I love that none of the reviews posted had commented on it being an animated podcast

On ep3 and Im enjoying it. I like that it's not just Not-Adventure Time and think the fact that it's pretty much just drug induced "deep" conversations mixed with Pendleton Ward nonsense and absurdity.

It's not really funny but it's nice to sit back and chill out to. I also really dig the art and music.

Anyone looking for an Adventure Time replacement should probably just go watch Bravest Warriors on YouTube.

He is one of the celebrity doctors who are downplaying the coronavirus outbreak.

A Doctor who is "an Addiction Medicine Specialist" that hosted a late night call in radio show locally in Los Angeles called Loveline. It was all about helping people with relationship problems. It went nationally syndicated and then eventually had a short lived MTV TV Show as well. He then hosted a pretty expoitative Reality Show featuring Celebs going to his rehab clinic. And now he does podcasts mostly with occasional "news" talking head appearances.

Most recently he's known as one of the famous Dr's who claimed Covid-19 was being blown out of proportion by "the media." Apparently he apologized for that and urged people to follow Dr Fauci's advice/instruction but the damage is done.

Well he sounds an absolute delight. Cheers, guys.

Finished this today. Overall really enjoyed this, especially the last three episodes. They start to tinker with the format a bit before it got too stale, and the conversations also really increased in "quality." Not that I hated it, but the drug ramblings in the first episode were a bit eyerolling at times.

But that last episode was very touching. Really recommend sticking with this one to the end.

Wow the last episode hit hard.

Such a bizarre concept to be greenlit for Netflix -- I'm glad it exists.
It was an enjoyable watch because of how weird it is.

3 episodes and I'm kinda disappointed. The disconnection between the animation and the dialogue is too big, so i am always trying to pay attention in one of them while ignoring the other. The first episode definitely needed more work in the animation, but looks like it was just in the pilot. I will watch more tomorrow, but it feels like a idea that needed more work.

Also, as a recommendation in the "animated podcast" category watch the Kirlian frequency on Netflix.

I was a little nonplussed at first but it gets better and better (and has an actual plot later on) - the last few episodes are truly beautiful

People not liking this are crazy. I love Wards animation style so it is such a joy to watch.

This show is great. I'm glad I didn't know Dr Drew was on the first episode or I wouldn't have watched but it's the worst episode so that checks out. I guess some of ya'll hate fun.

Wow! I love the animation, but this show is so Gen-X (which is probably why it was green lit)! The format is something I adjusted to after the first episode, but the instrumentalisation of Buddhism is some tried and true western pseudo-spirituality bullshit. Gospel is a very accurate part of the title. After Watching through, I hope this helps anyone who needs it; but I didn't, and that's okay.

I really enjoyed the first episode, but the topic and long-windedness of the second episode left me bored and my SO begging me to change it. The second episode was mostly a non-stop stream of consciousness with brief "yeah"s and "uh-huh"s from the interviewer.

I'm planning to get through the whole series, but that was really disappointing.

First episode didn't hold our interest here. It feels like some exec saw the intersection between fans of Joe Rogan interviews and Adventure Time, so they found someone loosely related to both to fuse the two together.

The problem is that these two mediums do exist and have countless examples that are actually successful, so instead of feeling new, this show feels like both a mismatch and a retreading. Shows like Adventure Time are successful because they tell engaging stories coupled with psychedelia. Audio interviews are readily available, have more interesting speakers, and are generally consumed more passively. Force the viewer to focus on both the visuals and droning dialogue simultaneously for 20 minutes and all you get is something discordant and annoying.

Dang, the setup made me think something more structured was afoot but finding out it's a series of podcasts given animation was a bummer. Only watched one episode but I have no experience with the people giving the source podcasts, so I found the subject matter not to my taste. Well, given it was released on 4/20, that seems on brand for the show to find an audience. Cheers but I'm out.

I am at episode 3 now and I really think this does not work that well.

All 3 episodes feel more like you just arrived at some snake oil convention and listen to the crazy ramblings of people there. I feel like the whole premise is great. Guy interviews people from different kinds of life (planets) about parts of their life. With a real narrative you can actually explore the same topics. Instead with the podcast bases, there is no structure. There are no real arguments. It is "Well in Buddhism uhm OTO yeah! right! And this is connected to the west! Remember Mesapotamia! Uhm yeah! Right!"

I enjoyed the show but the second half is really strong and the first episode is pretty weak.

Only three episodes in I like the *visual podcast* format its different and unique enough to hold my attention, the short topics that are conversed about and how they are talked about do however come across as alittle...Gen X (old millennial) for me like *woke* old dudes talking about progressive topics but in an outdated fashion.

I was intrigued by the concept, must the 'audio' portion took me out of the experience.

The conversations are an absolute chore to listen to, they seem like run-on sentences that never end. These conversations aren't entertaining, they aren't educational and they aren't deep.

This was my wife and I right here. I was ready to go and forced the first episode and while I enjoyed the visuals, it's basically a podcast that interrupts for a moment to say, die zombie!, or something similar. Just couldn't get into it at all

I may check this out as a friend who has pretty similar taste said the second half is far better than the first. I'll give it a shot this weekend and just try and burn through the fist half to get to the second.

Was hyped for it, but this is not for me. Will revisit when I have to make a best animated series of 2020 list

Yeah I'm done after the first episode. I actually mistook this for Roiland's new show and was excited to watch it. Then I realized it was Ward and was still excited, but what a waste of time. It was 20 minute run-on sentence rambling about stuff that a bunch of stoned podcasters would think is deep and then they just slap unrelated animation over it.

I watched the first two episodes and love it thus far. But it's the stuff/subjects I loved from Adventure Time, too.

The sad thing I feel is, that the animation actually works. There is a great show under the snake oil talk if you give it a narrative. And you can still add all those themes from the talks in it.

Let's take the second episode. Animationwise its about life and death and rebirth. Podcast wife it is about an old woman just telling her life experience, loosely connected to death, without any narrative or central theme.
You could have the main character still doing a podcast about the animal, what they think life means, what death is etc.

Watched 2, I'm in. Mixed about the disconnect between audio and video, sometimes its absurd and funny, other times I wish one would take more of a cue from the other.

The final episode was some powerful stuff. Anyone who dropped the show before needs to do themselves a favour and at least watch that.

Just finished it up and the last episode wrecked me. I love this show! I would encourage anyone to stick with it for the whole 8 episodes, maybe skip the first one.

I love the animation but yeah the podcast stuff isn't doing it for me. In episode three, I thought that they were going to have an actual story and then nope.

Watched the first two episodes and found myself zoning out during it. I think the animated podcast format is a solid idea, but so far the convos in the first two episodes just didn't grab me. Second one in particular did absolutely nothing for me with all the spiritual nonsense. I did enjoy the trippy visuals though, and I'll watch some more tonight because a friend of mine said last night that they cried a ton while watching the final ep so I'm curious to see that one.

The disconnection between the animation and the dialogue is too big, so i am always trying to pay attention in one of them while ignoring the other.

Yep, same here. I think it actively works against what they're going for. So much going on with the animation that you focus on it and end up zoning out and not hearing parts of the conversation.

I thought the episodes did a better job of merging what was happening on the screen to the dialogue going on. Granted it's all in a very metaphorical way (a line from the show is literally "are you a metaphor?").

As mentioned by others, that last episode destroyed me. Very beautiful.

Adventure Time, the show people kept invoking when talking about Midnight Gospel, is fun. This is deeply stoned pseudo-intellectual waffling set to trippy animation.

It's actually a very good show, it just seems people wanted it to be something it isn't trying to be.

This show is pretty wild. Might be the closest representation of hallugenics i've seen in TV.

The first episode was such an amazing sensory overload. So much that I couldn't be bothered to keep up on the second episode. Then I got sucked and hooked back into the third.

I don't know. This show is definitely not a bingeable one for me. Really feels like it needs to be digested in pieces in order to reflect on the "trip" it takes you on.

I like the concept though. Its like a cross between Rick and Morty's Channel surfing and some sort of video game-ish feel. Everything as a whole is kind of mindblowing. I actually love the metaphorical side of the visuals. It leaves a lasting impression to compliment the audible side.

I started this rolling my eyes a bit at some of the conversations, but the incredible art, the animation, and just the sheer lunacy of the things happening on the screen were a joy to watch so I kept going.

Just finished it now and by the end some of the episodes were actually really beautiful and I'm not talking about the visuals.

I loved this show.

I love the visuals but I fucking hate the podcasting format. Granted, they react from time to time to what is happening but their generally detached attitude is annoying to no end. I would digest much better their ramblings if it came from zany characters instead of actual humans talking in a microphone. Is this racist to say this is « White People Nonsense: the Show »? I finished the episode with the pirate cats and will power through the end but man, what a mess...

Netflix did not market it as an animated podcast, but as a normal narrative tv show.
Even the trailer and the description makes it sound like its a "normal" show.
But it's not as simple as "an animated podcast," that's really reductive.

There actually are segments that are pure narrative recorded specifically for the show that are congruent to what is happening on screen. Sure, it's treated more like a framing device, but it's there and genuinely pretty funny, too.

Visually, there's an entire story being told complete and unto itself. An adventure through a weird alternate-reality freakshow ecosystem. You could watch the show on mute and appreciate it purely for that if you wanted to, which is cool. But i do think the conversations the characters have also add to the humor simply by being absurd in the context of what's happening on-screen.
