hard to pull off. I like the general atmosphere of ME and the music is phenomenal but I can't say I'm optimistic they'll put together a package I'll like.

Dragon Age 2022 maybe. This has for sure only just started development.

Good to hear some of the original talent is coming back, although those big names leaving the Dragon Age team recently and whatever the fuck happened during Anthem's development has me extremely skeptical for now.

Feels like this will come 2023 (mid current gen). Shame. I remember when we could get 3 Mass Effect + 3 Dragon Age games during 1 generation :P

My dreams of an Andromeda sequel just evaporated. I did not exoect (nor wish for) a direct sequel to 3 bringing back the same characters... I hoped they would not touch the trilogy and just make something new.

This is looking like they're gonna find/resurrect Shepard all over again. Doing this would destroy all impact from the Citadel DLC and the last goodbyes in ME3.

I fucking love ME1 and 2 so I want to be excited, but I'm gonna temper my expectations. Same for DA4. I want them to actually come out and I want them to be good, but until I'm actually playing the games, I'm gonna expect absolutely nothing.

Honestly, while you're not wrong I've heard that Inquisition runs so poorly on PS3/360 that it is nigh-unplayable.

Then again, I never played it there -- just PS4 -- so maybe that was exaggeratory!

Andromeda's in the trailer too.

I'm guessing the sequel deals with the Andromeda crew's return to the Milky Way, for some reason.

Mike Gamble hints at ties to both the original trilogy and Andromeda

General short personal musings so I can shut my brain off and go to sleep, lol, but it's nothing particularly revelatory:

- The Destroy ending with a high EMS has the implication that Shepard is still out alive out there somewhere, as Shepard's name doesn't end up on the memorial wall like in the Synthesis or Control endings. That being said, Liara is much older here, and I presume if Shepard had been found after the events of ME3, they'd have passed away a long time ago. You could revive Shepard or Shepard could have been frozen/in stasis for all that time, but I feel like it's wayyyyy too derivative of ME2.

- Even though I was frustrated at how Shepard's story ended at the Crucible, and as much as I loved them as a character, I hope they're not brought back as the player character. Shepard vs. The Reapers was the overarching thread of the trilogy, it would feel weird to bring Shepard back again with the Reaper conflict resolved. Poor Shepard fought long and hard, and deserves a rest. I also feel like I really said goodbye to my Shepards between the base game and the Citadel DLC (I grieved, I had my catharsis), so I'm happy to move on to a new protagonist.

- I also hope in a post-Destroy canon world that Shepard got to have a 'we'll bang, okay?' moment with their love interest, lol.

- Liara is the only squad mate that can't be killed across the trilogy, so using Liara as a bridge between the trilogy and ME4 is clever. (I actually thought Vega was another -- though he'd be long gone by the events of ME4 -- but no, I forgot that he can be killed by Harbinger at the end of ME3.)

- I love that my visual knowledge of galaxies is so poor that I had no idea that Andromeda was specifically in the trailer. Me: ...ah, yes, that looks like pretty sparkly space!

From Mike Gamble's Tweets, it seems like they're combining the story threads of the Milky Way and Andromeda, if that helps?

I think Liara can also die during the beam run, though? If memory serves?

But (as with Vega) that's such a rare scenario that she is essentially fully equipped with plot armor, yeah, haha.

Oh man seeing Liara almost made me tear up! I love this series so damn much! Shame it'll probably be another 5-6 years until we actually get to play it...

Completely off-topic, but Milky Way...first time i stand still by that name. Its a bit dorky, and not really space sounding...not cool intergalactic sounding such as Andromeda or Triangulum Galaxy :p

Blame the Ancient Greeks. Their legend for it is that Heracles nursed on Hera's breast, but she pushed him away and the spray of milk from her breast became the galactic rim we see from Earth.

Other cultures use different names. Wikipedia has a few, but there's more. The Milky Way might've been the Old Norse Bifröst, for instance.

Also, your using of the phrase "stand still" makes me wonder: are you Dutch, by any chance? Don't know if that expression's a thing in other languages.

Showed both galaxies, but focused on Milky Way. Concept art has an Angaran. It's going to tie in to Andromeda in some way unless the last month's teaser was bullshit.

I feel like they'll timeskip and the only Andromeda characters still around are SAM and maybe Peebee... Andromeda being SAM's origin story. SAM will have evolved into a full Synthetic intelligence after a lifetime with Ryder learning what it means to be alive. Andromeda decisions will dictate to types of Andromeda tech he brings back to the Milky Way with him.

Great! It has been a long time since I played through the trilogy, so I'm looking forward to grabbing the remasters next year and getting through them. If they can pull this off, I'll be so happy.

Man, what is it about Mass Effect that causes me to betray my instincts and get my hopes up so high? ME1 was a near revelatory experience for me in gaming. I would spend hours just exploring the mostly barron planets and get lost in the audio logs and lore of the universe. The story and RPG nature is ME1 were just incredible as well.

I continue to hold on to the naive hope that the team can truly build off of ME1, recreating the sense of awe, wonder, and exhilaration the possibilities of exploring the universe present.

I personally was not a fan of the heavy streamlining of the games, with a heavier focus on tighter cover-based shooting, planet scanning, and lighter/less RPG mechanics. I really hope the new game will lean more into the RPG mechanics with deeper skill trees, specializations, loot, possible settlement building/colonization, stat based damage, status effects, weapons returning to a heat based system, and not side missions that fight just involve shooting mobs or fetching items.

I'm still a believer in the Mako, and that its gameplay is something the team can get right. Exploring large planets, or large areas of planets should be a part of the ME dna.

Edit: man, imagining what a next-gem only Mass Effect will look like is just too exciting!
