Brb making an Epic account asap! I once liked PSN because it was a nicely curated store, and then everything started to change with the PS4.

I mean, look how much thought they put into this:
Figures. If Epic can make it work and keep the asset flips and hentai trash off while also letting no one else slip through the cracks, then that'd be a meaningful contribution to the PC ecosystem that's Steam hasn't yet accomplished.

I'm not optimistic. Methinks you need to take the bad with the good in this instance.

Didn't Steam try this, only to have indies (rightly) complaining that their game was blocked from Steam because of some person's judgement?

there was some quote around the time steam opened up that they woudln't have greenlit stardew valley because who wants to play some dumbass farming game? (not the direct quote but the basic message of the quote)

curious how this will go for Epic. I expect bad results

Why would you even say something like this? How could this ever be interpreted in a way that won't come back and bite you at any point?

So what's crappy then? Indie games with no big name?
Probably. Which means the thing that a lot of people thought would happen, Epic rejecting a lot of the developers that are so up in arms over Steam, is now much more likely.

People really do only read the titles.

This is what Sweeney means by "crappy":
"We'll have a quality standard that doesn't accept crappy games," he said. "We'll accept reasonably good quality games, of any scale, whether small indie games to huge triple-A games, and we'll take everything up to, like, an R-rated movie or an M-rated game. A GTA game would be fine to us, but Epic's not going to distribute porn games or bloatware or asset flips, or any sort of thing that's meant to shock players. The PC's an open platform and if we don't distribute it in our store you can still reach consumers directly."

I think his bigger point is that EGS won't be filled with hundreds of thousands of gutter games that people manage to get onto the steam store. Not that games with less-than-steller reviews can't make their way onto the store.

Thankfully, as long as EGS doesn't have any monetary benefit for consumers to buy these shitty games (i.e. trading cards, easy achievements, emotes) they'll have much less to concern themselves with than Valve.

Of course people are being intentionally obtuse in this thread. Of course.

A GTA game would be fine to us, but Epic's not going to distribute porn games or bloatware or asset flips, or any sort of thing that's meant to shock players.

This is what Sweeney means by "crappy":
This could be interpreted to mean that they either define "crappy" games to be games in those categories or that they won't let in crappy games in addition to games in those categories. The latter seems more intuitive to me since it's obvious that a porn game can also be high quality.

The "crappy games" statement is completely separate from that one. If you actually read it, you'd say they will also only accept what they decide to be "good quality games".
RCT Adventures is not a freaking "good quality game".

This is exactly what I mean when it comes to being purposefully obtuse. RCT Adventures is not necessarily a quality game. But it sure isn't a porn game or asset flip. Read the entire article and you should be able to come top that conclusion.

If you want to know what he means by crappy you can just literally just read his statement. They say they won't accept any game that isn't of "good quality".
RCT Adventures is, in fact, not of "good quality". That made it to the store just fine.

No. Read it again. They said they'll only accept "good quality" games. It's a lie.

"Please hate me more," requests Epic Games' Tim Sweeney, resolving to ensure that every utterance out of his mouth is wrong, disconcerting, and anger-inducing.

From this list, 'Agartha' is a quite interesting Japanese doujin game, toying with the roots of the sandbox genre in classic Japanese computer games from the 80s.

Sadly, not the promised 'Agartha' developed by Frederick Raynal for the Dreamcast.

I'm guessing things like this:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/921430/Genius_NAZIGIRL_GoePPelsChan_ep1/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1037420/Hentai_Strawberry/

The lack of curation is one of the biggest complaints about Steam. He's saying they'll not let the same happen to EGS.
Ok so when I see a dev say something like "This game is a game that I have been working on for about a year now and i want to distribute it and I couldn't think of anyplace better than Steam", my reaction is more along the lines of "it's cool that Steam has given this person the opportunity to sell their game and maybe some people will like it" not "this trash needs to never be given the privilege of showing up in search results alongside PUBG and DMCV".

If you want to know what he means by crappy browse the steam store new releases

Popular New releases is the default browsing for new releases. Actually searching new releases manually in chronological order is the same as any massive uncurated store, be it itunes, amazon etc. Yes you will find trash - but how much trash do you see when you are actually browsing the store or trying to find your games normally? Chances are not much at all for a store of this scale. And furthermore, you wouldn''t solely use any given storefront for that purpose

As amply demonstrated in countless threads now, and my own experience, the only way for me to find trash directly on Steam is to:
- Manually search for a game highlighted on via Jim Sterling / social media
- Manually search specifically new releases in chronological order, or try to find a free to play game in new and trending
- Scroll for an extremely long time on a particular category or chart
- Specifically choose a curator that does the same

To this day I am 99% not seeing anything considered trash outside of popular games I think are trash and are rated poorly (eg Atlas when it released). Steam gives you all the tools to lock out games you don't like by tag (eg I will never by dating sims - great, simply add it the ignore list and you never see any of those games)
The amount of tools to customise steam is awesome, far beyond any other gaming platform.
