I saw a lot of 25-30 hours to finish it.
Most reviews seem to have it at 20+ hours while others have it at 30+.
I finished in 30 hours.
Thanks all :) I'm still going to try to get it done in 3 days. 10 hours a day seems crazy but I think I can do it, next weekend is going to be Last of Us focused then I can jump into the conversation here :)

It has a few GOAT moments so I can see why you like it so much. That chapter 6 ending was chef's kiss worthy.
Arthur ends up being one of the best characters to ever grace a video game. Just incredible progression, and far more nuanced than what you typically see in a game of that scale. He felt real. That carried much of my love for that game, other than the beautiful scenery and wonderful music.

Which is crazy because I was super disappointed when RDR2 was first shown and I thought he looked like some generic ass cowboy.

Metacritic has 35 reviews 100, from 63,really impressive, those 70 is holding it back from a 97 ,Metacritic still missing some perfect scores

Like I said, I'm very curious to see it all for myself. Basically to see if all those years of witnessing ridiculous fatalities in the Mortal Kombat series have numbed me to gratuitous violence. Though I suspect the violence in this game will still be disturbing if the focus was to make it look as realistic as possible.
I mentioned this in the review - MK and Doom revel in how ridiculous they can get, but TLOU2 makes everything seem 'clumsy' in its efforts. Nothing feels clean when you land a blow or fire a shot, it's messy and it's brutal, but it works

Are you comparing sexual abuse being portrayed vividly in a TV show compared to killing a dog made of pixels? Not really comparable. What you said can trigger horrendous flashbacks for some.

And I'm sure killing pixelated dogs is sad for some, I can get it...but I just don't really understand it. If you are that offended or affected by it just don't play it.

It is clear that they aren't just talking about the dog but about the level of violence in the game in general. As games approach photorealism I don't see why they should be exempt from criticism regarding violence.

As for your view that if you are offended or affected by something you shouldn't comment on it, is just plain dumb.

The criticism towards exaggerated violence and arguably unjustified, comical brutal human behaviour comes not from obliviousness to systemic and heirarchal authoritarianism and the dehumanisation it has lead to in human civilisation, but the lack of evidence to suggest humans regress to murderous, animalistic monsters in Naughty Dog's survivalist premise. It opens a real conversation as to whether such framing of humans, that are inherently communal, is actually believable or instead outrageously exaggerated, and whether or not that gives brevity to the portrayal of questionable violence and human actions or instead presents as superficial torture porn that provides an incredibly bland, surface level misunderstanding of human behaviour masquerading as insight and depth.

I haven't played the game and I dont know. But that'll make for interesting post mortoms.

surely humans can be both? communal and completely vicious murderous fuckheads. witness any nation in history that's committed self-slaughter. completely united, hand in hand, to try and wipe out the human race because of some trick of light and sound.

we're scary fucks sometimes, and sometimes our best traits turn against us.

Alright I am done with these reviews. They are all kind of spoiling the game. It seems like Ellie is the villain in this game.

Regarding soundtrack: I dont know if its as punchy as the one for the first game if you listen to it outside of the game, but its beautiful. I will surely listen to it for a long time (I listen to the first one to this day), but let me just say this. In game, it works a lot better then the soundtrack for the first one. It brought me to tears multiple times (ofc, along with the cutscenes). The emotions that this game invokes in you are just beyond 99% of every other media that I experienced in my life, be it games, movies, tv show or books. It fucks you up. And I loved it. Neil and Hailey are fucking Gods and I cant wait for the next story they write. I am way more hyped for tlou from HBO after playing Part II and knowing that these guys dont fucking mess around.
Normally I don't really care about the music, but the first game and Death Stranding changed my mind.

I haven't really played RDR 2, but I hear good things about its music too.

I will hammer it tho.
This is the bleakest and the most uncomfortable game probably to ever release with such budget. First one feels like happy go lucky Uncharted in comparison.

You've seen this movie?
It's this in video game form.

Just like when the PS4 was coming into view, the last of us comes out to remind us all why Sony first party is top tier.

The Polygon review is enough to dissuade me from buying this at launch, it confirms a lot of the fears I had with the recent marketing. I loved the first game. It was harsh, but also perfectly balanced with real beautiful moments and endearing characters. This just seems relentlessly cruel just for the sake of it. I'm not in any hurry to beat a dog with a pipe.

I'm already sad for the hate Maddy Myers is going to recieve for being so honest about her experience with the game and sticking out. It's a brave review to post, she must have known how it was going to be recieved.

Serious question: why hone in on a review that tone dead (I mean, "we're better than Naughty Dog thinks we are"? Seriously) when there are tons of reviews stating the opposite of your concerns?

I was expecting 93-94 due to the violent and depressing nature of the world and story, hence a greater likelihood of lower rated outliers.

This gen it's seemingly been increasingly difficult for violent mature games to reach these sorts of critical heights outside of the open-world ambition of Rockstar titles, and I think some are underselling just how much of an incredible achievement it is for ND to have hit this sort of critical acclaim all over again.

Hell, TLOU2 is now the second highest mature (age rating wise) game this entire gen.

In order of ratings.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - 97
The Last of Us 2 - 96
God of War - 94
Half Life Alyx -93
Persona 5 - 93
Metal Gear Solid V - 93
Uncharted 4 - 93
Bloodborne - 92
The Witcher 3 - 92

Not surprised at the scores. Also, not surprised at some of the low scores, either.

I'm posting my review tomorrow, and if anyone has questions (that I can answer without breaking embargo rules), shoot!

The Last of Us 2 will most likely be loved by most, but there will be others who won't like some of its design choices -- and these complaints are valid, and not nitpicking in my opinion based on my experience playing it.

A lot of people were really harsh on Arthur for some irrational reason when Rockstar revealed the game. He and Geralt are THE open world protagonists of this gen. The lines 'I'm afraid' and 'I gave you all I had' were amazing.

I really hope The Last of Us 2 has some quality lines like that. The first game had a few so.

This is reviewing amazinly but no one should feel surprised that some can't take or enjoy the violence and brutality

I think this game will be discussed about for a LOT of reasons amongst the general gaming community. It'll be a lot of interesting opinions surrounding it and its themes.
If the game sells millions like the first, it will absolutely be fascinating to see how the audience at-large reacts to it. Pretty unprecedented in the medium.

Love your post but the leaps in framing humans as being selfish monsters is because we are already in every sense selfish monsters. Hurricane Katrina and others disasters have demonstrated that when left on our own with no help we will protect those closest to us and then if things get bad enough have the capacity to look after only ourselves as well. Neil isn't building his narrative around some wildly unproven theory. I'm sure you have read Night by Elie Wiesel but it's heartbreaking not just because the Holocaust was one of the most tragic events in history but when driven to such extremes he saw daughter against mother. Father against son and people abandoning all sense of morality for survival.

Totally fine with critical reviews but I totally want to live in that ideal world the Polygon reviewer is imagining.

Because shit has been BAD for us.

Also neat to read different reactions to the story. Cuz that is art ya know.

Excuse me what

Uncharted 4 was uncomfortably dour to begin with

The ending was such a cop out and completely at odds with what the game was trying to go for.
Nate should have ended up alone on a massive pile of treasure or something. Also his brother shpuld have definitely died. Instead 4 games of wanton destruction and genocide levels of murder end with "he is happy now lol"

Seems like the one constant, even in the good reviews, is that the player has no agency over the characters.. I still think ND would be a better movie studio but that's just me.
Studio literally makes games of the year frequently and their gameplay is lauded the world over and you think they would make a better movie studio? Troll harder.

i remember reading on grantland (RIP) this article about the first one, published in '13. https://grantland.com/features/tom-bissell-naughty-dog-latest-game-last-us/

From the little I know about game development, I can all but guarantee that the amount of work required to make The Last of Us is basically unimaginable to anyone outside game development. Games with this amount of detail and polish are possible only when dozens of men and women voluntarily elect to damage themselves and their lives for the entertainment benefit of strangers. To work on something — even a video game — for 12 to 15 hours a day for a year is not enjoyable or fulfilling. I have no doubt that to make this game, hair was grayed, health was ravaged, friendships were tested, and marriages were strained. Before The Last of Us, the same could be said of the Tomb Raider reboot or BioShock Infinite or L.A. Noire or Red Dead Redemption or any number of other ambitious titles. What I'm saying is that these glorious games are, in real and measurable ways, born of human misery.

and of course in the years subsequent we gained more insight into what happens at naughty dog.
i have no doubt it's true of this one, too. a brilliant game born of human misery. the critics seem to love it, certainly. and what of the human misery component?

can i in good conscience support something like that? tough question for me. maybe others are indifferent to this but it's not so easy to forget for me.

Not to sound bleak but there is enough evidence of humans being muderous, animalistic monsters in the world right now. I personally believe the only thing exaggerated is the sheer amount of people that turn out that way in the game.
