I was looking through my PS2 collection and came across my copies of Forbidden Siren, 2 and Blood Curse.

God, I love these games. Absolutely love them.

I've always had big love for both Silent Hill and Resident Evil but Forbidden Siren is the only series that actually scared me a little.

In any case, have you played any of the three games? Watched the film? Read the comics or checked out the books? I'd be interested to know!

The PS3 game is amazing.

The best survival horror game from last gen.
I would have to agree. Not much stood out for me during the PS3 and Xbox 360 era of horror games. Once I got my hands on Blood Curse, I was hooked. The atmosphere from those games are too good. Everything feels so unfamiliar, dirty and just scary.

I want to play the second game but it requires some effort. Absolutely loved the PS3 re-visioning of the first game and 100% it.
It's honestly a shame that Forbidden Siren 2 didn't make its way to the PS4/2 Classics Line Up or whatever. Although I like FB1, FB2 plays a lot better and is overall the more enjoyable game.

Only played the first. It's super unique and interesting. Love the atmosphere and mind jack mechanic.
I've imported the second and third, gotta check em out one day.

I played the first one and liked it, but it kicked my ass.

I was also surprised to learn a few years later that the name of the protagonist is named after Suda51, he was apparently an inspiration for the writer of Siren through his game Moonlight Syndrome.

Yep, and loved them. Now that Gravity Rush is seemingly dead, I wonder if the team'll try another Siren?

Siren 2 being localized for Europe and never being released in North America (even as a PS2 classic) sucks.

The second game is probably my favourite horror game. These games can be well tough and frustrating at times but its worth it.

Yes, it was good and scary. But I kinda missed "the action" in the game. Too much hiding and running. Like way too much. More Silent Hill 1-ish (action-wise) would have been nice. But still a good game.

It's time for KeiichirĹŤ Toyama to call his team "Team New Horror IP" and make a brandnew SIE horror IP. Something like Silent Hill (he was the director and writer for Silent Hill 1) :)

Is the PS2 original or Blood Curse a better game? Have both but not sure where to start.

The original is the better game, but it all depends if you like hardcore stealth with obtuse point-n-click style puzzles or a more straight-forward approach with Blood Curse. BC is like a Siren-lite. But both are very good, and very underappreciated.

I've only played Blood Curse, which I really enjoyed. I'd like to play the first two eventually.

I loved the atmosphere in these games but ended up losing interest before the end. Good games but not Resident Evil or Fatal Frame tier for me.

Pretty much this. The first Forbidden Siren is stupidly difficult at times and for sure, you're going to get frustrated.

There are story differences between 1 and BC but both are difference experiences. I would suggest giving BC a chance and then moving onto the first game if you've got time.

I really loved the original Siren. The concept had me day one, but it was a game that I originally had to fight to enjoy. It wasn't until some years later with a really beefy FAQ that I was able to finish it. I recently replayed it and it's totally held up, still incredibly creepy and satisfying.

For anyone who missed out, I recommend SuperGreatFriend's longplay of Siren. He goes deeper into the lore and makes for an enjoyable run.

I did play through Forbidden Siren as well on PS3. I thought it was okay, but it lost a lot of what I loved from the original.

I would kill for a new Siren game.

A while back I had a dream that the first game got a modern remake, and Platinum Games were brought in just to make a certain bit of the ending playable. Some things are too good to be real.

I'm still waiting for another game in the series. Imagine a VR game that makes full use of sight jacking? Fucking crazy stuff.

The PS3 game is great. But at some point I was getting frustrated with the clanky controls, I couldn't finish the game unfortunately.

That sounds cool, any kind of new Forbidden Siren experience would be exciting.

Toyama has been talking about the Siren games out of the blue over the last couple of months. Probably just talk but would love to see this leading to something big. Sony could use a straight up survival horror game.

Sony Japan should do a collaboration with Koji Pro now that Death Stranding is almost finished, Toyama directing, Kojima producing with Del Toro and enemy design by Ito...

I STILL WANT SILENT HILLS!

Honestly if we could get another Silent Hill (that's actually good) or a new Forbidden Siren, then it'll be exciting times! Resident Evil going head to head with another big horror franchise would be dope.

I've played Forbidden Siren 1 through to completion and Siren: Blood Curse. This topic's timing is actually quite the timing for me, as I literally decided two days ago one of the games I was going to finally play through and complete during the summer was going to be Forbidden Siren 2.

The games are very unique, and the first game earns it's position as being one of the hardest horror games ever. But I think there's a specific type of logic to most of the game, three separate revelations you sorta' have where you begin to progress in the game much faster than before. The first is when you break out of the first "loop" and gain access to the time table/level select, which is pretty early in the experience as a whole but does really change things. The second time is when the player begins to sorta' understand how the game's internal logic works, missions and objectives that earlier were such struggles for you begin to become cakewalks and you begin to sorta' figure out the logic behind the primary objectives, like if the objective is to stop a certain Shibito, you begin to learn which Shibito have special behaviors to stick out to stop, or if there's a mission with a character you need to escort yo begin to learn where often the "safe spots" to leave AI partners are while you go off to do what you need to do, and how to hurry them past areas before the AI regenerates. Finally, there's a revelation where you begin to learn how to do the hidden "side objectives", how to figure out what levels have hidden objectives and the sorta' logic to how to break time loops and unlock new objectives/levels by changing outcomes in earlier levels.

I say there's a specific type of logic MOST of the time, but there are a few moments of complete bullshit in the original game. The thing that crops up into my mind almost immediately is the lantern quest, where there's four lanterns you need to light in four different levels in the game to progress. But there's four big issues with this quest:
01. The game does not telegraph well at all that lighting the lanterns has special purpose to progress in the game.
02. There's no clue to what levels have the lanterns you need.
03. There's often more than one lantern hidden away in the levels you do need to light them in, and only one that looks slightly different will even interact if you try to light it.
04. Frankly the problem proposed for this quest, lighting all the lanterns is a nonsense adventure game logic solution which breaks away from the game's internal logic most of the time.

I think that's just badly designed and telegraphed so it's not fair to the game's logic which is present most of the time. But most of the time there is a sorta' "flow" to how the game works, and as you play more and begin to understand the game's internal workings, you begin to progress much faster and perform much better in the game, even in new levels with twists and such to the formula.

I will say I think the design goes a bit against the horror aspect of the game though. Forbidden Siren has legitimately creepy enemies, settings, atmosphere, etc., so it's a bit of a shame that this is kinda' sacrificed by you having to then understand every bit of the game to progress successfully. I also think this is why Siren: Blood Curse in some ways manages to be scarier (in my opinion) than the original Siren, because though the game is easier and a bit westernized in some ways (though westernized in the sense it's still Japanese developers trying to westernize the game so there's a bit of discord that's enjoyable), because the game doesn't require as much mastery to progress while still being challenging (but not as challenging), you don't need to figure out everything about the game to progress which allows there to be potentially more tension going through as you are allowed to fumble more rather than rationalize and need to understand everything to progress.

I suspect Forbidden Siren 2 will end up being my favorite game in the franchise. I love the setting and enemies within it. I will see when I finally go through with it pretty soon, I've heard while the game is still challenging it is less so than the original Siren, and I also have heard it has quite a story. I think the setting and story of Siren 1 and Blood Curse are both big triumphs of the game's and made both very interesting to go through all the way, along with the Shibito themselves. I think these elements do remain strong even when you begin to figure out how the game ticks most of the time, so it does hold the experience in the later parts for those committed to seeing it through. And I think that aspect will hold a lot of appeal for me personally in the sequel as I kinda' love the setting of the sequel from what I've seen, and heard good things on the other aspects.

Also, as an aside, I'm really happy fans have gotten to calling the series Forbidden Siren. It was only called that in Europe, and Siren is cool too, but I think Forbidden Siren is just such a cool title for a horror game series.

Well you're in for a treat, Forbidden Siren 2 plays a lot better than the first game and has a lot more going on with it compared to the original.

Very underappreciated series in its time, though a stateside release of Forbidden Siren 2 may have helped it catch on with the combat improvements alone. Atmosphere and story-wise, I feel as though the PS2 games are better, but Blood Curse is such a fascinating response to the early 00s obsession American movie studios had with adapting Japanese horror rather than localizing the original films. Loved how they used the language barrier as part of the tension - Seigo's VA was surprised by how much English he needed to record for the role and the team felt like that helped build the character's sense of frustration.

I did a stream of the original for some friends earlier in the year. Many found it difficult to keep up with the non-linear order of the story, but were transfixed by it once the game showed its hand. In general, it seems like people just weren't sure what kind of game it was, what kinds of horrors to expect, so just getting it back out there for people would go a long way towards establishing it as the classic it should have been.

I haven't kept up with the manga, but I'm glad to see it's still going strong! Here's hoping Toyama's recent comments on it are hinting at another return for the Shibito, in whatever form that may take.

Siren 2 was amazing. It's pretty messed up that it was actually localized in Europe but never came out in NA.

Another series that deserves to make a come back. At least we got FS1 on PS4.

Yep. I've played Forbidden Siren and Siren: Blood Curse/New Translation. Both great games. I love survival-horror games with stealth/limited fighting, so I was very excited to check these out.

I played FS first several years ago. I love the atmosphere, music, and gameplay. Yeah, it's really obtuse and frustrating at times, but it's worth it for the experience.

Blood Curse/New Translation I played for the first time about a year ago. While still very good, I didn't enjoy it as much as the original. Not as scary.

I want to play Forbidden Siren 2 someday, but have to buy an expensive copy, get a PAL PS2, etc.....so I'll get to it eventually. I'm sure it will be good too.

A new Siren game would be great if Toyama wanted to continue the series, or even a new horror game would be nice. There's a severe lack of Japanese horror games lately, and I don't like Resident Evil :P

I 100% the first Forbidden Siren game and it was hard as hell. The level with the whole shibito family in the house was dope to navigate.

Siren 2 was much more beautiful, less janky, but I never finished it.

The PS2 era was great for this kind of Japanese smaller, more experimental productions.

Just imagine it, a new Forbidden Siren made with the tech we have now. It'll look and sound so damn good.

I'd loooove for them to revisit the original's performance capture with modern technology. Something about the realistic faces in the PS2 titles added a lot to the atmosphere, giving it a sort of live action drama flair. The direction they took Blood Curse lost some of that, even if the episodic format framed everything in the trappings of a TV show.

I think this track from the OST is the perfect summation of the sound design. Demented synths, chanted growls, voices strained by their transformation into bug-like organs swirling around in the distance...

Imagine all of the gruesome and disturbing details nestled deep in the rich soundscape, but with all the advancements of surround sound and live audio processing consoles are capable of today.

i played the first one and couldn't get into it to finish really. Skipped the 2nd for regional reasons.

But the ps3 siren was a quintessential B tier gem. The chapter where you play the small girl in the hospital was one of the more tense modern horror experiences i had.

I spent forever getting folks through the siren PS home event so i could get all the furniture, and they randomly removed it all and i rage-quit home afterwards.

I'd love to see them take another stab at it and refine it further. IMO it's only real problem is that there is a lot of downtime because of the menus and stuff between characters and i really hated that buying the whole thing on ps3 didn't let you remove those annoying TV style intros and outros.
