Antony Starr did a great job but I couldn't help constantly thinking that Chris Pine would have been the ideal actor for that role.

Which is funny in hindsight because I now realize that it would have made 3 Star Trek reboot actors in the show if they had done that

Finally started watching it. It's shockingly good and surprisingly well translated from the original material. This is what a good adaptation looks like.

Also...

The Girl is completely different! And she's quite cute here.

This is mildly disturbing, tbh

Edit:

This motherfucker has the perfect "something just isn't computing right behind there" eyes. I almost feel bad saying that because I worry that it could just be what the actor looks like!
Watch Banshee for a masterclass at playing "something is deeply wrong with this asshole". And he's the good guy there.

I don't remember Starr standing out nearly as much in Banshee as he did in this, but then again, it's been a few years since I watched it. And I think I only watched the first season. Maybe it's time for a rewatch.

But yeah, he pulls off the lifeless stare completely devoid of empathy or remorse incredibly well. Like legit one of the best I've ever seen.

I was reading spoilers about the comics and oh boy if they go down that route with Black Noir. But considering the ending of the first season is totally different I wonder if they've just taken the premise and characters and do their own thing.

I was most disturbed by what I was convinced was a wig on starr... but it turns out, that's his hair?

Banshee had a lot of surprisingly strong characters. Even if he was playing the protagonist, he didn't get to own the screen like he does in The Boys. And his role was more or less "broken man trying to get his shit together", which leads to a more nuanced act than "disturbed superpowered psycho ready to mess your shit at the drop of a penny".

I was most disturbed by what I was convinced was a wig on starr... but it turns out, that's his hair?
That hair is fucking me up, too. I thought I was tripping for a second.

Are we doing open spoilers for season 1?

Anyways I really hope they drop the fugitives on the run storyline in the beginning of season 2. That would be so boring to have a season of that.

Yeah it's amazing how much better Starr's hair looks in real life when it's the exact same thing

I swear to god I think it's the chest, it just has a reality-fakening field around it. I'm

Potentially weird question: I'm one episode and half in and does anybody else find Queen Maeve's costume and character low key sexual?

Like, the costume is well made, but has that odd "big budget porn parody" quality to it, and the actress plays her character in a way that, I don't know, rubs me in a certain way.

Maybe I'm just a filthy debased animal.

It may be that.

No. I think the sexualised design is intentional. I think next episode kind of addresses it.
Not Maeve directly but that Starlight has to go through the embarrassing justification of more sexualised designs which I think also applies to Maeve being the only other female superhero. Design is to sell to the audiences kind of a reflection of what happens in a lot of media
Gave me PRoZD anime vibes.

Why does Homelanders muscle suit look so fake?
Because proper muscle suits are expensive as heck and Starr is wiry and lithe, not bulky and powerful. Also, this show seems to have a fairly limited budget.

Even Superman's looked a bit off at times, and Cavill is huge.
Really makes you appreciate the Shazam suit. I never even saw the actual movie, but the entire time I was watching this I was thinking how well they captured the balloon-muscled superhero look in that. Would've been so perfect for an exaggerated perversion like Homelander.

Either on the next episode or the one after.
It is suggested that the company may give sexy outfits to all the prominent female heroes, since we at least see them force one on Starlight .

You don't seem to realize the insane amount of money that went into it.
The production value isn't cheap...
It looks ok, but so far I can notice a lot of "TV tricks" in the way of sets and camera angles. This is something shared with Amazon's The Man in the High Castle, which most of the times looks a lot more expensive than it actually is. TV and streaming productions have become very, very good at this.

I'll probably post some screenshots when I finish it to illustrate my point.

Perhaps it's even intentional? Like, he doesn't need to be buff to have these superpowers. And exaggerating like that would suit his personality.

Saw speculation on reddit that in the TV show Black Noir might be
Kimiko's brother and it seems likely to be the case given conservation of characters in the show- this isn't really a wide-ranging expansive series.

I mean the fact that he was seen drinking tea japanese style, it's pretty telling.

Really curious where they are going with the story. Alot of the major plot point pretty much diverged from the comic.

Yeah. I think we can assume that the tv show is going in an entirely different direction; rightfully so. Like how much richer is Butcher vs Homelander's storyline than the comic.

Also, because of the different characterization of the chars some of those plotpoints won't be as effective. Like Homelander here is clearly smarter than comic Homelander so many of the ways they worked around him/tricked him in the comic won't work here. Hell he's the smartest character in the show which makes him even more terrifying.

I started the comic, and, boy (no pun intended), it's totally different. Like, besides the name and some key plotpoints, the series might as well be a totally different thing.

Now, I totally dig the series a lot more. The Boys are totally underpowered and overwhelmed by this fash corp and supes that is not even funny, and that's what makes it so good.

Also, lol at comic Hughie being a Simon Pegg look-a-like. That Simon Pegg is Hughie's father in the series is a nice nod, if it was intended.
It was intended.

I thought the show looked great, but if you have time I'm definitely interested in the TV tricks you mentioned.

He's not as flamboyant as on this show (obviously) but I thought he could capture attention whenever it was needed and then fade back a bit in group scenes.

I wasn't expecting to like this so much, the trailer didn't really do it for me, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. One of the best things I've watched in a while.

Just finished all 8 episodes. That was damn good. Definitely best thing Amazon has put out. Kinda bummed it didn't feature a ton of superhero stuff and powers in it. Seemed more like people in costume most of the time.

Will echo the sentiment that this is the best thing on Prime right now (and might be the best comic book show right now). Really hit all the right notes and a lot of the satire is so on point for a show funded by a literal Vought Corporation.

Also Urban better win an Emmy.

Light comic spoilers

Tbh, they're going to have to work really hard next season to explain why Homelander doesn't just kill them all. He is stronger in the show than in the comics, and The Boys are comically underpowered compared to the comics. They also had extreme blackmail material on Homelander - and actual funding from the CIA. They have NOTHING going for them in the show. And many additional things going against.

Finished the show. Who else thought (episode 8 spoiler):
The baby in the climax wasn't going to be Madelyn's baby, but was swapped for the super babies? And that was gonna be Butcher's "real" plan to take down Homelander. I was disappointed that this wasn't the case.

Also, I do find it kinda funny that Hughie's girlfriend died in :
what was essentially an "impaired driving" incident.

I didn't think it at the time, but looking back I can definitely see why you would.

Maybe I'm missing something and it's really a minor thing but a pet peeve from the show for me is a bit of contradiction at the beginning when butcher
says homelander is the only good one of the supes but he pretty much raped and killed his wife and he seems to be one of the worst lol
im guessing he was being sarcastic? But it seemed like a serious convo
