Nope.

Pretending that AC doesn't have a good chance, even if you think TLoU2 is the favorite, is just ignoring the reality of AC's acclaim, popularity and impact.
You don't think AC not being nominated for Best Game Direction, which is basically the 2nd most important award, could be a sign that its chances might not be that great.

It would be the first time the GOTY winner wasn't at least nominated for that category.

Not saying it couldn't happen, but I dunno how many media members will think "I won't nominate AC for game direction but I will vote for it to win GOTY".

TLOU2 without a doubt. Ghost of Tsushima second but only if you count in Legends. What an amazing year for Sony

Poor Pokemon Go, Fortnite and Minecraft not having all these "this game should be GOTY due to cultural impact" people coming to bat for them in their respective years.

I don't remember Minecraft or Fortnite starting out the gate as massively popular as ACNH did? Like, I still don't think we've truly grasped how significant Minecraft is, but no one did when it first launched.

I feel like Pokemon GO was already waning a bit when award season was starting up, but it felt like a bit of a fad (even though I still play it). Compare that to AC which has not only persisted but gave people a way to connect, socialise, and destress at literally the most important time "maybe" in the history of gaming. It's literally the perfect game at the perfect time.

Honestly think Animal Crossing deserves to win for being the exact kind of normalcy and routine needed to help so many people when lockdown was first happening.

I'd love for AC to win just to see people get upset that a game not for them won.
I feel like some people somewhere will be upset if almost any of these games win. TLOU2 has a ton of haters, ACNH is "too casual," FF7Remake's story had some people split, and I don't think many would say DOOM Eternal would make sense to win even if it's a top tier game.

Hades and Ghost are the only two without their fair share of hate.

I would love to see Doom Eternal winning it, but I know it's impossible. Game's too good to win GOTY.
So I'm hoping for Animal Crossing. Fuck TLoU2.

lol I bet the meltdown will be bigger with Part II winning than AC, since the later sold way more and is more beloved and for sure less hated, you don't see a campaign against or excuses if AC won, Part II has that way before launch.

I think it depends. Those who hate Part II will have a meltdown and that is a very vocal group, while ACNH will cause a meltdown in the same way if Ring Fit Adventure won GOTY.

I love Carrion, but it's an absolute crime that it's here but HUNTDOWN isn't... absolutely disgusting.

Overall, this year in games had a lot of hype titles that ultimately didn't satisfy me in the end. Basically this year was full of games that I enjoyed at first, but didn't finish.

Anyway...

...where's HUNTDOWN, Geoff!?

Answer: Nobody here

Debating these games and GOTY awards is a fun way to pass the time, and people get passionate and obstinate about their points-of-view, but nobody is going to wish death upon a reviewer for a stupid award.

FF7R is my GOTY from that list but I doubt TLOU2 won't win everything it's nominated for.

Great to see 13 Sentinels nominated for best narrative.

Odd to see Xenoblade not nominated for best RPG.

Sad at no Genshin Impact in best soundtrack. btw if FF7R, Hades or Doom Eternal lose this to TLOU2 I'll be pissed.

Pleasantly surprised to see Streets of Rage IV in best action game.

That's about it.

Xenoblade came out 10 years ago

A nice round set of games for GotY. I would disagree with one or two, but it isn't exactly my place to say what should and shouldn't qualify. Still, who knows how this will play out and hopefully won't be as big of a blowout as it could seem like it could be. Shame about Ori though.

Really why isn't Xenoblade at least nominated for RPG and music?

I keep going back and forth between FF7R and Hades for GOTY, I think FF just edges out by a tiny bit but it's super close for me. Like the more I think about Hades the more I realise what an accomplishment it is. It better win a ton of the other awards regardless of what happens with GOTY. Art Direction, Best Indie, and Action Game especially.

It's depressing for me to know that TLOU2 has this in the bag. From the viewpoint of just looking at it as a game it would be the worst choice of all of them.

Don't get me wrong, the game looks spectacular and had some great moments, but from all the nominees on the list it's the only one that had me actively bored and wanting me for it to end. I don't know that the fuck Neil's issue is with pacing a video game (considering U4 suffered greatly from the exact same problem), but it seems to work out for him and many others. Graphics and a better than average narrative are what can get you easy wins. The Last of Us 1 is one of my favorite games of all time, mind you, and that one didn't have nearly as much issues for me compared to the sequel.

If I had to choose an order it would be FF7 Remake >>>>> Ghost of Tsushima > DOOM Eternal > TLOU2 > Animal Crossing. They just work much better for me when it comes to gameplay compared to TLOU2. FF7R actually made me cry tears of joy for giving me the feeling of an adventure that I rarely get out of games nowadays. The last time before that was either God of War 2018 or BOTW.

Also, no Ori in GOTY is disappointing. That game was seriously kick-ass.

Voted straight TLoU2 and Hades where TLoU2 wasn't a nominee. I would have replaced DOOM with Paper Mario for GotY and added the latter to best music.

Disagree. The gameplay in The Last of Us Part II is incredible. It's one of if not the best third-person shooter on that front, imo. FFVIIR also has amazing combat, but it's not the total package.

It will probably be TLOUS2 but let's face it, Animal Crossing is the true winner of this year.

The point is that the game is trying to be a morality play about the senseless brutality of violence, and how Ellie's actions don't actually help her in the grieving process. The only way to actually experience the narrative is to play out all of that senseless violence, often through game mechanics that make her 'tragic descent into madness' feel like a badass action movie. It's a complete tonal break, in a game that is primarily profiting on tone.
The only time I felt it got action movie, was when the switch happened and we got all of those set pieces happened. I felt Ellie's side was her just spiraling more & more.
