Never played the original on Wii and I want to try it but there's just no way I'm shelling out 60 bones for it.

I'll wait for cheaper prices, new, used, whatever the case is.

This revisionist history is so bizarre to me. Where is this "silent majority" who loved this game? How come they never turn up for these threads?
Yesterday on Twitter, I said Skyward Sword is good and someone responded that I probably love Rush Limbaugh too.

I don't talk with people who hate this game because it seems, to them, that anybody that likes it is deficient and bad somehow. It's not just a Twitter thing, it's not just a yesterday thing, I have long gotten tired of participating in the "WOW THIS GAME IS A WAR CRIME LMAO" discourse around it.

There's plenty to criticize about Skyward Sword, and people should definitely know what they're getting themselves into with it (heavy/nearly exclusive dungeon and puzzle focus, linear, integral collection and stealth sequences, backtracking, etc).
Then we agree!

Otherwise maybe you missed the context of what I was replying to, but I'm not suggesting there aren't hyperbolic people, which of course happens with any major release that isn't as well received. Glad you gave SS a shot and enjoyed it. I plan to do the same in July.

I really wish the Joy-Cons went up yesterday. I was refreshing every site like mad after the Direct but instead they just randomly go up in the middle of the day today unannounced so shithead scalpers can rob people.

Damn, they are selling out fast AF. I think the issue is there is no quantity limit(at least not 1)so people buying a lot to resell maybe.

In general you should be following wario64 on twitter for game deals and he posted both GameStop and Best Buy when they went live
Just make a anon twitter account and put post notifications for wario64

They really should sell this for lik 45$. Now it would be a great way to experience past Zelda games. Putting it at the same price as Botw 2 is kinda silly

Fucking thank you! The discourse about this game puts me off of any discussion. There are also people who say one should finally admit to the objective truth that the game is not only the worst mainline Zelda game, but just bad overall and only got good reviews because "Zelda". Otherwise, you are a stupid fanboy or you just like horrendous games.

Hoped to pick up the joy cons, but not going to refresh wario64 indefinitely just to grab a pair. Oh well.

Went back up on Best Buy for half a second and managed to snag a pair. Hopefully my order doesn't get canceled. Fuck scalpers, regardless.

Seriously I don't know whose dog Skyward Sword killed but we've got people here saying it's "ugly as sin" and threads going up just for the chance to let more people trash it. It isn't even criticism, it's like a grudge and it's baffling. And if you try to call out that toxic shit you just get dogpiled until you give up. So I just go and enjoy my games and hit ignore on nearly every thread about it instead.

Skyward Sword is definitely the worst 3D Zelda. That said it isn't a bad game, just lacking overall with some frustrating design decisions.

I really enjoyed the dungeons in SS though, and those to me are the heart of Zelda. So I quite liked the game.

That said, I'm not repurchasing for $60. That's just laughable.

Nah TWW is the worst 3D Zelda, that ocean was so awful, repetitive and boring. Art style is cute at times and makes me nostalgic, but I've got to admit the game is a bit crap.

I've never played Skyward sword. I did play Twilight Princess. Since the Direct aired I've seen a large amount of sentiment like the following:

  • They ported the worst Zelda
  • So glad this can be played without the waggle.
  • This game is too linear

I don't normally put too much faith in user comments I think the level of emotion people put into their opinions online distorts how true they actually are, but I can't help but see a lot of people focussing on the same set of flaws.

As someone that has never complained about 'waggle' (I presonally find most of its uses more immersive) and as someone who does'nt mind linearity in games. Can anyone anyone expand on what makes this game soo disliked? Is it a personal preference thing? Is it just some people with loud opinions? Or is it genuinely really bad?
Skyward Sword is a genuinely great game. It just leans very heavily on the "dungeon" and "puzzle" aspects of the series, to the point that most of the overworld is essentially a giant outdoor dungeon. It has some pacing issues as well, but they're not deal-breakers. I highly recommend checking it out, you seem interested enough in the game.

Funny how different perspectives can be on Zelda. I think the worst Zelda is still a great game, but I just didn't enjoy TP all that much. WW and SS are top tier for me having played all main Zelda games to completion.

Sorry, have to disagree. Wind Waker, as much as I like it, has only mediorcre dungeons imo and I don't like Twilight Princess art style and overworld.

Yep, I think that's the correct description. It's completely linear, with even the overwerld more a less a dungeon before the actual dungeon.

It's insane how much heavy lifting the artstyle in WW does. Without it, there just isn't much there to celebrate.

I did like exploring the ocean more than Hyrule in TP, or whatever you call exploration in SS.

For me Twilight Princess is easily the worst 3D Zelda, but still a great 8.0-8.5 game. All of the other 3D Zeldas have a strong unique identity, whereas TP felt very derivative of OOT while failing to match up to its greatness.

Skyward Sword has some amazing dungeons and visual design. I also appreciated that they tried something different with the motion control, because while they weren't perfect they did a good job of making every combat encounter feel more like a puzzle. IMO combat has always been one of the weakest aspects of the 3D Zelda games, so I really appreciated that this game took a step forward in this regard. The overly incessant Fi pings and repeat tutorialization were definitely annoying, but I don't know that they were all that much worse than Navi or Midna tbh.

I will say this: Skyward sword has incredible dungeons, and i would love to play them isolated.

Everything else is insufferable, overly long, and repeats itself it's like they were trying to test your patience. I don't even know why they felt like a 50h game needed that much padding.

Yeah definitely, I get what you're saying and where you're coming from. I was just kind of trying to support the idea that the more hyperbolic negativity has been, in my perception at least, much more prominent than maybe you had perceived.

I hope you enjoy it when you try again. I think with the change in controls, it will be a lot easier to push through the beginning and get to the meat of the game. There's a great cast of characters and some of the best dungeon and puzzle design in the series waiting for you.

Liking Skyward Sword or not is kind of an half full vs half empty glass matter.

If you absolutely loathe cheap, mandatory filler content like fetch quests, escort missions, forced backtracking, forced stealth missions, then it's just going to be one of the most obnoxious game you ever played.
If you don't mind about that then you'll like it because it has good dungeons and a lot of fun quality content as well.

That's about it.

I like mosing around Windfall Island but the rest of the game is rather boring outside that. It picks up when you visit the Tower of the gods.. underwater castle, meet ganon, but becomes boring again after that, until the final boss.

Yup, when I was kid and found about the old Hyrule, I thought that now the game will start. It actually became more boring and finished. My most disappointing game ever. It only has the looks.

That's BOTW for me as well, half full, half empty, depending on my mood. Great world, crap dungeons and underwheming story.

Tbh I already played SS in HD on day one of the Wii release, in a higher resolution than what's offered here.

Bought the Gold Wiimote edition, arrived home, dumped it and played it entirely on Dolphin in 1080p. Those were the days. :lol

The only redeeming factor here is 60fps and I hope it holds it well.

Was in a meeting and missed the joycon at BB and GS. Here's hoping Amazon or Target come through, otherwise import city. Sigh.

Is there any way I can get a notification for the Joy-Cons going live on the Nintendo UK Store or GAME? Do Nintendo UK usually tweet stuff like that? I think Wario64 only tweets for US links.

Awesome. I'm actually interested in trying the motion controls again, but it'll be nice to have the button alternative

Hoping for those obvious QoL improvements, too. Should be a lay-up for Nintendo but they often miss those.

This image is soooooooo on point. To put this in perspective:
I got to see the first Zelda Orchestra performance..
and buy this same version of the Skyward Sword with Wiimote+ at the event ..
near enough this exact price..

Meanwhile now, I'd have to buy a £50 game and then the £60 controllers for the same thing - and I don't get the London Philharmonic Orchestra performance...
hahaha

Puts into further perspective why I don't play primarily on Nintendo platoforms anymore beyond a small amount of titles. Sigh... but it works for Nintendo so it will keep happening. Good for the folks happy to throw money repeatedly at games they already own, or consider this to be value for money as a first time purchase. Ridiculous

Agreed.
Like, it's a fine game, high-quality in many regards (as expected of Nintendo), but it's so weak relative to the other 3D Zelda games in a number of ways.
The dungeons are mediocre (too streamlined for my taste), the forsaken fortress stealth section is annoying, the combat encounters feel extra repetitive (the "parry" attack makes every fight feel the same), the act of sailing is laborious, the uniform ocean overworld gets dull pretty quickly, the boss battles are largely unmemorable outside of Gohma, and the stuff created by it's rushed development (the Triforce Quest and missing dungeons) sucks no matter what version it's in.
Wind Waker feels overrated as hell to me.
And I'll never personally understand the absolute hard-on that this forum in particular has for the game.

I hate to be that person...but it feels like SS really was overestimated by critics, whether intentionally or not. I like SS, Zelda is probably my favourite series and Nintendo is definitely my favourite developer, but when it comes to this game, for some reason the reviewers were blind to the flaws. As someone who has scoffed at the "Belda" argument and loves Edge magazine's journalism, that infamous, rare 10 from them does seem absurd in hindsight. They are often charged with having a Nintendo bias, and as a Nintendo fan it sometimes feels good to have a magazine with such clout hold Nintendo games in such high regard, but maybe there's some truth to it. In no way did the game deserve a 10 from them, nor did it deserve 10s from industry heavyweights like IGN, Eurogamer and Game Informer.

At the end of the day, reviews mean jack shit. Not in an anti-intellectual way - critics perform a vital role - but they have no bearing on your personal enjoyment of a game. But it will be very interesting to see how these outlets review the game 10 years later. Will the well documented flaws have seeped into new reviewers' critiques via cultural osmosis, or are the game's many detractors simply a vocal minority?
