Yeah this list is not right. Have they asked like 3 persons in each country?
Like ive never have heard anyone old or young have slowpoke as their favourite pokemon here.
This whole map really sounds like tales from my ass.

Quick Google search tells me Kabuto is the name of a Naruto character and also a type of Japanese helmet.

A small poll would've been accurate then google search data in this instance. That methodology section is a travesty. So goddamn thin.

I dunno how anyone could manage collecting data about such a thing, but using google's search data is a bit dumb. like I don't look up my fave pokemon on Google cuz I know all about them already, lol? People usually tend to look up terms they, well, don't know.

tbh I have my doubts. Onix is also a very popular material, and a car, so I wonder if they're mixing up the searches or if they're actually counting "Onix" + another Pokémon term.
Kids love insects and bugs and fossils in Japan. It's not surprising in the least!
In fact the initial concept of Pokemon originated from insect collecting
Kabuto might mean helmet or the type of beetle, or one of the various anime characters. Its likely it has little to do with the fossil pokemon itself being the most searched.
Nothing on how they accounted for names that aren't unique, nothing on how they accounted for translations. I can think of a few other flaws but those are the big two that they just left out of the write-up completely.
It would be pretty time-consuming to put all the names into trends data for all the countries. Still...
did they search for the localized names in each country or did they just plug in the American names? They also clearly didn't take into account that some of the Pokémon names are also words... Kabuto is obviously not the most popular Pokémon in japan, but it means helmet and is also the name of a million other things.
Well they should have put in the time and effort to check and put in every pokemon, a 25th anniversary only comes once.

Yeah, judging from what I can see here, the data they're using is probably unfiltered/uninformed and therefore garbage re: Kabuto, Onix, Paras, and probably plenty of the other oddbals.
As the official inofficial german representative, i call bollocks on Golem being most popular over here. Heck it's not even the Alolan one with the cool beard! ;D
