Fascinating that Polygon and Eurogamer basically sit exactly opposite on the violence/meaning issue. Polygon says they do nothing with it and it's misery porn; EG says, To call this misery porn is a misunderstanding. Very interesting.

Seems like the one constant is that the player has no agency over their character.. I still think ND would be better at making movies than games.
Not everything has to be create-your-own-story with dialogue wheel and all that shite. I wanna see what story ND wants to tell instead of them trying to create an illusion that my story is unique and different from all the rest.

Looks like everyone was right about the violence, brutality and nihilistic tone not rubbing some reviewers the right way.

I voted 90-94.

Its hard to think it would be less than 90. Seems most ppl voting did too.

How come the metacritic score page has no score on it? But you guys are talking about it being 94 on metacritic?

Seems like the Gamespot review highlights some of the complaints I had about the first game. That all the really character developing stuff is out of the players control and that cutscenes forces these rather shocking actions on the player. It's how Naughty Dog always handles their game design and I'm glad there are more people seeing an issue with it. Violence will ALWAYS be more impactful if there is an actual choice to avoid it at all times. Trying to sneak pastand spare everyone in gameplay sequences feels pointless if the characters are gonna act out anyway in-between those sequences.
That's valid criticism, but Naughty Dog games are not choice driven. They are heavily directed experiences, using gameplay and cinematic techniques to tell a story. That's a storytelling style that isn't inferiour to more choice driven ones imo, it's just a different creative choice.

Even though it is true the most important deaths are in cut scènes, I don't think this story would've worked as well if it was a tv-show or movie, but due to the NDA it is impossible to explain why.

Game is absolutey, disgustingly brutal to the point of nausea. If you are not spoiled, it's that hard hitting. If you were spoiled, it is even worse with all pieces in.

reading between the lines of what i'm reading in the reviews, this game is gonna make for super interesting discussion once we all sit down and play it ourselves, especially with certain things...

Naughty Dog certainly have a vision and message they wish to impart. But I guess its effectiveness will differ for each person that plays through it themselves.

And I appreciate that we're self-moderating the reaction in here. No sense trashing outlets for not giving 10s or whatever when none of us have actually played it ourselves. And even if we had, it's dumb to say someone's opinions are outright wrong without discussing in detail what you even find objectionable.

Keep that cheerleading crap out of here

Skill Up did NOT like that game lol

I skipped through his review and he evokes comparisions to the new star wars trilogy and the 8th season of game of thrones.

He feeds a certain userbase that wanted to hate the game because of the leaks. Sad to see that he can't be more professional.

Nobody needs to like the game but the framing of his review alone look like big red flags for me.

Uncharted 4 could have done with a dose of this nihilism honestly.

Might enjoy Tlou2 more than the first going off the reviews, hopefully it does actually play well this time.

Seems like all the less than 10 reviews are people who are unsure on how they feel about the game.

Surely shouldn't be allowed to review it then...

My only thought with all the reveals and stuff has been do we really need to hear these people gargle to death?

I get that we are at an unprecedented time for dev and fidelity, but having listened to people gargle and die in real life I just have the perception that this philosophy of "bleak as fuck til the end" could have been notched down a little without actually compromising anything artistically.

With that said I'm going to play the game and see how I feel about it, but thats been my impression the whole time.

5610873019273 reviews with 10/10 scores and like 4-5 reviews with 8/10 scores "the game is just ok...too much violence i can't handle it *proceeds to play Doom*"
Never change...

After reading through the Gamespot review, I can see myself feeling the exact same way she did when playing. I'm almost scared to play it.
I really want to like this game, but I can't detach emotionally from what's happening on screen. Still gonna keep my preorder, hoping I can manage.

Maddy Myers at Polygon was not a fan.

Haven't read the full review but I disagree with this quote. Without elaborating too much, certain characters can't see the bigger picture because they're utterly obsessed -- that's kinda the point of the plot. It's about the cost of that obsession, and was it all worth it.

Also, not everyone is as irredeemable as this quote suggests.

Anyway, interesting perspective.

The game is getting so many 10/10s and this is your take without even playing the game?
What take? Are people really this insecure lol

I said that it's getting great scores. I was of the opinion that TLOU1 should've remained standalone long before these reviews released. Nothing to do with the quality of the game. I'm just not that excited about it, but will play it anyway because I trust ND.

No. Being a game does not mean that you have to be in control of the story. Sometimes it's about partaking in actions that you would never see yourself doing in real life.
