Just finished watching the Hash Slinging House on a Haunted Hill, really good show from a great director but reviews overblown how much of a horror series this really was.

The best way to describe this show would be as a gothic family drama rather than a straight horror show.

I liked the emotional core of the final episode and how it tied the more metaphysical elements into the traditional ghost story.

Nell explaining how ghosts are able to view time non-linearly, and how this let her experience everything that her family went through and thus realizing they all were suffering just as bad. I thought that was beautiful.

I just finished it up. I loved the whole thing a lot and didn't have the issues with the ending that some others on here did. I still agree that episodes 4-6 are the high point in the series, those are some fantastic episodes. If I had a complaint, it would be the character of Poppy. I don't want to get into spoilers, but basically, I just felt like her character was too over the top and felt out of place like she felt like something from AHS. I understand the need for her character, but I think it could have been toned down a lot.

All and all though, I loved the story and the characters. I also think it's a wonderfully shot show, with episode 6 obviously be the stand out when it comes to that. I would be down for another series of this next Halloween if they do it. I don't want a direct sequel, but an anthology series could work.

Also, I knew the young version of the dad looked familiar but I couldn't figure it out, I just figured he was just one of those actors you see in stuff from time to time. I looked at his IMDB though and saw it was Elliott from E.T. and it blew my mind.

Agree with all this. I liked the ending as well, and thought Poppy was a bit over the top.

Watched episodes 4 and 5 yesterday and it was pretty good although there is barely any horror in those. Gonna watch 6 and 7 today.

I was hoping to finish ep 10 last night but didn't get round to it. Tonight I'm away for work staying in a supposedly haunted hotel so I figured it would be a really good idea to watch it tonight instead.

Just finished it last night, great show. I was interested initially in the horror aspects of it, but the family drama really drew me in a lot more then I was expecting to. I'll totally rewatch it sometime, if only for the background ghosties.

Watched Episode 5 last night, definitely my favorite so far. Nell is just very clearly a more defined and likeable characters than the others (which makes the events of the episode even sadder, both from a storyline perspective and a "do I have to go back to the other characters?" perspective).

Her story is just really tragic, and I loved the return to the most haunting image of the entire show so far to me: Nell dancing gracefully, alone in an empty, evil house, thinking that she's finally with her husband and family. It's harrowing in a way the rest of the show hasn't really hit for me.

That being said, the whole idea of the "bent neck lady" and how the episode played out made the ending of the episode pretty obvious. It was still a unique way of doing that particular scare though.

Victoria Pedretti I guess is an unknown, but holy shit will she get work after this. Her portrayal of sleep paralysis is perfect and terrifying, and she totally nails the fear and joy of the last 10 minutes of the episode. It's perfection.

Bit more info on the hotel I'm staying in tonight - it's one of the oldest hotels in England, parts of the building date back to the 12th century. It's based in an area known as Tombland. Royals have stayed there. People have been murdered there. There have been numerous spooky sightings, many of a former maid dressed in grey followed by the smell of lavender, and also of a former mayor of the city seen in the courtyard shaking his head vigorously.

I'm not sleeping tonight.

According to the cast in some interviews, it was Pedretti's first role out of drama school, though she does have a couple credits on IMDB before.

Finally finished this last night. Gotta say, I was a bit disappointed with the back half of the season, after such an awesome first 4-5 episodes. The show took a turn after the episode called The Eulogy, at least for me. Everything scary or creepy was starting to get stripped away but by bit, until there was nothing left by the end. They also relied way to heavily on bad jump scares. This would have worked so much better as a movie now that I've had time to think about it.

Spoilers:
the first 2-3 episodes were perfect. The characters were compelling and it just the perfect amount of creepy/scary scenes. Theo was by far my favorite, but by the end her "power" was just pointless. It didn't end up adding to the show at all lol, after she discovered what that foster dad was doing.

But after episode 5, anything scary was either explained to the point where it wasn't scary, or they just stopped even trying to frighten. The scariest scene in the whole show for me was when the dad went to wake up the oldest son on their final night there. When he was telling him not to open his eyes I was on the edge of my seat trying my best not to look lol. But then they had to explain that scene too!

I admit it was a wonderfully crafted show. But it started out as a horror show, and ended up being a show about grief and loss by the end.

Finished it last night. Overall I really enjoyed it but like with most horror films (esp. ghost ones) I thought the ending was pap.
As soon as ghosts start talking about their feelings or amassing in heavy makeup groups then the illusion is shattered.

Watched episode 1 last night and kinda enjoyed it. For the most part it's poorly acted, messy in terms of sequencing and I can't imagine they're stretching this story over hours and hours and hours of episodes. It would probably make a decent feature length film with the fluff cut out. But I understand the age calls for quantity over quality.

The last spook was pretty well done, I'll admit.

But it's the season and I'm just looking for something spooky to watch with my wife so we'll probably keep going.

You're damn right I got those same vibes. I haven't read the book so my initial reaction was to think Flanagan ripped her off but later I figured maybe they were pulling from the same source material.

Also, people should play Anatomy.
Oh fuck, that's why it sounded so familiar. I now do wonder if there's some philosophy of houses out there.
It turns out they must be pulling from the same source material. I just checked Anatomy's readme file, and it straight up includes a dedication to "Mrs. Shirley Jackson."

Watched first ep last night. It's good and we'll finish it but I'm kinda disappointed it's an ensemble show with all these different personalities coming together. Wanted something more straightforward I guess with a single family.

Question... is this show and every other new Netflix show in 4K? I've been thinking of getting a 4K TV and it might be worth it if all the new Netflix shows are 4K.

It's in 4k and it looks great! Most big budget Netflix shows are in 4k.

Yeah, this show isn't doing it for me after the first episode. Maybe it gets better, but it seems like boilerplate haunted house schtick. Given how little TV I get around to watching, this one is going on the back burner for now.

so how "scary" is it? Is it on the level of American Horror Story? What about violence or gore?

Trying to determine if my wife would like it.

Don't know if it's been posted yet, but, according to Flanagan, any Season 2 of Haunting of Hill House won't be about the Crain family again. He says they've been through enough.

Good.
Loved the Crains, but new story/new characters/anthology series is the best way to go, IMO.

My wife hates horror, but she really liked this. Is more 'drama' than horror. The characters (both adults and kids) do most of the heavy lifting and the horror is more spooky/atmospheric than violent and gory.

I'm 4 episodes in and I like the characters and story quite a bit(enough to look forward to the next episode), but there is nothing about this I would call "so scary I vomited" or any of the shit you see in articles about it

I look forward to the scares as much as the domestic arguments which are amazing.

One scary bit got me good, another later on but that's about it. Doesn't make the series bad or anything, the rest is really good and tense is just as good.

I don't think they need to go the anthology route. if anything, season 2 can focus more on the actual books story in which Dr Montague (Nell's Shrink in the show) tries to debunk Steven's book, rents hill house out and invites fellow patients who have had so called paranormal experiences.

Would probably end up being less Drama focused though which could be a negative.

So.. EP 9

Liv's descent into madness was basically a flapper girl telling her what to do? Bit disappointed really, the flashback teases from earlier episodes made it look a lot darker

Finished it up the other day and thought it was okay but incredibly overhyped. So many fucking overindulgent monologues! Especially towards the end. I think everyone except Kevin got one. Even Leigh got one and she was barely in it! Gahhhhhh couldn't stand it, it was so unnatural to how people really talk.

Theo, both as a child/adult was the only character that I really cared for. She was awesome.

I absolutely loved this...

Finally finished it yesterday and I can't stress enough how much I like it, to be honest I never expect how it ended, I totally expected a typical horror movie ending with a huge cliffhanger and I was very surprised how it tied it up all at the end.

I love how each character goes in detail about their own experiences in life and how much minuscule detail is said when they finally talk about their issues. It somehow makes me feels like reading a book but instead seeing them do it as they act, it was extremely well done.

Of course, the highlight of the show must be that episode 6, I'm still amazed at how they did that whole big scene in a big single shot, the camera work as well as the editing and the narrative is just so well capture in the whole atmosphere.

I'm not sure if the characters are fully based on the book (never read it), but they all feel like they are always hiding something huge but then later on they fully develop and we get to see more from them.

There are also through all the series all these tales and references that are hard to catch if you are not truly paying attention, like the tale of fear and guilt:

The man from the tale who built the wall to hide from "fear" and "guilt" is the man hugh found on the basement!

I can't complain much tbh, it's much more than I expected.

Finished it and found it decently entertaining but I doubt I'd bother with a second season.

A lot of the acting and writing felt weirdly amateur in spots. The actor who plays the father in flashbacks was particularly bad. What a stiff, awkward performance.

The season definitely had its moments though. I cant deny that.

I'm a huge horror fan and I thought this show was an amazing horror show. It wasn't goreporn or full of spooky monsters, but the content is horrific. It is classic Gothic Horror. Obviously it is based on a novel, but to draw references to other stuff, it reminded me of classics like The Castle of Otranto and Gormenghast.

Gothic Horror generally toes the drama line, so yes, it is a little more talky and less "scary", but I don't think that makes it any less of a Horror show (or book, if we're discussing the novel as well).

Oh god yes! Got really bad in the last couple episodes to the point where it felt like they were written by completely different writers. The whole Liv storm monologue was like "OK WE GET THE FUCKING POINT!"

Such a great build up but overall I felt like the payoff could have been executed a lot better.

One episode left and this definitely has lived up to the hype for me.

I'm so tired of the overdone cliches and tropes most horror series go for and while 'Haunting of Hill House' falls into some of those same traps, the well developed and believable characters, strong acting, pacing, writing and spot-on atmosphere creates a perfect package that works seamlessly.

Don't need overly dramatized caricatures and needless gore to be scared. The blend between family drama, the supernatural and horror elements just works well and stays faithful to the source material as much as it needs to while allowing for creative interpretation and flexibility.

As an aside, I absolutely love the scene transitions in this show.

Looking forward to the final episode and where this is taken as an anthology in future seasons.

This show is not scary at all at least not on the level of exorcist but it's a really good horror TV show. It feels like a Steven king show/movie/book for me. Unless it is based on a Steven king book. 8/10. Best TV horror made. Shits on AHS.
