And Ad Astra was pretty bad.God this was atrocious. I can't believe anyone thinks this was as good or better than Ad Astra. That movie was far better than whatever this was.
The ending doesn't make sense unless...
it's meant to be that bleak; in which case, fair enough. The couple are simply going back to the planet to live out their life and die. The most likely thing to happen is their daughter buries both of them and then dies alone.
Thing is, they mention the colony ship having meant to be launched in a week's time. Considering there was some warning of impending disaster, since they had time to evacuate, I would have preferred if it had launched early. Maybe in a bad condition due to rushing.
As the Aether came back, Augustine could have realised that the colony ship needed help to get out of orbit or it would fail, but the Aether would need to be alerted and guided to aid them. It would make his journey to contact them more important. It also would have given the space crew an actual goal that meant something. Instead we got kinda busy work repairing the communications dish, which only resulted in a delay in the story.
There could have been real challenges as they helped the colony ship, ending with escorting it to the new world, giving humanity an actual future. Augustine could have died regretting abandoning his daughter but knowing she'd move on to a future without him, as all parents must do. All of this mirroring humanity's failure not to destroy themselves but having hope in the last generation.
It just seemed bleak and meaningless, and not in a good way; more in a bland, flat manner.
Their films are honestly mostly a miss for me. It seems this film isn't any different.Every time I'm hyped by a Netflix movie it end up being a bust😣
Netflix had nothing to do with the production of Uncut Gems. That's A24. All Netflix did was distribute it internationally. When did 'Uncut Gems' come out, as that was genuinely the last good film Netflix made/produced?
Yeah and it's crazy since they just buy rights for the most part iirc. So at some point they should be able to land good flicks and it's just isn't happening or very rarelyTheir films are honestly mostly a miss for me. It seems this film isn't any different.
I just finished watching it a little while ago. I concur. It felt like it could have gone somewhere on multiple fronts but it never quite amounted to anything interesting. I wanted to like it, but it just did nothing for me.My one word description would be meandering
I just never felt like it had a point
I just think their mostly buying and producing scripts that have been rejected by Hollywood.Yeah and it's crazy since they just buy rights for the most part iirc. So at some point they should be able to land good flicks and it's just isn't happening or very rarely
You might not agree, but they made some decent action popcorn movies like 6 Underground, Extraction and The Old Guard.I was hoping for something in the vein of the superb 'Ad Astra', yet this doesn't even belong in a conversation with that film. Probably my most letdown movie of the year, given that George Clooney usually chooses his films wisely, and has shown that he is a competent director in prior movies too.
I have got to say, Netflix are fantastic in the documentaries and TV shows department, especially this year however, their movies leans far more towards miss than hit.

"Oh, a new Netflix sci-fi movie.*
*adds to watchlist*
"I wonder what Era thinks of it."
*reads thread*
*removes from watchlist*
If I used Era's general opinion for everything, I'd watch/play nothing. That being said, wasn't that interested in the movie to begin with, so the reactions sort of solidifies that.
I wonder if this would've worked better as a "sci-fi" All Is Lost focused on Clooney. You knew something was off with the girl since the beginning because she was just too damn quiet and creepy the whole movie. I'd rather of not had her in it to be honest. Or have her talk. The silence was just silly.
FTR, my putting it on the level of Ad Astra is not meant as a compliment to either.God this was atrocious. I can't believe anyone thinks this was as good or better than Ad Astra. That movie was far better than whatever this was.
Good point, that would make it less bleak, but this is not a movie that should put that information after the credits. At the very end of the credits, there is some radio static/noise. I guess it could be nothing, but I was thinking maybe it could mean the colony ship made it out?
Ooof. I just watched this since I remembered it was coming out.
Movie is too goddamn long. It felt like a lifetime had passed and then I checked the runtime and saw it still had 1 hour and 23 minutes left. Just a whole lot of nothing happening.
The woman dying got no reaction out of me. I barely even know who you are.
I burst out laughing when the two dudes just decide to go kill themselves for no reason. Like what the hell. Wouldn't you rather just go back to the planet? I interpreted it as the one dude's sons (who might be dead already from radiation poisoning) and his wife have gone to some other planet to live. So instead of the distinct 0.01% possibility of maybe seeing them again by returning to the K-23 planet and waiting or living on in their memory.....the dad decides to go to earth and....die for some reason and the other dude decides to go along and die too. 😂😂😂 So dumb.
The twist was ridiculous and predictable. You knew something was off with the girl since the beginning because she was just too damn quiet and creepy the whole movie. I'd rather of not had her in it to be honest. Or have her talk. The silence was just silly.
Complete waste of time. Probably a 4/10 from me.
Way too long. Nothing happens. The whole thing just feels like a giant waste of time, as you said.
Maya dying was so stupid. They death-flagged her way too hard with the whole "I've never walked before" and "My first and last spacewalker". With how much they focused on her family and friends versus the other characters, she was doomed from the start.
The dudes going back to Earth, I guess I get it. There's a 0.01% chance they find the underground bases but no one is gonna let them in. It's a death sentence like you said.
For the twist, yeah, it was dumb. I wish it was presented better as him dealing with what he knows as hallucinations of his daughter and what he thinks she'd be like versus hanging onto some old memory. I was gonna say she's silent because he's never heard her talk, but then again she laughed and he's never heard her laugh.
It was also kind of unclear but they mentioned the colony on K-23 but I'm not sure if the lady was just BSing Augustine. I'm not sure if there's actually a colony like she said? Also, if the two dudes took the ship doesn't that mean the couple can't actually get back onto K-23?
Also I was expecting something supernatural with that bird scene, and the guy in the plane. Got nothing.
The movie seems to want to prey on what you want by dangling something that could be cool in front of your face and then goes "nah".
Arg.

As I understood the timeline, the colony ship was scheduled to leave ~2 weeks after the catastrophe, but there was nothing besides the post credit radio static to indicate what happened to it.There are actually two drop ships, it's why Chandler, and Bichir wanted to go down. No colony, the Aether crew was sent out to find answers about k-23, while there was a separate colony (?) ship that left earth a week ago, but they had no contact with (but you hear static at the end of the film lol).
