it's so weird that a critically-acclaimed evergreen game belonging to an esteemed franchise that pays reverence to gaming's history and which holds broad enough appeal to sell 16 million units in a year is winning an online popularity contest

In my eyes Star Wars JFO is a poor man's God of War so it getting into the finals kinda confirms the narrative that 2019 is a weak year.

Voted for Smash, FE3H, and Astral Chain in the first round, and now Smash and FE3H in the second. Looks like a sizable amount of voters are with me on those selections. lol

But fire emblem 3 houses is giving it a good run 2 days in a row. Smash isn't a lock yet.
Possibly... I wouldn't write the Nintendo games off though. I think it'll be close between Smash, Fire Emblem, and Star Wars.
That Smash wasn't in the running last year was on a technicality, but I get the idea that Smash doesn't need this sort of recognition because Smash is a known quantity, so I do see where you're coming from on some level. I mean, GOTY discussion from bigger outlets like IGN has historically tended to favor big AAA offerings anyway, and that's definitely what I'd expect from fan voting, too. but I get being a bit disappointed by the notion that more recent releases that you or I might favor could go overshadowed by a game that technically 'doesn't belong'. Smash is the shit though so I can't be too disappointed

Maybe it's not included this year because it takes away from the seriousness of the event.
DMC V isn't making it to Day 3, but I admire the optimism.
Smash and Fire Emblem are starting to pull even further ahead of the rest. I'm thinking maybe some folk are changing their votes in light of their original choices likely not cutting the mustard.
Fans have a small voting influence in every category I think. But for this rewards it's only the fans.

Smash Ultimate deserves the win, and it looks like it very well may get it.
Not that The Game Awards mean a whole hell of a lot, and the "Players' Voice" even less so. Still, TGA usually manage to be quite entertaining for my wife and the GX crew. Looking forward to the madness!

Personally I'm rooting for Fire Emblem to take the Players' Voice award, since I think Smash has a very real chance of winning GOTY proper... the only other GOTY nomination I see potentially winning is RE2, and to be honest I think Smash has the edge.
Considering Death Stranding is one of the leading games in overall awards this year, this comment is humorous.
voted for fire emblem in the last round, simply because TGA needs to know Strategy games can also be GOTY, even if they are not as sexy as Fighting/Action adventure open world stuffs.

Yeah I noticed that too. The supposed final 4 are still in the lead though (Smash, FE3H, SWJFO and DS), and early on BOY howdy FE is off to a good start! Voted for it myself too. Gotta do it for MY BOI Claude!
