I will miss Drummer (is she really leaving ?)
Based on the books she should be staying around. That might end up being different - the TV show could go in a different direction or Cara Gee could leave the show for whatever reason, but barring unforeseen circumstances we should be seeing Drummer again.

First time I binge watched a season, normally I take a week or 2 but The Expanse is an exception and I was totally sucked by my screen from 10 am to 1 am. It was a great season and even if the plot on Ilus seemed thin, I liked the other plot lines and
I will miss Drummer (is she really leaving ?), Ashford and Miller
. 18 months after, it was worth the wait !
The aspect ratio changing personally bothered me, why not stay consistent with 16:9 ?

Some structure and adaptation choices "spoilers" follow relating to the future of a certain character. The show is very faithful to the books in that it is following the same plot to the same end game, but acts as a second draft to the books due to the writers involvement. They aren't hesitant to make changes to simply or clarify the story.
Drummer Is a composite of around 4 book characters: Drummer herself, 2 characters who are dead at this point and another who still has a role to play. It is very hard to predict even as a book-reader where her story will go, because the show might just introduce the original character or give her original role to a new character. I feel that she will have a part to play in the future, because if she was going to leave the show she would have gone out with Ashford.

My prediction for Drummer is that she doesn't take on Pa's role as a willing accomplice to Marco. I feel instead that she might have to do some introspection about what she believes in. She is sceptical of fanatics and politics, and is terrified of the Belt being sold out in all of this. However, she does have Pa's belief that everyone she puts her faith in abandons her. I saw some speculation on Reddit that she might take up robin-hood style piracy in season 5, or run a ship that escorts vulnerable belter ships through the rings, starting her own small faction. She might even be forced to cooperate with Marco after his rise to power. Her arc then might echo Pa's without the part about willingly helping Marco, because to do so would be a pretty big betrayal of Naomi.

The ship/space scenes continue to be highlights. So many times space feels tepid in movies even, but there is a real weight (😉) here.

Can't resist the binge. It's too good.

They are setting up future season(s) BEAUTIFULLY.

All that added drama between the crew (versus the quicker to bond novels) really pays off. This is a family. It feels earned.

Couple episodes in, really enjoying it much more than the book so far. The wife jumped in with me after midway in season 3 and she's liking it so far without having a ton of the backstory. I knew they could improve upon the book and I think the cinematography is helping give a better sense of scale than the books did. The structures look so much cooler than I pictured them.

I never got to comment on season three since I started it late but I watched the finale tonight and I really hate Peaches casting and the fake tears in the finale were awful.

Half way through and unfortunately I don't think I'm liking it as much as season 3. Can't pinpoint why yet, but probably because I prefer the previous side characters like Pax and Anna, mainly for their interactions with Amos.

First time in my life i binge a full season in 1 day, this is by far IMO the best season so far, hopefully this is another Jack Ryan situation and the next season comes soon, i don't want to wait close to 2 years for the 5th season.

Amos is fucking scary this season. Put some fear in a fucker after that punch.

That facial expression was top notch.
Easily my favorite character on this show. His clarity on all things is refreshing, as I am a man who regularly suffers from paralysis of analysis when presented with too many options. Amos? Well he just picks a direction and just goes for it at 100MPH. He's my goddamn hero.

I've always loved how loyal Amos is no matter what. Even in the face of peril his loyalty remains unhinged and the actor does a good job at that.

Finished, enjoyed it. Definitely a slower season. Did not care for Bobbie's stuff but it was good to see Mars in action. Let me just say that Avarasala's costume design was incredible, I wanted to dress like her because fuckkk she's glorious.
Her costume design made an impression on me too. Top shelf work from the person/department responsible for that. Unusually good.

Amos is the best. I'm glad this season kept him busy.

I actually didn't like her costume this season, it seemed far too fashion runway design than anything else, made her look like a character from a different show and not to mention it was considerably less Indian. I liked the design in previous seasons as they were all modified versions (taking the time period and her social class into account) of the traditional Sari or Salwar Kameez.

Jumping into this today, can't wait!

I can't wait for s5 now. Never read the books, but it looks like I should.

I just finished the 3rd book recently. The show generally sticks to the books for the first two seasons. Quite a few changes from the third book in the 3rd season. Definitely worth reading; I couldn't put them down.

The show and books are pretty much the same in terms of plot lines, the differences are in characters and side events. Some characters are merged into one, some are split into two. Drummer and Ashford are prime examples of this, obviously done to keep the cast manageable and filming more streamlined. Some side events like a ship full of side characters may get destroyed in the book but not in the show.

Ultimately it doesn't really affect the plot, and imo it's possible to switch back and forth between the show pretty seamlessly once you know which book character corresponds to which one in the TV. I personally picked up the book at Abaddon's Gate but stopped halfway through Cibola Burn due to how slow it was, I then decided to wait for season 4 and then jumped to Nemesis Games after watching season 4. It's been pretty effortless.

Drummer works better in a TV show as a single continuous character. Allows the time for growth and development.

Next season is my least favourite book :(

I hope there are some consequences for Amos "self-defensing" Murtry. Holden chucked Miller for similar actions. If there isn't it'll look like Holden plays the high-and-mighty lecturer then looks the other way as his pet killer offs his targets instead of risking a long and messy but entitled trial.

I think
that he just beat him up due to "self defence", I don't think he will kill him

I think this season was good as the book, which means it was the weakest of the first 4. I expect a little bit more of the show becuase it's been excellent in "spicing up" a lot of plots from the books, either by exploring things that are just menioned or giving different PoVs. They did both this season but it didn't work quite as well as previous ones. Bobbie and Avasarala's stories could have been more interesting, especially the former. The Belter pov was better but the ending was the highlight. And on the planet? It was ok, but nothing beyond that, again, like the book. With the exception however of the Roman tech. God I love seeing those ruins adn everything they could do and imagine how must it have been like to have so much control of the universe and physics.

One major (but also minor) disappointment:

I was looking foward to the visual translation of the show to what the doctor experienced when going through the artifact, seeing the space between things, light, atoms, etc... they might be kepting it for future seasons but I still wanted to see it.

Also, dropping all episodes at once sucks for internet discussion.

So uh... just finished it. Anybody know if a lot of people watched this like The Boys? I dont want this to end after Season 5 especially with the things this season setup.

I thought the show did a wonderful job with what it had to work with on SyFy. It punched above its resources and never looked cheap or silly, but mother of god at this budget increase.

Bezos will probably keep it running for himself, even if nobody else is watching it. I just hope the cast wants to stick around until the end. Nothing can stop the work!

Already finished the season. This show is a little brutal with it's end-of-episode cliffhangers lol. It's hard to stop.

Great show! I really want more of it somehow. I think maybe I should get into the book series.

Man, the ending, and those last few mins.

Goddamnit. Great season, some really nice changes and differences.

Avarasala's clothing, so damn good.

Binged it. Loved it. It really is the best sci-fi property of our time. I know a lot of people didn't really like the book this season was adapted from, but I really appreciate the feel of being on an alien, unpredictable planet.

The wait for the next season will be long, though. Maybe time to do a reread of the books to pass the time.

I miss the old (old) Arjun

This I can absolutely agree with. I absolutely preferred the old actor. The new guy didn't have the same softness to him, which is what made him such a good tether to the less ruthless aspects of Avasaralas personality.

entire season spoiler :

they never got into details about the moons and the planet itself :

the 12 (?) perfectly sync moons, how the lightning matched a pattern of the moon ? Didn't understood this or the implication.

I just thought it was all meant to be understood as the planet was so heavily terraformed by the protomolecule, even the moon were part of the articifial rig[ but does the book goes more into details about all this ?

Even the lightning stoping over an island and triggering some kind of super volcono explosion, it happened but I didn't found a reason/ explanation for it/SPOILER]

I don't like the new Arjun either.
First of all he doesn't look very Indian (yea I know the original actor was half Indian and Shohreh is Persian), secondly his overly american accent kind of bothers me because the original actor did not have that accent in the show. He also looks a lot younger in comparison to the older Arjun and Shohreh (who are both about the same age, whereas the new guy is like 20 years younger). Another thing is yea he doesn't have the softness of the original Arjun, and for an older married couple like this you need to balance Chrisjen's dominant and tough personality with a soft and empathetic Arjun which the new guy lacks.

He is also called Arjun Rao now and not Arjun Avasarala.

Binged it all in one session, I couldn't keep my eyes away it's just to good. I'm a sci fi geek and I can easily say this show is probably my top sci fi show, and that is saying something. The universe is definitely the top 3. Please just keep making this show and dont ever stop!

Just a small clarification from what's known in the show:

Naomi refers to it as a reactor explosion.

With that in mind the book goes into more detail about that stuff. I wonder if the next season will fill in some of the details but it's kind of left to the viewer to make assumptions in this season. Book knowledge definitely fills in some gaps.

For book readers, is it just me or does it look like
they're starting season 5 at least a third of the way into book five, if not more?

Season 4 was preeettty good, especially since I found the book a bit boring lol. Liked that they were forshadowing and introducing future book stuff.

Wasn't a fan of new Arjun though. He just doesn't match with Avasarala.

I didn't like the book at all but this season was fire, couldn't put it down and finished it in basically a day.
I dropped the books after book 5, although I loved that one, but because of book 4 I just wasn't interested in the greater narrative anymore. this season might make me pick up the books again. are they any good? I read some spoilers and it sounds like the good kind of crazy.

Is the reason why you dropped the book because
the story becomes about Laconia taking over rather than being about the mysteries of the ringbuilders?
