I wish I didn't watch Jeremy Jahns review of the game. It's a spoiler free review, but he spoils a very pivotal aspect of the game, that was never advertised, nonchalantly. For anyone who has yet to buy the game, please be careful with watching any reviews even if they say non-spoiler.

Anyone else just going to play it once and drop it until the remaster comes out?

I don't think I can go through it twice back to back. Also I am hoping to forget some of the events that happen so replaying it in a a year or more from now will feel fresh again :)

I'm in the second half and I can't see what gets people so divided about it? I haven't found a thing I dislike yet.

I loved the game, and thought the 2nd half was better then the first. I can see why people are so divided about it (
certain people do not like abby no matter what, less focus on ellie, etc)

Even with all of those complaints I enjoyed it. I actually like Abby as a character, and I thought the 2nd half was more compelling. I wasn't even upset that I didn't get to play as Ellie, because I was intrigued at the new perspective.

The game is roughly 25-30 hours.

Did I miss the discourse of percent remaining of gameplay in other games, or is this one special for some reason?
i saw this with gow a lot. people are used to 10-12 hour games from Naughty Dog and SSM. When you go from 12 hours to 30 hours, people start wondering just what the hell is going on.

Just finished.

Frankly, a bit disappointed.

It's hard to explain exactly why. I think my main problem is that it is way too long for its own good. I think the game does not have the good ideas it takes to justify a 25/30 hours experience, both regarding gameplay sequences and story.

Still a 8/10 game though with great graphics, gameplay, level-design and sound design. The studio has crazy talents.

This game is so intense, I have to make frequent breaks when I'm playing.

Parts of it literally have me scared. Like an unnerving sense of fear.
I feel the same way, I've been playing 1 to 3 hours most days, and I don't think I could handle more. It's intense, and even when you're just exploring it can sometimes feel uneasy.

And wow, I just realized I'm taking my sweet time with this. I just passed the

stalkers section (which I sure wasn't a fan of, but I still think the Hotel Basement section in Part I was worse, at least the first time you play them)

that makes me believe I'm still in the middle of Day 2 and I've clocked almost 15 hours. At this rate, this is going to take me 40h+ to finish. Damn.

I finished the game, HOLY SHIT.

It's a masterpiece, no doubt. I think its my all time favortite now too....I need to digest all the feelings now. On the end, I was suffering from anxiety with the end history of characters.

It's my Game of the Generation for sure, easily.

One more thing, the scope and ambition of this game is unrivaled.

At start of second half I assume

I'm not sure what I feel like having to play three days as Abby. I'm fine with getting her perspective but it's not like I care for her character or friends at the moment. It might come together quite well though. And having to start over with upgrades although it's other stuff and such.

Dogs are a great addition, they really force you to stay on your toes. Enemies do a pretty good job of searching anyway, but the dogs add another layer. They really make me panic, I typically try and take the dogs out first.

Then tonight I killed the owner before the dog and wow, that was sad. Was not prepared for a sad whimpering dog lying by its dead owner. I killed it anyway, but I felt a little bad.

Combat is so good. Followed the progress of a WLF in an adjacent house in listen mode so I was perfectly placed, bow drawn, to shoot them right in the face as soon as they opened the door. Satisfying.

Also, I've said it before but the enemy chatter; ie they have names, anger, fear, distress etc is just perfect.

I just had my first encounters versus humans.

That combat is so incredibly dynamic. The fights are messy and force you to improvise. Playing on Survivor every bullet is such a valuable resource so you don't want to waste them. But because of the messiness you often have to use them to save your life.

I'm usually a sucker for getting encounters done with perfect stealth. But that feels incredibly hard to do, and it feels more true to the game to surrender yourself to the fights if they happen to break out. Which is fun, because it also forces me to use the tools better. I even started using the bombs, which I never touch in games.

20 hours in, I'm absolutely loving the second half.

It's such a great change in pacing. A lot lighter on the exploration which I'd had just about enough of after the third day with Ellie. Lots of varied locales as usual, and some great encounters that make perfect use of Abby's strength.
Also, not that I had much of a problem with Abby before, but I just finished Day 1 with her and she's fantastic. So is Owen. Naughty Dog's ability to create quality characters is unparalleled in this industry. Can't wait to learn more about Lev !

I think this is the most important part of the whole game, that it can evoke so many different feelings like not many games can. Even for people who didn't like the second half i think it triggered some sort of feelings for them (hate .. haha ;)).
After Ellie lost the fight with Abby with a ?broken? arm there is this hard cut to black and then this happy-family-farm thing. The whole time i was thinking, that this can't be real they are pulling a "The Descent" move (if you know the movie) where Ellie wakes up every moment and is still lying on the ground half dead. Then it hit me. Are those the same feelings Ellie is going through? Living at this farm, always thinking about the fight and not knowing what is real? So we are experiencing the same emotions like a video game character? I don't know if that's intended, but for me that was mindblowing.

If it wasn't for people spoiling things, I'd have felt the same way. (late game discussion here:)
Even then, because that sequence was so happy and joyful, I was like, "this can't be real." Not that Ellie was still on the theater floor, imagining this, but that it was maybe a dream sequence, and we'd cut to her and Dina and the baby in some hellish situation again. There was this growing sense of dread, much like the beginning of the game, where I knew this piece wasn't going to last. I was half expecting enemies to show up at the farm and raze it to the ground, but I also knew that, because of the spoilers, that the story was far from over, and that Ellie was going to go after Abby again. I also want to take this moment to express my awe at how fucking GORGEOUS that farmland was. Like, I sat with JJ looking at the fields and the sun for quite a bit. Just a beautiful location. I was just floored by the ND artists and the art direction. I wanted to run around the fields some more and explore it. Then I was like, wait, there's probably tons of infected out there, hence the gate (which she hilariously only locked with a bolt? lmao)

I was starting to get into this and much more so than the first game but they pissed all of that away with the second part. Really feel like quitting this and youtubing the interesting parts.
Take it slowly. Second half is great and totally worth it. Those first few hours are tough, I know, but after that it picks right back up and holy shit it is great.

I might play it again on NG+ and then wait for the PS5 version (if it happens). It was the same for me with the first game, I played it on PS3 twice I think and then on PS4 like 6 more times or so lol.

A that's too bad with the spoilers, i tried to avoid everything.. like not ready threads/comments/twitch chats ...

I remember it beeing not very colorfull, everything was very brown and beige. Maybe that was also intentional.

But you better not think about that farm too much :D ... i mean , two girls and a baby live there for 1 year with only a fence, while Jackson needed armed patrols, guards, 30ft walls ... these girls can defend themselves but not while they sleep.

Okay, start of second half and after that downtime chapter I'm really invested into Abby and Owen and her friends too actually. I totally get them, and it's kind of the same deal with Ellie. I love them as a couple and now I wonder what made him and Meg go for a child I'm really curios how the second half can beat the first half, the first half has been incredible already.

Fuck that I know how it ends. I'm invested in these characters and I'm not gonna let a spoiler ruin the experience of it all unfolding and coming together for me.

The 2nd half being the best part of the game will be the consensus in a couple of years.

Bookmark this.
Yup, I agree.

The second half contains better combat encounters imo and had a horror feel to it at times. The first half however has one of the most heartbreaking moments in video game history and also one of the most beautiful moments.

I finished it.

Overall it is a solid game with great audiovisuals, but my reception to it just went up and down like a rollercoaster throughout the playthrough. It has a lot of good parts, but it is simply too overlong for its own good and at times overindulgent with mediocre flow.

I may revisit it later with a 60 FPS update on PS5. But right now I uninstalled it and prefer the first game.

While I can handle gore and violence in most video games and horror/slasher movies, I've never been a fan when said violence devolves into painful bouts of torture porn. I needed to take long breaks to calm down and process what I've seen after the introduction and it was overwhelming, so I don't know if I can handle the rest of the game if it continues to get progressively intense/bleak.

Yeah I felt pretty similar. Although I really enjoyed the gameplay and presentation. The story and pacing just couldn't keep up with the first one for me. There's still some threads that left me hanging, so I certainly wouldn't mind a third one.

Well, finished the game. The ending is so good, i loved it. One of the (if not the...) best game i´ve ever played. Im gonna wait for the PS5 upgrade to do another run.
