Five years ago, the labor movement got an unexpected shot in the arm thanks to a bunch of angry bloggers. When workers at the smart, snarky digital news outlet Gawker went public with their organizing drive and unionized with the Writers Guild of America, East, they set a vital new precedent in an exploitative, unstable industry. The floodgates opened in digital journalism throughout the United States, with shop after shop joining the movement and swelling the WGAE's ranks by 1,500 new members since the Gawker action. The new organizing also isn't confined to digital-only workplaces—WGAE organizers are currently mounting a drive at corporate media behemoth Hearst—or to one union, as the News Guild of New York has also helped organized digital shops, including The New Republic's.

The Myth of the Progressive Boss

Cenk Uygur talked a good game about The Young Turks being the premier progressive media outlet. Then his staff tried to unionize.

Buried the lede:

There's a great and pressing need for progressive publications (and politicians) to walk the walk they've long been talking for the sake of enhancing their public profiles and marketability.
We definitely need leaders to do more than just pay lip service to progressive ideas.

I am as progressive as a boss as I am allowed to be. That means effectively unlimited PTO, leaves of absence, annual wage increases, etc.

The article title is more a jab at Cenk than a general statement.

Bosses are only as progressive as they are allowed to be. Especially in a corporate situation, your boss has very little power in terms of deciding pay or defining policies that drive worker exploitation.

Capitalism is competition. The more money you have the more competitive you can be. It's hard to be progressive when your competitor does fine and isn't progressive. The competitor in this climate will win in the end because they can build a bigger vault to slowly push out others. Let's look at Amazon and national delivery services like Canada Post oe United Postal Service: Amazon has more capital and is making large strides into delivery, so much that they are automating incredibly fast which is decrease costs overtime for them. Canada Poat and USPS cannot compete with that as they cannot just automate that easily so they will lose business overtime when Amazon and other delivery services get way more cheap.

A progressive boss isn't in the interest of the business long term. You would need to rewrite how society views wealth, property, and overall how much anyone can own to make them worth it.

My father ran his own non for profit company for over 25 years. He gave his staff annual salary increases and up until the last two years before he retired, his staff never had to contribute a single penny towards health benefits. He paid for it. The last two years, they had to contribute towards 5% of the costs. He also held Summer and holiday parties at our home, for his staff, every single year.
